Outpost borders do not grow on their own.
Planetary borders grow with pop and tech.
Give one planet the Land of Opportunity Edict to make its borders grow faster.
Once both borders touch they'll combine their growth.

Last night I tried to assault a tropical planet as a Human with 7 armies after decimating their fleet and tearing down their fortifications to 0 and I still lost.

Do I need to research tropical colonization in order to conquer these planets?

That is sort of an indicator that somebody regards it as their holy planet.

They have modifiers called "Holy World".
If a planet has the "Holy World" modifier, it means that it is a holy world to the fallen empire.
While hovering the "Holy World" modifier you can read that FE will fuck you up if you colonize it.

Besides the Holy Planet thing, they always have names that don't match the rest of the system naming theme.

Its a pretty huge tip-off.

You can usually colonize like, one or two maybe if you have an Embassy with them and just try to not piss them off.

Here's what I'm working with now. There have been some conflicting posts on whether or not I should go with Thrifty, Communal, or Conformists (among others) but I feel that the extra Energy will be worth the most in the long run, allowing me to field a bigger fleet while disregarding the limit, or permitting me to allocate more Pops to Science tiles instead of to Power Plants.

I'm not sure if Science Directorate is the way to go anymore; Despotic Hegemony would give me another 5% to research -- and later a full 10%, for a total of 30% between Ethos, Traits, and Government. Maybe I should stick with Science Directorate in the early game to get a better chance of locking down the 'core' technologies before moving over to Neural Network Administration once it becomes available later on?

Anyway, any further advice regarding improvement would be greatly appreciated.

Science Directorate is kind of bad, but early game I can see the extra tech choices being very useful and make you less prone to bad rng.

I don't think it is worth it.
Mod Thrifty in on energy worlds instead if you're worrying about the long run.
Preferably on Earthbound presentients.

Industrious could be used for tempo, but kind of lackluster in the long run.
Go with Communal or Conformist imo.
Communal is just 1 point right?
If so I'd say keep both the negative traits anyways, even if you don't need to.

After attack you can set demands. Check pop ups or Warscore table. But its timed so care not to miss it.
Also forcing enemy to cede you planets increase your threat.
Liberating planets and vassalising/diploannexing them not so much(even better liberating actually lower threat and new nation have the same ethics like you so they start converting pops to your ethics even before vassalising).

Which research exactly are you falling behind on? All of them? In my current game (although maybe I got lucky), I set up a 20+ size world as my main science world. I only built physics labs and the unique empire building that gives 5 science of each category. Focusing mainly on physics research allowed me to develop energy and weapons technologies, the former being extremely important for setting up an energy planet. After that, and having vassalized/liberated my neighbors, I set up two more science planets, one for engineering and another one for society research. When particle lances came up as an option, I could research it in 33 months, and it wasn't even 2300. It also helps that I have droid-only mineral colonies, too.

Follow his instructions until about 2:35
Make sure it's owner 0 and the right fleet name etc.
Scroll a little further down where he is and change 'mia=yes' to 'mia=no'

After reading every single one of these fucking threads and watching a few videos, I admit there doesn't seem to be much to do in Stellaris.

But god, is it pretty.

I was expecting Victoria 2-level graphics since that's the last game I actually played. This is hands down the best-looking game Paradox has ever made. I can understand where all the DLC money goes now.

I remember the religious nutjob FE in my last game having that as a reason for disliking me, but I had colonized half a dozen tomb worlds with the uplifted presentients by the time I noticed it and I assumed that one of those worlds was a holy world.

I have an embassy with them, and that actually made them sort of no longer hate me. They're still condescending but at least they stopped being outright hostile.

I'll colonize a few holy worlds when the Tachyon Lance BBs are available in fleet strength.

Hey civ4x general, I had posted possible abilities for the Byzantine civ in civ 6 in literally the last thread before this general was dead for 2 months, what do you think of them?

Theme System: Military Units stationed in forts cost no maintenance.

City of The World's desire: adjacent tiles worked by the original capital each provide 1 faith(probably won't work as well now with districts), 5% of food of every city is sent to the original capital
These bonuses do not transfer to another capital when the original one is captured.

If you're falling behind regulars you're either blobbing too hard in the early game or not building enough labs.
Your buildings, food and happiness excepted, should probably have something like a 5:3:1 ratio between labs, power plants and mines.

0.02*569+1 modifier. I'm on preclark so not 0.01 and no 0.1 for each planet.

My physics is lacking though, maybe overall my research is lacking right now since I expanded a lot of energy/mineral worlds to block off space in the last 20-40 years, before that my overall research was fine.
I had two good weapons from engineering and was in no rush to get a mostly redundant weapon from physics.

I researched from the options that were given to me, ignored lasers since they suck, took deflectors since I thought they were good. Would've taken Shield if I knew it was an option.

Techs that let you upgrade labs are obviously helpful, but more than anything else getting lucky with planets with lots of +research tiles is incredibly helpful.
A governor with "Intellectual" trait helps too.
Finally, don't colonize tiny-ass planets. There's a flat penalty to research costs per planet you have. Only take planets that are worth taking.

Early game anomalies can get you some large +research modifiers on celestial bodies, early robots can free your pops from food and minerals so you ca assign them to labs and early Assist Research can boost it quite a bit.
Other than that just colonize to cover as much territory as possible (rather than clumping up) to build research stations everywhere you can and colonize only ~16+ size planets to not get fucked over by the planet penalty.
And spam labs.

And at 569 pops that's at minimum 23 planets (if 25 tiles for each) so that's well into the game it also seemed strange to still have those low level techs. But as long as you're winning who cares.

The fighter concept is pretty low tech.
1 fighter = 1 small weapon in stellaris. So a corvette could have up to 3 fighters on it if the game had hangars that small. As it is though hangars can only be swapped out for large mounts on cruisers or battleships

I found out it's really much comfier once it's like 10 enemies on a huge map. Cause once the first 4-5 are conquered it becomes much more personal, you recognize the races and alliances are smaller and all. Plus you still have freedom to move around, plan, etc.

I highly reccommend a comfy game like that.
