Regardless, all we can make are mere imitations. EXALT, their unflinching zeal for the encoder, cheeky static and glitchy maneuvers are forever lost to time.
Modders are more interested in porting shit over from other games adding in more and more tacticool operator gear, and lord knows what Jake and his boys are thinking anymore.

I'm not saying that the cosmetics can't be made to look alright, but by and large they're pretty bleh.

It's also kinda hard the use the angle of "Resistance winning the hearts and minds of the people" when you're going around in sleeveless, spiked armor, skinning aliens and wearing them, and mounting the heads of ADVENT soldiers in the armory.

I understand that Jake wants to stand out and have his DLCs feel distinct from all the operator and supersoldier-style cosmetic mods, but they just look so... bad. And hardly fitting, even for a resistance.

I had lots of fun playing on my second campaign. My first ended with a squad wipe from activating the Viper King too early and not knowing what type of strategy to use.. If you wait until magnetic weapons before going to Big Sky's origin point the rulers are fun, challenging enemies. If you do it earlier, they will fuck your mouth hard and fast.

Used correctly they're insanely good. You can wade into a field of ayys that would have caused serious trouble for your squad, mind merge and one for all and have most of the attacks get DRed to 0. They also get decent accuracy and have stupidly high amounts of health at the end

Ya, but evidently that is the reason the you don't see MECs until basically late game. MECs can only become pod followers around the same time that Elite MECs show up. It isn't a subtle plan to introduce Shen's Last Gift, Jake just "fixed" his game.

Easiest solution I can think of is unsubscribe from that mod, restart steam, then resubscribe to that mod. It should show up at the bottom of the list now.

I saw someone using this cosmetic mod and thought it looked perfect for some of my team members, but it has some clipping issues. The screenshots I saw didn't have this issue. I tried giving them different leg options, etc. but none of them really fix it.

I'm not really certain I would call it one of the deepest strategy games on the market. Most people enjoy it. The ones who don't tend to complain about the fact that most of your missions are time based - you get a limited amount of turns to complete them. It would be fine if it happened every once in a while, but it can honestly add up to be like 60-70% of the game where you're on a timer.

UFO: Enemy Unknown (XCOM: UFO Defense) with the OpenXCom tends to be a pretty popular pick for people who enjoy the games as a whole. It's a bit more in-depth than XCom EU/EW or XCOM 2. Enemy Within is fun as well, but 2 did add a lot of improvements. The workshop support alone makes 2 very nice as you can customize it with a great deal of mods that significantly enhance the gameplay (most are just cosmetic, but you can do stuff like turn off timers if you want).

Try XCOM with OpenXCom. If you like that, you'll probably like XCom EW or 2.

I'd just point out that Long War is a big draw for the genuine strategy fans - if you end up enjoying EW, move on to that mod. It's the most extensive and enjoyable overhaul mod I've ever played, although it can get a bit heavy-handed on the RNG with its airgame even for me. Try it out, and don't be afraid to mod it.

I guess the logic is that the RNG represents accuracy from 1-100 so if you're super accurate and roll a 100 you hit a crit but if you're only mildly accurate you get a dodge memed, the issue crops up when dodge, hit and crit are squished in to 99-100 due to full cover so everything that hits is a crit.

So I just finished my Alien Hunters playthrough. It has been awhile since I finished a mostly vanilla campaign, but I didn't remember 6 ayy pods on the final level. I was able to breeze through the Avatars thanks to the Hunter weapons and armors though.

Cyberjack, Isfet, and Oddball were all lost on the same mission, a facility infiltration run, and Wasp Eater, Black Sky, and Moonshade just barely escaped with 1-2 HP left.

It was a damn massacre. By a stroke of seriously bad luck, we somehow managed to trigger, all at once... the archon king, 3 other archons, 2 ADVENT, a sectopod, and an andromedon. Oddball was the first to go. Isfet fell unconscious, but Wasp Eater woke him up and he was the only reason why the rest of the squad wasn't wiped out. The rest of my squad want revenge for that mission.

Also, I just triggered the ADVENT network tower mission for the first time. If I leave it alone, do I fail the campaign? Are there repercussions? I'm not sure I want to end this campaign just yet.

There are several QoL mods for LW now, like alien sight range indicator, what enemies you have LoS on at X tile, loadout saver.

Pic related, the thinmen are unactivated but I spoted them with a battlescanner, the yellow ring around them is their LoS range (goes away when you are in combat, but can configure it to stay on if you want to), and the green circles around them mean that for the unit I have the tile I have my mouse highlighted over could see all of them.

Oh there is also the enhanced tactical information mod. Which in the F1 menu it will display all your soldiers other stats, like mobility, defense, DR. And it will also give you a tally for total aliens killed on the mission and whatever activate aliens are out there. Useful for when the camera does dumb shit when a pod reveals itself and you can't even see what you are fighting because it decided to go look at a civilian or something, just hit F1 and it will say like/ "3 mutons, 2 floaters, 2 seekers" or whatever.

Explosives+squad sight attacks can't be countered by their PSI Lance, so that's free damage. And wounding them imposes battle fatigue (even in non red fog playthroughs), which lowers their will ever so slightly so their next set of psi attacks do less damage (their damage is based on the difference between their will and their targets will).

A good old fashion mech punch is nice too. not so bad on their own, but if they get loose without you quickly killing them, or groups patrol into you while you are trying to deal with them then good fucking luck.

This was always my issue with them, if you get lucky and find one a fair distance away from your squad pretty much on its own, they're fine but if you don't have room to keep it out of sight, its a fairly large pod, or its a ufo command pod you're going to get absolutely fucked.

Theres ways to deal with them but that doesn't make them balanced.

Hey lads, guy who made XCOM2 mods OP stuff here. Some nice modder uploaded a PS2 Terran Republic helmet mod to the Workshop but took it down a few minutes later, either because of DMCA bullshit or some crippling bug he found. Didn't have the time to catch his name and couldn't find it in the game files so I can't really credit him. I had time to snag it though. A lot of stuff is unfinished/buggy in the version I have - notably the Commisar Cap which shows up black as hell to me - but there are some goodies in here, looks neat. Pic related.

It's still shit for not being NC, but hey. It's PS2 content.

If nobody has any objections I'm adding it to the recommended modlist and putting it in the OP MEGA for y'all to use. It's in the "Armor Customization" section, number 33 if you want to try it out.

After standing the long guard and participating the hype for X2 i left the thread to not be spoiled. Unfortunately my toaster cant run the game, and i'm still unable to replace it so still havent played it, but thats besides the point.
What i want to know, is what /xcg/ stuff did i miss?a few questions:

-Final judgment on the game? Is it replayable, enjoyable still, or its a one trick pony?
-Any must have, gamechanging mods popped up/planned yet (like longdong or final mod pack)?
-Hows beagle doing? Any playthroughs/ vietcom tier memefests worth checking out or he still havent completed a vanila run live and still tries to do complete the first month with his weird "modding"? Still depressed/burned out, or did the new game revitalized him for a while?
-Any new OC or meme worth a darn (a link to a repository maybe?)?

The game is pretty good, overall it's not as good as LW but there are a good number of QoL improvements that it has that LW does not.
Mods are really dependent on personal taste. Although I would definitely go through a vanilla play through before adding any gameplay mods.

Difficult question. The game is really good, with potential for being game of the year for me assuming mods continue at this pace and Shen's Last GIft is good. Considering how so-and-so EU was before EW I'm optimistic - 2's state is amazing considering it's predecessor's state at a similiar point in development.

The short answer is no, everything is too modular for that to exist. Also add on that the scene is young - LW took years.

He drops by here a bit more often which is hella neat, he seems to be doing good. I personally liked his modding-heavy stuff so I can't argue in either direction. He's got an interesting playthrough where he's adamant he will not be switching around and modding anything more - it's also really fun, including a beta-version of an overhaul mod that transforms XCOM into more of a guerilla force.

I can't speak for all of /xcg/, but...

1) I though X2 was a good successor to EW. Bad launch, but many of the issues have since been resolved. Still could use some optimization work. Mods a definite must if you want a significant amount of replayability, don't expect anything like LW.

2) Guerilla War is sounding like the LW of X2 right now. Focuses on making the game more like a Resistance fighter simulator (picking your battles, extracting what you can from the field, having to eventually retreat on most missions, etc.) Some very good cosmetic mods have come out namely Capnbub's Accessories Pack. There's a bunch of neat little mods, ranging from adding new weapons and enemies, to new mission types. Take time to browse around the workshop.

3) Beagle's been off and on. He came here recently and talked for a while about what he's been doing and why he's inactive. He's looking to get back into the swing of things, and has some non-XCOM related videos he wants to post to Youtube. He's doing a Guerilla War + other mods run on stream, and he's trying to control the amount of modding he's doing so that he finds a balance of difficulty, depth, and entertainment.

4) There was some waifuposting and characterizing the ayys some weeks ago, thought that kind of became a shitstorm after a while (some anon actually went to an X2 thread on /v/ to bitch about it.) Other than the /xgc/, I dunno. I'm not a memer.

Just installed the game, about to start my first run-through. Where does this game rank as far as difficulty compared to the last one? Are the DLC missions alright, or an annoyance?

I've seen one person comment that the Veteran difficulty is too easy, so I'm thinking Commander, and some saying that the Alien Hunter DLC ruins the progression by dropping OP mobs into early missions, so perhaps disabling that.

Should I ignore that and go Comm with the DLC enabled, or am I about to get fucked in the ass on a first run if I do?

XCOM 2 is definitely harder than EW. Even after a couple Veteran runs and a Commander run, I still have trouble early game with my Commander campaigns though I need to git gud.

Alien Hunters is a mixed bag. On one hand, the mission you go on in it is fucking rad, and the weapons you get early on help for more difficult campaigns. On the other, the Rulers fuck up game balance by breaking established rules of the game, and when you beat them, the gear you get is so powerful that the rest of the campaign becomes far easier than it already is.

It's personal preference, but know that Rulers is so-so, and the game suffers from the inverted difficulty EW did.

I won't say that the rulers are easy, but if you are prepared and know their patterns they aren't too bad. Wait until magnetic weapons before doing the Viper mission, give bolt caster and hunter's axe to a ranger (I prefer a blademaster), start off the encounter with a freeze grenade, and try to put repeaters on everything (I like hair triggers too). Free actions or merged actions (like Lightning Hands, a sword attack, or Rapid Fire) are nice because rulers only get an action after you spend 1 AP. Threat Assessment can also be used on someone with Guardian to get lots of shots off.

Rulers will not appear in back to back missions, however rulers will appear within the next three missions after that. Try to get a Shadow Chamber ASAP and learn how to read it for rulers. If every mission has mutons on it and you are expecting the berserker queen, guess what will be on the next mission.

Long War Studios is incredibly over-rated. Long War has some good parts, but so much of it is "arbitrary difficulty = good game design". I don't know about the technical side but their XCOM2 stuff seems to have a lot of issues despite them working with Firaxis

There are 5 new ADVENT landing every turn plus the 20+ enemies the map started with. They are landing on literally every side of my little firebase, every man is down to half health or less. If I pull this off it will be legendary, but it looks bleak. 5 turns to go.

I'm probably late to this, but i remember people were wondering who "Cato" was, and people assumed he was council man, he isn't. Cato is a different dude and he actually has recorded dialogue.

He doesn't say anything interesting though, sounds like cut content because he says things like

I frigging made it! Those meat shield resistance fighters they gave you apparently decided that it was time to go balls to the wall. Taking on mutons, zombies, and ADVENT with frag grenades, assault rifles, and several layers of tissue paper, they made all the difference. I used them as a mobile reserve, pinning down the dropping ADVENT troops while my squad chipped away at the onrushing wall of everything else.

Highlights include:
