Are ranged and magic builds viable in this game? Haven't started playing yet, but after the playing the every souls game previously as well as bloodborne, I would like to try ranged, or magic, if it's doable.

Ranged is viable, if not a little monotonous. You basically do a quality build with Composite for close range, Dragonrider for sniping, and Pharis' for bosses (WA helps with big targets). Hawk Ring/Feather Arrows help keep damage at range at a premium. Onislayer isn't bad either.

Crossbows are too weak and slow except for Avelyn, which is annoyingly ammo hungry. Although the new patch should make it much more fun to use!

Playing with no melee at all really changes how you approach the game and I enjoyed it, although I might dabble in pyromancy if I decide to do it again, just for variety and to help make some bosses and areas less tiresome.

Prisoners chain is a good ring, if you have low VIG. At high levels of VIG diminishing returns start to kick in, which combined with extra damage dealt to you makes prisoners chain not worth it. At high levels of VIG ring of favour +2 and life ring +3 are the best choices for increasing your health, because they add a certain procentage of your total health and do not directly increase vig.

Give me some weapon suggestions for a SL 20 build please. People are a bit panicky sometimes and just run away a lot, so need a good catching up weapon, been using pole and estoc with some firebombs. Then there's the issue of fighting 2-3 people and getting stunlocked, is there a point to get some hyper armor weapon for this? I can't invest too much into str for the bit fat weapons (started Mercenary).
I'm also looking for a high crit weapon for ripostes, what's good with not insane stat req?

I'm through the game already so got all rings and weapons etc available.

Pretty sure the poise still doesn't do shit in this game, that said yes it is amazing once you realize that the true power of it is the R2, not the R1. It's one of the longest reach attacks in the game, if not the longest, 1H or 2H doesn't matter.

Also the running R1 charge isn't even that bad if you know when to use it properly. Basically the WA charge take a little while with an animation before running in, but with L2 R2 you can run much farther than a running R1 and do more damage. The running R1 mini-charge is good because it's instant: you immediately go into the running charge attack, no startup animation. It's useful because I usually do what I call "counterthrust fishing" where I'll run at people to try and bait them to swing, circling back just out of their range and then trying to R2 them in the middle of their attack animation. I also throw in some running R2's even against people with no parry tool, the tracking and distance is actually quite good so I never get punished for it. When people get used to the counterthrust fishing you can surprise them with a running R1 sometimes and fuck their day up, it's great when used tactically.

Oh also the WA charge has hyper armor, something to keep in mind. They can only either parry it (but you never charge into a parry item anyways) or get out of the way. They could block it too of course but I've guardbroken any medium shield that has cared to try. Also offhand rapier/estoc is essential imho, and I switch between 2H and 1H throughout the match (mostly 2H so the estoc surprises the shit out of people when it comes out).

Good to see some love for my favorite weapon in the game though. I feel like it's really underappreciated, people don't know how to use the WA and running R1 properly or they R1 spam, get parried, and think the weapon is trash. It's definitely a weapon that will reward you once you learn how to play properly with it, patience and outspacing people, counterthrust fishing, etc.

Making a low level build. What's the best SL/weapon level that'll give me the most areas to invade?

I read it might be sl 30/weapon +2. Gives you high wall to catacombs.

Straight Swords are OP in Dark Souls 3, not so much in DaS1.

-Make sure you attack every chest you come across, especially ones from Sen's Fortress onward, and make sure you never get hit by them.
-Blocking is worthless unless you're using a greatshield, which requires a lot of strength, which you shouldn't dump points into unless you're using a weapon that scales off of strength.
-Explore around firelink shrine a lot, you'll come across a talisman for free which you can use to cast miracles to give you a huge boost of healing early on.
-There's nothing wrong with exploring the graveyard, just don't progress too far and if you find a bonfire in a cave, don't rest at it unless you want to be stuck behind some tough enemies for a long time.
