I think it's implied that the Abyss Watchers are descended from Carthus, and picked up the mantle of Abyss Watching after it consumed their lord and ruined their civilization. That's why their own Mausoleum is connected to the Catacombs at large.

Alright guys, we're back at it with a little series I like to call "The General Thread". First off, lets give a show of appreciation to our good ole /dsg/. Now a lot of times -- or should I say most of the time. Actually I cant even say that, the vast majority of times -- the primary form of posting in these threads are pictures. And that’s alright; thats cool and everything, but to turn around and uh... you know, disrespect others for not posting pictures... Well I only have one thing to say to hotshots like you: Get off it.

If you think that pictures are more important than all the writing styles, all the information, and uh... all the community contributions, well then I suggest you re-evaluate your posting style.

Now before any of you jokers from the reporting brigade jump on me, I am not dissing the usefulness of pictures. But until you can demonstrate for YOURSELVES, that you can have a successful and positive thread using ONLY images, then you cannot refute my beliefs. Besides, here in the brigade we like to do things a little differently.

Now it's funny, because every single high speed pasta reporter and every hotshot image poster who has come in here with their ridiculous accusations, not a single one has been able to demonstrate that images can be used as the primary form of communication. And that's that.

It's also weird in that the Catacombs of Carthus provide a direct link from Farron Keep to Irithyll, to the point that the people of Irithyll bothered to build a proper exit around the cave after Wolnir, but there's a blocked road which would imply that the way the player goes is indirect, but I have no idea where that blocked road would come from, because the big road from Lothric castle just leads to the Undead Settlement

I fucking came. I'm so fucking happy now that I've discovered the true power of the long spear and how to use it effectively, how to properly space and counterattack and adjust attack timings and how to play around parrying which (used to be, for me at least) its biggest weakness. I'm still not sure if it can be parried at the tip or not (like halberds and glaives can't be parried at max range), but it hasn't happened yet and I've been trying on purpose just to test it so seems like good news to me.

Still, this multi-victory was so delicious to end the night.

Every new character I create I always rush a Anri+4 skipping Dancer and pumping Luck to 40 so I can have a really strong weapon with little to no investment because luck also helps with farming. I go through the entire game with it and when I do get invaded I usually destroy the invader because it's a dumbass straight sword and I feel so guilty but I just want the game to be over so I can go to pontiff with my new try out build.

If there was one thing I wish Dark Souls 2 and 3 learned from Dark Souls, it would be to not have a level up girl. There's just the first reason of convienence, being able to level up whereever you are, really, but there are other reasons. Yeah, I know a ton of you probably like the Emerald Herald and the Fire Keeper, and I understand that they have those level up women there so that you have more reason to come back to the home base and do things like side quests, but having fire keepers around makes the atmosphere weaker for me. You're the only character that level up girl is helping level up, no one else is going to get with her. In Dark Souls 1, you leveled up at bonfires, the things that all Hollows are drawn to. In Dark Souls 1 you felt much more like any other hollow, going on the same quest that many others have. Your enemies and friends are strong because they too used those bonfires to grow, it felt like you were all on the same level. With the level up girls though, it feels too much like you're somehow more special, no one else can level up but you and the people who hang out with these fire keepers. You're no longer a pilgrim, you're a homebody. There could have been better ways to bring you back to Firelink.

I'm torn on what to do for my next build
Dark-based buff build. Kill Sirris for Sunless Talisman so I can cast Dark Blade optimally as soon as possible and build the character around using low requirement raw weapons (Corvian Greatknife, etc) and later incorporate Lifehunt Scythe and Dark Edge for a general melee-focused dark caster

OR

Morne's Hammer build with minimum requirements to wield the hammer and Farron Ring with a simple offhand for maximum WA mileage.

WAs being usable without FP was stated very clearly in official pre-release promotions to be a very intended feature. A lot of WAs have meticulously balanced penalties for being used at 0FP, like the Carthus Greatsword, that fails to combo when used with no FP, or the Wolf Knight GS, that triples its stamina costs at 0 FP.

The patch notes are most likely referring to the ability to get a WAs full, unpenalized effects with only 1 FP, which is what made the simple infusion so godlike.

For once we are in agreement. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed actual spells as much as I did in DD. The only problem from a gameplay point of view is that the actual casting process can get pretty boring, and it's easy to just get up on any sort of ledge and Maelstrom the whole world.

If you could do something like miniaturized versions of spells like Frigor in Dark Souls instead of Soul Arrow Variant 16B, it would be a lot more fun gameplay. There's more than enough setup for Crystal Magic to be more diverse than it is.

it's probably comparable to longswords, except it's all thrust so it's perfect for leo ring builds. it's longer than a rapier (but heavier and doesn't have an offhand parry, as shitty as that offhand parry is) and does more damage for a quality build than the irithyl one. Then you've got crystal sage rapier which I believe is only better if you're a sorcery build.

it makes you unparriable because it's extremely fast and gives you two sets of attack speeds to work with. you run at someone and they expect a running R1 and instead you let them whiff and punish them with the estoc pokes, or you R1 a few times which they have the timing down for and roll around but then you hit them with the estoc because it's a faster timing, when they were expecting the slower spear timing.

it's just great for playing around parrying and making you more unpredictable in general, great for roll caching. like i said it's mainly for leo ring builds (great with astora or profaned GS as well for example, or RH halberd), if you're doing more of a strength build you'd probably want dark sword instead or some other longsword.

it just lets you easily mix fast and medium/slow attacks effectively, when you have both out people don't know which one you're going to attack with or in what combination. you can also switch between 1H and 2H, and even hold down Y or Triangle to switch to 2H'ing the estoc/longsword if you want. just makes you really versatile.

I did that. I literally spent an entire night in my first playthrough of the game getting massively drunk on vodka while completing my sunbro covenant requirements by fighting the Old Demon King literally 30 times in a row. Actually ended up being more like 40 or so now that I think about it. Felt really good back then, the souls experience was still fresh (DS3 is my first souls game) and I thought it was really cool how people gestured like they were so thankful and you were so awesome for helping them. I mean, it was mostly imaginary I assume, but I didn't give a fuck and enjoyed playing along.

That said, I want to experience everything in DS3. I made a quality build and made a backup save with 2 slabs so I can try out all of the different weapons, I've done a ton of SL120 pontiff duels, and now just started doing invasions/gank spanks.

It's not about permission, it's a part of the game. Figuring out and eventually actually accomplishing the defeat of a dedicated gank squad is thrilling.

How about instead of being so bitter that a simple infusion doesn't get you a free crystal soul spear every 4 seconds you realize that being to use weapon arts every few seconds adds to the game, it adds to weapon diversity, and it adds to fun. Spells are spells, there are costs whether it be mana or the cast number is set per attunement of the spell. Do not even fucking begin to equate a spell cast of something like crystal soul spear to the usage of a weapon art. Honestly I'd be completely fine with soul spear being casted every few seconds too, I'll dodge it every time I don't care -- but to leave straight swords as they are as if they're totally ok and then to nerf everything else only shows me that From is a fucking joke and can't balance weapons or fun for shit
