The weapon triangle and the group cohesion are indeed things I want to strife for.

I personally am a really big fan of the grid-based tactical combat myself as well so I'm going to go for that, but I think that fire emblem combat goes a bit too fast and has a more hit&run feel to it, so I plan to introduce a gridlock system in place:
when initiating combat on a unit you get gridlocked forced to fight out the fight over the next turns until a unit dies, other units attacking gridlocked units(flanking) get advantage on attacks. Thieves will be able to disengage freely ect.

The only problem I have with the series overall mechanically is that Speed is an overpowered stat, has been for a long time and still is. Like it essentially doubles the damage output of a unit which in many cases makes it a stat even more desirable than Strength or Magic a lot of the time, and makes units that don't have enough of it to reach doubling thresholds on enemies inherently much worse combat-wise since they're doing only half the damage they could otherwise.

Team Blue = Unit A + C
Team Red = Unit B + D
Lets say unit A initiates on unit B, unit A and B will do the regular swings at eachother, then unit C as an archer chimes in and hits B for bonus damage(advantage)

on team blue's(unit B) turn he is able to move freely, but doing so breaks the gridlock resulting in a free weapon swing from A (D&D attack of opportunity), or he can initiate attack back and continue the cycle. pressing end turn/waiting without an action will initiate the attack as well.

Now if team blue decides to have unit D attack unit A (adjacent) as well he will enter the gridlock in a 2v1, and unit B is allowed to disengage for free and unit D will take over the gridlock

this should make mounted units/generals ect. feel a lot more powerful

Well the thing with mounted units right now is that the game heavily favors hit & run, but mounted units right now are just regular units with +3/4

in my version fights between units will take a lot longer(stats, defenses ect.), so you can't just blitz into enemy ranks and kill 4 units, because you'll just get gridlocked by their melee and get piled on

Their role will also change a bit, they'll probably be more of a ranged killer to gridlock archers & mages rather then straight up generals with 8 MS like in the current games.

a9lh is a fucking lengthy process but worth it in my opinion. Also DLC won't work with loadiine unless you actually own it yourself, since loadiine doesn't patch the "do you own the DLC" check thingy.
