I played mmos in the 90s that had only 2 or 300 players logged in at any given time.

What they need to do, is not have stuff so spread out. Those games worked because there was consolidated group grinding spots, and people would just come on and play togeather for hours and hours.

An mmo really only needs good group grinding spots and classes with fun abilities.

You can kind of see this effect in the (not an mmo) diablo 2, looking at baal runs. That basically condenses down what you need for an mmo to be successful. A repetitive action done as a team, and people can make builds to do well at that action (look at the start of a new ladder before paladinbots show up, you have things like necros providing tanking for the party, good sorcs to tele, its a community effort to get those minnions killed)

Thats all you need. You dont need consumable content, you need good nonconsumable content.

So how much CON do you swordfags roll with?
I have no idea how much I should put into it. I realize I probably won't do any damage even with a fuckton of STR but I don't know how much worse it would be if I go 3:2 STR:CON instead of 4:2 STR:CON.

A level 10 SP pot heals like 1.5k SP, a level 10 HP pot only heals like 2.5k HP

Not only does the drain heal me faster than a hitpoint pot does, but it saves me a lot of money because i dont really use HP pots anymore except in some boss fights, a SP pot can full heal me and have some SP left over for killing things.

Still never bought a campfire. Ive got two sp regen hats so my sp is actually pretty fast at coming back between fights if i just sit for a couple of tics.

Also i dont need to use it unless i mess up, usually. This is a very dangerous zone. Things are immune to sleep here, things are immune to stun. Ive basically got to use raise and gravity pole only. The big ones can only be raised, gravity poled, and bloodbath animation locked, the mages too. The flying jellyfish can be stunned but not slept

debating whether to raise it to 120, i probably dont need to. Ive got some level 5 red gems sitting in storage, i just need some better armor to put it in, and i can also raise my plate armor attribute 30 more levels.

Its the one point of confliction i have in this build. Because my self heal is on a cooldown, i feel like it would be really nice to have like 30k hitpoints, then i can just full heal myself every cooldown and not have to worry. Which is why ive contemplated full con build in the past.

Which can sum up the entire problem. Imagine this were a regular class based games, lets say it had like 5, classes. Now lets say three of the classess were totaly broken and shit compared to two of them, which were really really.

In that kind of situation, the entire community would be complaining about it, and the developers would be expected to fix it. People who tried to play those three shitty classes would be looked at with pity, not revile, and people would encourage them and assure them that it will get better eventually, not bully them.

Now look at this game. The developers give you essentially hundreds of class combinations, its up to them to ensure they all work, just like its up to them to ensure that the 5 classes in the example before are all balanced.

This is one of the reasons i like strict class based systems, they have hope at being balanced, a system like this, or pure skill based systems, are always going to have horrible balance and be full of assholes.

You may say that part of the game is finding the good combinations, that the bad combinations exist specifically so people who dont know what they are doing fall into them and can be avoided. You are forgetting that this is an mmo. Its supposed to be a virtual world. You are supposed to come up with a character concept, and make it real in the game and that character is supposed to be viable. You are not supposed to make hundreds of builds to try out, you are supposed to transmute your essence into an avatar and coexist within the community as the embodiment of your aesthetics and passions. No build should be bad, and if a build is bad, thats a problem with the game, not with the player.

The problem is that around the turn of the century mmo worlds started becoming static and more about the mechanics themselves, instead of the mechanics simply facilitating the interactions in the world.

The interesting stuff should be events and lore and atmosphere and player interactions, not the way you kill stuff. That should be streamlined and fast paced and addicting with a few powerful, easy to understand, but difficult to master, skill synergies (between classes) to make grinding more enjoyable.

These kind of game are not possible with sharding though. The problem with mmos is mmo players. I want the 99% who were not playing in the late 90s to just go away so i can have my smallish communities of a few thousand managed with direct gm care to make living worlds.

Which is my point, systems like this are what causes this. If you have a strict class based system where there is one choice per standard archetype, nobody is going to bully someone for playing their favored archetype, and if that archetypes represented class sucks, then its not their fault.

Also id like to add, for the game in question, though it only had 4 classes, there was a LOT of class-specific content put into that game. Entire zones designed souly for those classes, and class specific quests were extremely elaborate and tailored for the class, crafting was class specific, and there was a lot of options. Different classes had different solo activities, there was an entire dungeon, a huge old school roguelike style dungeon with like 100 floors, for rogues, other classess could grind in it, but rogues could get past the traps to secret chests and stuff and try to unlock them, that was how some made their money. Priest class still had to pick between different gods, and further everyone picked a god, and needed a corresponding player priest to do some of their daily activities.

Being a specific class entailed a LOT more than just a different kind of combat experience.

kino does cc, raise and gravity pole can not be resisted by anything.

You have to factor in that i hold everything in place, meaning in a group people are free to do all sorts of things while im channeling. If i had gone warlock instead of FF, the damage would have been a little higher in that specific situation with mixed mob types, as spirits would form inside the gravity pole as things started to die, but thats a very specific kind of situation. The point is i can kill anything with safety, and once we get korean bloodbath changes ill be able to heal people as well.

Already duoing places with one other person, i just grab intial agro, bunch everything up, CC it in place, and then heal myself up after, so we have no downtime and they are safe. In the future they will be even safer.

Ive never recommended people go wiz3-kino3 over the memementalist build if potential damage was all they wanetd. kino gives you insane CC on top of steady damage output. When i post videos its to demonstrate the CC more than the damage. Ive yet to encounter a zone i cant safely solo in up to my current level, after i work out the mob patterns.

It's still their fault if an entire archetype sucks. If there's only 2 choices, they could've chosen the right one instead of the wrong one. The only effective way to prevent bullying would be to allow switching on the fly like how first person shooters let you switch classes every time you die.

You can reroll and get back to your old level in a fairly short time. The devs intended for us to play a team of characters, but that fails if people don't enjoy leveling alts. What's going to make them quit are bugs and how repetitive quest leveling is after you've already done it, since those ruin the alt experience.

We've already had plenty of cases of class balance drama where the complaints turned out to be false. If you take that away, they'll have gear drama like gearscore in WoW, or butthurt over whatever else they can find to measure dicks with.

This is forcing people to stop playing their classes and reroll just to play the game. If people would quit over hahamen not doing enough damage, they'd quit over hahamen being outright banned from tons of content. You might as well give swordsmen a rank 7 advancement quest to play an archer or wizard to rank 7.

This combination is certainly bad, my stance is that the fault is the first part, not the second. An mmo should not be about rolling alts, it should be about long term progression of a single character as it interacts within a player driven enviornment.

I can not see any mmo about consuming content be long term successful, its just never happened. Even WoW only keeps going because expansions bring newer content, that people come back to play. You shouldn't really consider those temporary players part of the games actual playerbase.

The only mmos i consider really good are ones that see people play a character for years. The only modern example i can think of is EVE, and its over a decade old now
