Most FOEs, you will want to come back to fight them after you clear the boss for that area.

But for some FOEs, it is possible to kill them before you advance a lot past them. You may want to try fighting them if you feel confident and like you have a good set up. The rewards are quite good and can even make the floor bosses much easier

You'll get way more mileage out of early skills like Patch Up and save yourself way more time in the long run, compared to the measly 2 levels you lose from resting in the early game. Invest in skills that help you now; regaining 2 levels is pretty trivial.

Retire only grants a buff to the new replacement adventurers if the retired adventurer is level 30+, with the boost to stats increasing every 10 levels. The new adventurer will start from level 1.

It's never strictly necessary in any of the games; but if you do want to use it I would recommend retiring one character at a time and using the other characters to grind the character up.

It's hard to really make straight comparisons though because on one hand there's a lot of broken combinations in the old games that can nullify a lot of the challenge, which makes the games a cakewalk for certain party compositions where other party compositions might struggle (i.e. Medic Immunize in EO, Axcela spam into Dominate in EO2, etc.)

On the other hand, the newer games introduce balances across most party members that allow for a lot of synergies and a wider variety of party compositions, which means there aren't as many clearly dominant party compositions.

In my opinion the best gauge of difficulty is being able to say that random floor encounters actually can wipe your party - and in this sense I would say Expert's fairly comparable to the difficulty of the classic DS games, in that it's quite possible to die against random encounters if you don't pay attention and try to make maximum use of your skills and items. Ambushes are also appropriately lethal as well.

1) Is this a good team? Would it be better if I replaced the highlander with a Dark Hunter?

Switching out ho for a dh would give your hexer more things to do since they would be focusing on landing both ailments for your war magus and binds for your dh. Personally I would stick with the hi since he can make it easier for your hexer to land those ailments and its more reliable damage than the dh

I'm playing through EO2U now and my DH is kinda underwhelming, I'm using a whip build for Ecstasy during Rose Prison mostly. It locks down most bosses for a few turns and I can put an Ecstasy Grimoire on my So to hit harder, but doesn't deal much consistent damage. Maybe Swords are better since I'd have more Grimoires to work with?

This is horrendously wrong; using Ecstasy without being in a Force Boost state means there's a ton of damage you aren't doing. Rose Prison is an emergency Break to get you out of a tight spot - it's for situations where you need to bind something ASAP so it doesn't murder your team.

Land binds with other characters and use Force Boost to increase the amount of Ecstasy damage you do. Hexer Force Break (Black Mist) can also extend the length of the bind effect.

Generally speaking you gain far more out of trying to maximize the damage you do in the few turns you have. Consider grimoires like Charge and other attack buffs like Bravants to increase your damage output as well.

I actually think EOU1 or EOU2 are the more representative jump-in points. Not every game has IV's subclassing mechanic or overworld, and story mode is helpful for people who are indecisive about making characters.

Also, most of the games have skill distributions that are "back-loaded" rather than "front-loaded" (i.e. the biggest gains are in the last few points rather than the first few points of a skill), and builds are much more "tiered" in IV.

I'm playing through EOU and have Simon on the front line because he can do some decent damage with his regular attacks in random encounters. He has almost the same Def and Vit as the Highlander.
Can anybody explain to me why the FUCK does he take almost twice more damage than the Highlander?

I just picked up my 3DS after ages wasting my life on other games, and realized I've still got EO1:U installed.

I never got rolling with EO1:U and basically everything I've ever learnt about the game has fallen out the back of my head.


Can some kind anons give me a rundown of which skills are important for the story party, and what the pitfalls are?

Do I max passives first or active abilities?
Is Racoon a frontliner or a backliner? I'm using her as a frontliner at the moment. The same question applies to Simon.

Do I need to care about Grimoires at all?

Actives obviously have more impact on the flow of the battle. But most good ones are locked behind passives, so you'll end up putting at least some points into the passives anyway.

The grimoire system is quite shit in the first Untold.
Just equipping ones you think will be useful on your characters will be enough to clear the story.

Anyone got a Safe Passage grimoire which is at around level 5 or something they'd be okay with sharing?
Obviously there's the level 10 one, but that seems unnecassary for its purpose, and I'd rather not trade away one of my good level 10 grimoires to get it.

Yeah, the sole item, or whatever it is. I'd be more inclined to use them, but I rarely ever take them in my item bag, just because item space is a premium.

Come to think of it, that's one thing I wish they'd fix in future EO games. Limited item space is a really artificial factor that limits how long you spend in dungeons.
A good fix would probably be to limit how many consumable items you can take, but then have a seperate slot for materials, either with a less strict limit, or no limit at all. They pretty much did it for ingredients in EOU2.

I played through with a Dark Hunter, Ronin, Protector - Troubadour, Hexer.

I dunno what you mean by "best support", but I ditched the survivalist in strat 6 after making grimoires from it to spread it to others and replaced with a Hexer. I wish I did it much sooner, between debuffs, binds that land and ailments that actually land.. never survivalist for my next classic run.

The same way you can attach Hexer's debuffs to Survivalist and they will always hit first than your party/mosters.
You can give them Action Boost and with efficiency, you can full heal your party any time with items before a medic.

I know they were the best class in the original for damage, but in the remake they were the best support class instead of damage.

Pretty much you are not supposed to fight them until you are around a level when you can actually defeat them.

Standard allow you to kill FOEs as soon as you can see them. You can kill Ragelopes around level 3 in standard.

If it's your first time playing, fine. Just be aware that unfortunately, the game is not balanced around standard and is balanced around expert.

So you might want to play in expert in a second run.

I remember his Resonance being surprisingly good, but Delayed Chase will definitely be your priority for skill points. Besides that, if you focus grimoires on his Force Aspects, with Force Mastery and Force Energy, you can make him pretty close to self sustainable, especially when/if you get his Battery skill, or whatever it is. You know the one which gives him health regen.

Going through EO1U right now, and thinking that running a sword!dh and a hexer wasn't the best idea. They both work with ailments, but they both run are opposites with them (DH wants to dispel them, Hexer wants to keep them around)

Would it be a good idea to rest one of them to respec? Maybe a Whip DH, or make a find focused Hexer? My team is

Unfortunately, no. If you take your Fafnir from story mode into a Classic new game, he won't earn any unearned abilities from beating the Ginnungagap bosses. So if you want the best possible Fafnir for a Classic playthrough, make sure you transfer across one who's at least beaten the Demi-Fafnir in Story Mode.

I took a Fafnir from a new story game, and instantly ported that team across to a new classic file. I then beat all the Ginnungagap bosses with my own self-made classic class party.
I have no idea if it changes if you actually use Fafnir in those fights, but I very much doubt it.
You could do some checking on another file by playing in Picnic just to verify, and it might only take an hour or so, but if you're not willing to do that, I'd say to err on the side of caution and port over a Fafnir who already has his Akashic Nova unlocked.

Yeah, any character you port over into a new game plus will keep their levels, and their rest/retire status.
I think the rest has a lower level cap of around 20 or 30, when you can't do it anymore though. On other characters it doesn't matter, because you can just reclass them repeatedly at the cost of two levels, but I think the Fafnir character is locked to his class.

War Responce is the better of the pair, for a few reasons.
One, it doesn't eat up buff space, which means you can have that much more damage or defense or whatever you need.
Two, Response activates every time an enemy takes an action, which is much better for healing in responce to getting your shit slapped. This is compared to Artery where you only heal after you move, which might be right before the enemy smacks you for 100 damage while you're at full health.
This doesn't mean response has it's downsides though.
Response eats up a debuff slot on the enemy, which could be used for guard slash or vital shut or what have you. This is generally mitigated by the fact that Artery eats up a slot on every member of your party for the same general amount of healing.
The other downside is that it can be knocked out by Clearance if you're running a princess, which turns some of your better healing into fuel explicitly for Cheer.
