Why the fuck would Square hide plot-important scenes like this? You literally have to go ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF BEVELLE, a second time, for pretty much no good reason. There's no indication that there's anything down there either.

But no, in order to understand half of what the fuck is even going on in this game, you need to go to the bottom of Bevelle and see this one scene. I can imagine why people hated the plot of X-2 because half of it is fucking HIDDEN from anyone who didn't use a guide.

First I tried to used their very low evasion to land safe fire veils and then damage magic since the strongest one doesn't counter those. It sort of worked, probably would but I fucked up in the end and their elementalist wrecked me.
Then I took an archer, used study prey and hasted her while the bangaa cast grace and the paladin used defense.
Apparently all those bonus stack, even if defense goes away by the next turn it pretty much meant invulnerability and then the lingering protect and grace were enough to keep her alive through the counters.

It's probably safer to just debuff them from afar though, since the other guys can fuck you up if they get close..

He's still a samurai able to use both knight and spellblade abilities and who has a soul break that does damage while giving Major Regen. He's a damn good melee fighter, although one that could be replaced depending on the soul breaks you get. He's still got a huge selection of very handy abilities that usually have to be spread along multiple characters, though - Look at the FF6 characters, to get the spread of abilities you get on Gilgamesh you'd have to take Cyan and Edgar.

Gilgamesh is a very very good jack of all trades, and he's incredibly useful in the "early game". Once people start amassing honed 5* abilities and more powerful SBs though his utility becomes a lot less useful.

With a SB weapon gilgamesh is still plenty useful, but he's not going to be taking a spot from someone that can do what he does plus has a SB.

For me gilg used to be in my party all the time. Now I only really use him in IX events/dungeons where my only good synergy weapons are fists that my usual team can't equip.

I started lightning returns, and while I don't want to bust out a guide are there any particularly good sidequests I should make sure not to miss?

Also do I have to wait til Midnight to get this last passcode number? I've found npcs who will tell me the other 3 codes even though I already found them but the 4th one is in the warrens and I haven't found anyone who says what it is

Gilgamesh isn't bad for the reasons given by the posters but I found that even with his SSB he's an easily replaceable unit given adequate SBs and weapons on other chars.

I have his SSB and AoE dmg + hi regen doesn't cut it anymore for U+ level bosses. I'd rather take the (imo) objectively weaker skill set of Beatrix because Magic Blink and high single target dmg is way better than what Gil can offer.

Sidequests only increase your stats and give you money. The more important stuff like stuff that deals with your schemeta (garbs, weapons, spells) is all acquired through chests/battle/shops. So when it comes to sidequests just focus on the stuff you can complete and if your stuck on one go focus on another (the game tells you as much early on).

that's more a testament to how strong the abilities tend to be though. Their regular abilities are the same effects you'd otherwise need SBs for. The idea is you can get bards that also have a good SB and they just bring tons of shit to the table.

When they get their 5* and 6* skill they get a little bit more useful though.

- no shitty random battles, ATB system is fast and fluid, especially in XIII-2

Are all staples of Final Fantasy games. Yes FFs are AAA RPG productions, so they're "better" than no-production-value barely above RPGMaker shit tier games, those games in question DID have the Final Fantasy title on them, so they need to compete against the rest of the series, and that requires more than fulfilling the stable marks of being a FF title.

That's really just a stylistic choice in the RPG world. Some series stick to random encounters, some series stick to enemies visible on the map. It was a break from the previous FF series when they changed it up in 12, but it's just down to peoples personal preference and you'll find just as many people that prefer games that do it the other way.

The average FF game's combat boils down entirely to just using your strongest attack over and over again. Managing the stagger bar is far more involved than the combat in most FF games: you need to find a good balance between building the stagger bar at a steady pace, not dying and slowing down the stagger bar so it doesn't deplete the moment you need to go on the defensive or get stunned or knocked into the air.

It also avoids the major pitfall of most modern FF games where everyone just becomes identical at high levels: even with all roles being available to everyone, certain characters are clearly better than others at specific roles and everyone can't learn every ability. Between that, animation differences (and even functional differences with the same skill, such as Sazh's Blitz being completely unique), meaningful weapon choices and each character's ultimate move there's a lot of room to do your own thing rather than being shoehorned into a specific strategy.

See, I liked the way Stagger worked. Seeing the difference between a shitty strategy and a good one is incredibly satisfying in XIII. Objectively wrong. You may not want to, but saying there's no room for it or the game doesn't encourage it is incorrect. If all you want is a clear of course you can brute force your way with whatever crap you want to do but its hardly unique among games in that regard. I can also junction to strength and spam limit breaks all day but to say that junction didnt give me room to mix things up is not true.

That's simply untrue. I can't recall a single regular enemy that took more than two staggers to kill and only a handful of optional bosses that did, and XIII's bonus bosses are nothing that hasn't been done before in the series in terms of length (compared to X and XII they aren't even a drop in the ocean).

And boohoo about the game not being handholdy enough: the tutorials explain what each role does and the early game forces you into two person parties where mixing up your roles is encouraged. The fact that you're taking forever to beat enemies and getting sub-5* ratings should tip anyone who isn't braindead off that there might be more effective strategies.

He only had two skills during that fight actually. Minor Fortuna was an AoE astra that saved my mages from a Shaman spamming veils, Gambit apparently heals or petrifies on a coinflip, and it instakilled the enemy Zealot.
He also hits like a ton of bricks.

But XIII was already handholdy, in all the wrong ways. The reason people didn't get to the more advanced mechanics was because they assumed there WEREN'T any after the game hits you over the head with so many "duurrrrrr press X to attack" tutorials that several people even quit because of it.

I'm not saying there should've been more tutorials, I'm saying that they should've replaced the shitty basic tutorials with ones that actually introduced the more advanced/nonstandard mechanics.

I hate Lightning and XIII-1 a lot (XIII-2 is great and Serah is the fourth best protagonist), but Lightning Returns is my favorite Final Fantasy. It has nothing to do with Lightning, although it's a side bonus to humiliate her with ridiculous costumes. LR is great for gameplay reasons. That being said them making her the straightman made her the most tolerable she's ever been in my opinion.

If you're looking into LR for story or characters, you'll be disgusted. As such you shouldn't and everything non-gameplay becomes hilarious instead.
