God that was annoying. First I had to fight the Axis for Czechoslovakia, then a year later the Comintern for Romania. Manage to beat them both, but because you apparently get more war score for bombing then you do for actually doing shit, Britain got first peace and made a German Republic. So then I had to fight all the Allies as well. Thank god China joined the Allies just before the Democratic Japan declared war on them and I was able to get in with them.

But these borders a fucking disgusting. Guess the only way to have nice ones is to war alone, otherwise everyone else will just grabs bits all over.

If I understand >>145404861 right, they built an AI that decides how to modify their divisions based on a set of weights (so, e.g., if adding X to the division adds 5 soft attack and 10 build_cost_ic, it has a net value of +2, and if Y adds 5 soft attack, 5 hard attack, and 12 build_cost_ic, it has a net value of +1, so the AI will choose X more often than Y, even though Y is probably better.)

Destroying 60% of the British navy in a handful of months is probably one of most satisfying things I've done in a grand strategy game. I almost don't want to declare war on the USA until it is entirely destroyed.

I got my navy crushed by USA and British joint fleet. Had 2 carriers left after the end of it. There was storm in both major engagements and my carriers were unable to launch fighters. It was a sad day. Not that it didn't come at a brutal cost to the Brits and Americans. Pretty much all 3 fleets were vaporized with only stragglers left on each side by the end of it. What followed was a year of them raiding my convoys and killing entire divisions in transit. Nothing major, just garrison divisions, but it was a horrible loss of material and supplies. AND convoys. Ever seen the convoy number tick to 0? I have.

Managed to actually finish a game of HoI 4, enjoyed it a lot. Typically can't even finish games with the late game lag.

AI builds tens of thousands of planes and shit load of small divisions which I presume are the source of the end game lag among other things.
The game also grinds to a halt when ever the air window is open which seems like a performance bug that might get fixed at some point.


Played as Japan, took down soviets with Germany in 1945 and invaded USA in 1948, UK in 1950 and by May 1950 the Allies collapsed as UK was their last big member. Only surviving alliance member was Bolivia I believe since my South American divisions couldn't get to them before UK collapsed.

Air superiority is imperative to a successful offense so build a ton of planes, as I said earlier the AI will have tens of thousands of them so you need a lot to wrestle air control from them. Logistics companies is by far the most important since any fighting will shit on the infrastructure and grind your advance to a quick halt. Logistics companies alleviate that a bit, always have them in all of your field units and keep them up to date. Field hospitals are also paramount if you are ever going to be fighting a war you aren't in control off. You can replace the hospital with maintenance company instead for your heavy equipment divisions.

I actually like a lot of the mechanics of this game over 3. One infuriating point over 3 is the way air areas work though. Not such a big problem in European front but over in Asia, USA or SA some of the air areas are really big and unless your planes have really long range you will be flying with very limited mission efficiency, even if the are you are actually targeting is well within the range of your planes or even the next province from your air port. I recommend saving your Air Experience and putting it into plane models with increased range (and reliability to counter the negative effect of the range).

Relative to every other video game economic simulation, yes, it's god tier. Relative to real economy, no, it's shit but there is no alternative. Even other "economy management" games like Patrician and Anno are way less complex than Vicky and they also don't offer the grand top down view instead focusing on small outposts or cities.

The idea that equipment like ships take steel to produce, etc creates a dynamic demand for very specific strategic resources. I wouldn't be surprised if they made a Victoria 3 with a lot of mechanics from HoI4.

Maybe. People keep saying how Vicky 3 is Paradox's HL3 but I actually don't think that. The problem with HL3 is that everyone expects some grand nebulous things from it and everyone has their own vision of what perfect HL3 should be like and, if they ever released it, they'd never satisfy vast majority of people. Whereas with Vicky 3 their goals are actually really clear and well defined: they need to improve economic and population simulation. That's it, just make those two simulations more complex and clean up shitty mechanics from two like leadership or westernization and that's it.
