But I'm not seeing it. Beck's buster is wimpy compared to Mega Man's. It takes SEVERAL shots to kill enemies without assimilating them. Also Mega Man isn't made of XELs so Beck couldn't assimilate Mega Man.

Mega Man's special weapons are also a lot more practical than Beck's. Mega Man outclasses him in both firepower and versatility.

From the Kickstarter page, it looks like Naoya Tomita/Tom-Pon is responsible for overseeing the stages. The level designer of several Mega Man and Mega Man 2 stages. Cut Man, Guts Man, Fire Man, and one Wily Stage in MM1, and "parts" of MM2 stages.

"Designing and balancing the different stages in Mighty No. 9" is what he was on board for.

I think for me, it's just such a joke that Inafune spent so much time counting his eggs before they hatched, trying to make this huge franchise out of Mighty No. 9 before the game was even done.

The cartoon, the movie tie in, the sequel, even considering amiibo for the Wii U version - I mean, come on, Inafune: Wait until you have something to present, and make sure it's a good and polished product before you start trying to make it into something bigger.

But instead we get the Mighty No. 9 that people are playing through today, and it's unpolished as all hell. Visually it's a mess, there are questionable level design choices, the ending is inconclusive and cliffhanger-y, characters look awkward in cutscenes, etc.
Couple that with the sloppy distribution of codes to backers, the entire project has just been handled with so little care that Inafune really does seem full of himself when he says he plans to make a sequel.

And can anyone confirm that most text in Ray's DLC was text for the normal gameplay with all instances of "his" replaced with "her?"
Including places where "his" appears in other words, like the word "this"?

There's a difference between things not turning out and being lied to and played. Not only did the initial idea look much better than what we got 3 years later, but so much other shit went down between the management of both the community and the actual game, between the whole Dina bullshit where patrons lost their rewards for having opinions to the Red Ash KS that failed to be funded through KS yet still got funded by someone else anyway to the several delays, that could've maybe been lessened if Inafune bothered to practice what he learned at Capcom

Maybe initially, but by this point, after the what 6 delays now? The multiple PR disasters, the poor graphics especially compared to a test that took 7 days to make 3 years ago as well as multiple other crowd funded projects with smaller funds, the several other projects and kickstarters created by Comcept while MN9 was still being developed, the buggy leaked build that barely got better over the year of fixing, the lack of any info on the 3DS and Vita versions of the game, the bugs it was released with being fairly prevalent to a number of users, the non working dlc codes etc. I really do not believe that the negative reaction is because the nostalgia isn't present. That at this point is only a shame, because some nostalgia might've been able to turn some more people to liking this shitshow.

What a shit show. Finished the couple of the levels and uninstalled right away.

And I even went in to try to give the game a fair chance, despite everyone bashing it.
The gameplay wasn't completely terrible, but for this type of game it needs to be waaay above decent for me to get any enjoyment from it. If this was a random indie game that Steam shits out everyday, I most likely wouldn't have even bothered to check any further than the shitty looking screenshots.

I hope someone from the dev team squeaks and tell what the fuck happened. I doubt it was a straight up scam, bet they didn't know how to manage their team/time.

Since I drew up Snow Woman, I've actually been musing the idea of a Robot Mistress with a Air man/Volcano Man type body, just to see what it'd be like.
I would also go with ice-themed but Fuel Man's level is a snowy town, so that concept would overlap... unless this Ice-bot worked at a beach resort, or something? That could work.

But otherwise it was probably going to be an experimental underwater settllng, half town and half marine research centre. That way it could be a fairly atmospheric/moody water-level setting.
A beach would be too small and narrow for an rpg-dungeon, and a resort overlaps a bit with Dullahan Woman's amusement park level.

Well, Quick Man's stage was mostly vertical-down.

Elec Man's stage is vertical-up. Quick Man, who's based off Elec Man, has a vertical-down stage.
Crash Man, who's based off Guts Man and Bomb Man, has a stage that uses moving platforms (Guts) and the stage is mostly light blue and yellow (Bomb).
Metal Man and Cut Man both have tedious stage enemies that take an annoying amount of shots to kill (Moles and Octopus Batteries) and they're generally considered easy starting points.

so I tried MN9. From what I can see, they managed the stages well enough for speedrunners, but not very well for everyone else.

For newbies, you can theoretically take things slowly, but several gimmicks like oil on fire trigger trigger outside of your vision. Others like the constant gotcha! traps can be observed well beforehand, but require far more skill and understanding of the game than can be expected of them.

For medium tier, you have to force yourself to take things slowly, otherwise you risk triggering the difficulty spikes built-in for speedrunners.

This thing runs like dogshit. Input lag is pretty crippling, and all the instakill traps make it frustrating to deal with. I'd hate to see what specs are required to get this running without frameskips.

Like I've said before, 3D models do the game no favors when it comes to precision. It's harder to tell the relative heights of your jumps and attacks. Even without input lag, there is a certain sense of control that is missing compared to 2D, and they haven't figured how to bridge that gap.

Not a fan of score attack and powerups, but you can't call that a "flaw".

Story seems okay so far. The voice acting is mostly fine, it's really just the camera framing that managed to be inferior to X8. As for the script itself.....it's trying to be more modern, and succeeding. To a point. A work in progress, but an expected one.

All in all? When I first backed this, I was half-expecting this level of quality. I knew that Inafune was doing the worst of marketing ploys, and the game itself is slightly worse than initial expectation, but not the absolute trash that people hype it up to be.

The game is full of 'surprise, instant death spikes' moments, things that you can't prepare for before seeing them.
This feels really cheap, and it's nearly constant in several stages.
Number... 6? The bulldozer, Seismic's stage I feel is a good example of this.
The first part of the stage sets up what? A new enemy, 'there will be drops with hang ledges in this level,' and crates and another new enemy if you explore*.
The rest of the stage has no setup that tells you that all of the following 'shafts' like that will be cruel variations of that.
The second half is full of moving killtraps. The first of which even comes as a surprise.

That level is also the ONLY place the Crash Bomb weapon's special destructible blocks appear.

It's the same through all the levels. Challenges are given no time to develop, only pulled out once and then forgotten.
No. 2's level has ice and precision platforming sections. Section. It is lethal, the floor is spikes. You are given no 'practice' area beforehand. And the section with the (ONE OFF (except for one single reappearance later)) ice spout enemies right before it doesn't count, since there's no precision there.
Look at any of the Mega Man games. The disappearing blocks in Heat Man's stage have build up, and they're revisited in the fortress levels. I think I played 9 most recently, so that's in my head: Concrete Man's minibosses, the gravity sections, the hologram blocks in Plug Man's stage, Astr- I mean UFO Man's warps, Jewel Man's pendulums, and their *combination* in the fortress stage.

The Nightly Show is on and I'm in full rant mode, so I have to stop or I'm going to go off on that too.


*everyone always explores the first time, and even times after that. This is a design maxim for all intents and purpose; never worry about players not seeing secrets or branching paths, they will always come back and see the rest.

The fallout that would happen if Yooka Laylee isn't perfect will most likely kill KickStarter as a means to make video games.

Mighty No. 9 had the disadvantage of GamerGate happening and people already starting the hate train 3 months after the KickStarter ended, but Yooka-Laylee is automatically assumed to be 10/10 right out of the gate.

I'd say the same thing for Half-Genie Hero, but it seems that, so long as there's a big heaping helping of THICK in the game, it could literally be boss rush and people would pay $60 for it.

The hate for MN9 started early on and snowballed as Comcept kept revealing dumb crap like the cartoon, movie, Red Ash's 2 kickstarters, the delays, etc. That, combined with the game's general blandness and mediocrity, pretty much set itself up for failure.

The backers for Yooka, Bloodstained, and HGH are content with their updates and footage, so I doubt any of these will crash and burn as bad as MN9 did (especially HGH, which doesn't have the daunting task of being a spiritual successor to a beloved, dead franchise).

I'd say that Inafune wanted Comcept to be like Level 5. Level 5 has the whole "We make Franchises, Not just Games" down to a science. They've been making games since 2000. proved that they can make their own concepts by creating the Professor Layton series, and then slowly built up the Inazuma Eleven franchise before coming out with Little Battlers eXperiance and Yokai Watch; both of which released simultaneously with toys and an anime. Hell, they even have a new series in the works called Snack World that they did a demo reel of two years ago that they've kept under wraps since then. The president is even going have their American branch working on figuring out how to make Yokai Watch big in the states, even if that means making American-only games.

Inafune, unfortunately, wanted to do make a franchise two years after Comcept was founded, without any of the hard research, established media ties, and proof that his company could handle that kind of stress.

The game crashes when I switch between full screen and window mode, I'm not sure if that has to do with the fact I don't have my laptop at its default resolution, but that's only because things become to small when I do.

This is also a pretty god damn good laptop, so this game shouldn't be doing that.

I just tick the extra lives way forward, but the "helpful" buffs don't last long enough to be useful anyway. And there are OHK moves so the defense boost has questionable use.

His scarf doesn't look cloth-like at all. It looks hard, like it's made of metal or plastic. Plus, the angular scarf fits the rest of his design.

That being said, Classic Shadow Man only ever had the red scarf in the ending for Battle and Chase. You'd think they'd prioritise that scarf design for the character who has it as part of his iconic look.

I wish we got more good and accessible figures for characters besides the mains. There are really neat kits for the robot masters which never got released outside of Japan and turn up once in a blue moon online for insane prices.

Gunvolt stream this morning was nice. They showed of a new 3DS theme and played the first stage for GV all the way. Saw a little opening dialogue scene with some Sumeragi members. Teseo mentioned a new name, Tendaan? Also realized the BGM was a remix of the first stage from GV1.

They mentioned who was on the Striker Pack LE Drama CD. Asimov, Monica, Zeno, Nova, Merak, Jota, Zonda, and 3 new characters I believe? Then they played a sample. Sounded like Asimove and Zeno were tapping into a conversation Merak was having with Nova.

Near the end they played Indigo Destiny and then a new RoRo song. At least I think it was new. Don't remember hearing it before. After that they just made a couple announcements. 6/26 is like Eletcric Day? They mentioned something about the staff. I think that's all I got from it.

meh. Doctor White looks okay, but the others aren't so good. Beck's arms and legs don't bend according to the joints that they supposedly look like, and should be uniform in thickness anyway. Call's standing position(which you see a lot because of cutscenes) is pretty bad at making the "emotionless robot" thing look good. Sanda is a ball.

I think there have been minor complaints about the character design, and the music has been getting pretty indifferent reviews, at least here. The story is apparently ok but the end is very rushed and lackluster and sets up for a sequel which is probably a little preemptive. Also parts of the story line not making much sense is a common complaint, mainly the Blackwell part.
