New guy here, I've been playing around with a the Trial ebon jaguar and it's really fun. It's got 2 medium pulse lasers, one heavy laser and a Gauss cannon. How good are Gauss cannons in the grand scheme of things? It's felt really satisfying so far to blow people's arms off, or drop a shot on a light's cockpit and watch it drop immediately.

Goose is great even though it used to be stronger.

Lots of players don't like it or have issues with the charging mechanic even though it only takes an hour or so to get used to it.

It complements hot energy weapons perfectly since goose makes no heat.

Gauss rifles go well with large lasers, though. They're high heat, and gauss are low heat consumption. Though the best combination would be large pulse, medium lasers, and goose.

Not too many mechs can run double goose but it is incredibly effective since both shots will usually hit the same part of the enemy.

If enemies have a weak spot such as an open side torso you have the ability to surgically hit it.

30-35 pinpoint damage is also enough to wreck lights in a single shot assuming they took some damage or you hit them in their rear.

It's also enough to headshot most mechs assuming they don't have full head armor and even then you might get lucky enough to get a crit chance (close to a coinflip in odds).

Lastly, you can ignore the downsides of hot maps and have no problems with standoff fights either.

Yes, it's ballistic.

There's two things to consider with gauss. One is that the weapon itself explodes for 20 points of damage if someone hits it when your armor is stripped in that location.

The other is that if your gauss are widely set apart like on a King crab claws, or in a Dire Wolf arms they might not necessarily hit the same body part on a small target if it's moving and you're tracking it.

So here's the deal with Ferro and Endo:

Endo is always better, always. They both take up the same amount of crits, but Endo has better weight savings, always. The reason for this is Ferro is one of those cost-effective compromises in the original tabletop. Some robots use both endo and ferro, but the heavier you get the less that's going to be true, unless you're a Clan mech which use Endo and Ferro that take up half the slots of the IS mechs.

Double Heat Sinks are also a straight upgrade over Single Heat Sinks. This little fact is the funtax of the game. Every robot you ever use will need DHS, and unless it already comes with them, that's 1.5 million extra cost to kitting out the mech. It's shitty but that's just how it is.

Your engine is much too small. Engines have an internal amount of heatsinks built into them - you may have noticed if you try to remove all the heatsinks you have mounted in that thing it will tell you that you need 10 minimum. That's because all engines below a 250 rating are missing internal heatsinks, and they lose another every 25 rating. I should note that these heat sinks are unique as well when they're DHS - most DHS aren't true double heatsinks in the sense they don't give you 2 capacity and 2 dissipation for every one you have, they actually tend to have values around 1.2 to 1.6 for those (depending on tech base, Clan and IS are different). Built in engine doubles DO give 2 for each though, making them the most powerful heat sinks you can have.

Also, for every engine 25 points above 250 rating you get an extra slot to place a heatsink in the engine without it taking up critslots. These don't give the benefits I mentioned above, they're normal DHS or SHS or whatever and not engine sinks, but they don't take up any crits. In short you want a 280 or 295 as someone else said.

Also your back armour is too high, cut it in half. You won't need more than 8/10/8 for back values.

You can fit that in the penisgawker easy. Just an XL255, a single jumpjet and all three upgrades - Ferro, endo and doubles.

It's a bit toasty (can only fire three alpha strikes in a row before having to cool off) but it pumps out 99 damage for your troubles.

Consider this; The panther does PPCs better than the phoenix hawk.

An ERPPC, completely unquirked, will overheat you after 5 shots. That's between the two of them, and with 15 double heatsinks. 50 damage, if you hit all of them in the same component, before you shut yourself down.

Heavy lasers are a post-MWO-Clantech weapon. Packs better than pulse laser damage into an ER laser-weighted but bulkier package, but are inherently less accurate about delivering it than Clan ER lasers as well (and have IS-standard ranges). They're first-generation weapons- the improved versions are more accurate but also suffer from gauss-like explosions if critted. Timeline wise, they won't show up until MWO timeskips up to 3059 or so (it's "3053" right now).

To give you an idea, TT stats for a heavy large laser are 18 heat/16 damage/4 tons/3 crits and IS large laser reach. They'd probably have tremendously long burn time in MWO.

What I've been saying that PGI should do for heavy lasers is utilize the same mechanic that the pulse lasers had in MW3. And to an extent flamers have now.

That they don't have a specific burn time, and will cease as soon as you let off the trigger, but they'll need a cooling down period before you can fire for the full duration. Going over the duration limit on a heavy laser should start to drastically increase in heat buildup, as the weapon draws increasing amounts of power to continue operating and heats up the mech. The developers could add a drawback mechanic to stop people from abusing lights to simply poke 1-3 damage every half a second by adding a short burn intensification period, where the heavy laser needs like 0.3 seconds to reach maximum damage tick capability or deals reduced overall damage.

This way clans would get their short range, short burn duration laser weapons that would allow them to utilize their greater mobility over IS for peeking and poking, but firing only for a part of the duration over and over would reduce your overall damage dealt even if it upkeeps damage per second.

Going by MWO rules, the Heavy LL would probably do an extra +1 or +2 damage just like all the other large lasers in the game. If they don't have a longer burn time than the rest (or better yet exactly the same as IS lasers), then they might be useful.

I guess since CERPPCs are gimped by being spread damage weapons the HLL might be worthwhile to take even on larger mechs. HLLs are of dubious usefulness on anything but the most weight-starved mechs on the tabletop when the CERPPC is only slightly heavier and actually smaller.

I don't have any of them myself, but I've seen people do stuff like downsizing the ACs to uac10s or boating medium lasers in the shoulders of the laser variant. You'll notice the stock dual uac20 build has way less than max armor, I'm pretty sure it doesn't have room for the biggest guns unless you want to fall over in a stiff breeze.

Functionally IIC and IIC-C may as well be identical, since the good builds for both are all 2B in the side torso and 2E in the CT. You can't really afford to armour the arms on a Hunchback IIC.

If you're buying them with C-bills then IIC-C does come with UAC10s stock if you need them, sure. Just strip the arms and jump jets, add ferro, and put an engine worth a shit in it.

Do this instead, fug the ams and lrms. You can alternatively replace one of the LPLs with an ERPPC if you just want to mash alpha strike without having to worry about ghost heat. Some people like to wait before double tapping ultras so they don't cause ghost heat and it'll get a longer duration of cockpit shake, but I just slam the button as fast as possible when I have a shot, unless I'm close to overheating already or really have to disrupt the target's aiming.
