I don't do much videogame map work, but what I have done usually only took a couple minutes for not as big as destiny maps to decompile and open up and accept changes and shit.

The books of sorrow are packed with 'em, and they're not just off-handed references, they confirmed the Darkness is at least conceptually the same thing as the villain in Pathways/Marathon (the W'rkncacnter). There other references in the grimoire outside of the BoS as well, like in the Rasputin cards (who seems to be aware of Durandal's existence).

The references are just really blatant as well, that's why I think there may be some real connection lore-wise even if it's just a small thing. I mean, the whole "Eat the Path" thing that Oryx talks about was ripped directly from Marathon, and one of the cards is even named "end of failed timeline" which is what the levels for Infinity were called, as you jumped through timelines until you found one where you had saved the galaxy.
