/ssbg/ - Super Smash Bros. General

I won't say who I am because I don't want the attention.

I care a lot about this community and want to see us alive again, but that clearly isn't going to happen if people keep making these dead shitpost threads during the week.

The best chance of this community getting back on track is to start having a designated time when we all get together to smash, and nothing makes more sense for a start than next weekend and only on weekends, which is when most people will be free and up for playing.

Some of the most fun that I've had in my pathetic life is smashing with people here so I'm not going to give up on this community yet because I still love everyone who plays here but these constant shitpoist threads need to stop for some time if we're going to get anywhere.

I'll see if people here can stop themselves from making constant threads next week and then I can start with my plans at the following weekend if they can.

You can't take them on shield, you can't just wait on the other side of the stage either.
You gotta know your hitbox and find a way to get around them and throw Little Mac off balance.

Macfag actually uses his second jump pretty liberally too, something I don't agree with.
You could probably juggle him around. a bit to get some percent and if you have a move that does good horizontal knockback and send him offstage that could be his death.

You could also just pick a character with good range so you win every trade as long as you aren't at a frame disadvantage and can punish his Smash attacks from a distance.

Remember, punish them AFTER they're over.

I'm trying to get good, but I can never do as much as I want as fast as I want. I'm used to games where the goal is to run your cycle or improv faster than the other person, this feels more like the goal is to throw them off their track or figure out what their next move is (block/grab/attack). Is there any particular character someone like me (or anyone, really) will learn more effectively with? Anywhere I can look up how to get as many inputs through in succession as possible?

For example, I'd try and perfect shield to grab, but always be too slow even though it looked like it worked when everyone else did it. Eventually someone told me to hold down the shield button after perfect shielding (because up until that point I'd though perfect shielding was a different input, where you tap as opposed to hold) then grab out of shield so that I didn't have to worry about the frames you get when lowering it. I also learned that when you run into shield, you shield then release the run rather than the other way around. How would I find info like that? Also, why's turning around and putting in a grab sometimes give me different outputs? If I do it asap I grab, if I wait for the turn-around to end I grab, but there's this space in the middle where putting in a grab gives me an attack instead.

Also, is this actually an okay place to ask for advice?

I'd say you just need to play the game more and ask more questions/look up any inquiries.
There some subtle things to this game you won't find out right away like jumping out of shield or canceling your jumping animation with Smash attacks or Specials to get instant Smash/Special attacks out of shield.

Smash has no proper tutorial, you just have to play and watch the game and learn these things as you go.

As for the character thing, I'd say any character with true combos but those tend to have a high learning curve because of the game's percentage, DI, and rage mechanics making your knockback and trajectory always vary.

Sheik is a good character with good combos that requires a lot of improve as well.
So is Mewtwo, ZSS, Diddy Kong, Ryu.

Pikachu, Fox, Cloud, and Mario don't require a lot of improvisation.
You mostly just do your thing and there's little the opponent can do to stop you because it's almost inevitable you won't get your bread and butter.

It's not a bad place to ask for advice I honestly can't say I even know what I'm talking about right now but you'd probably get more and better replies on reddit before anything here.

Find a character with good basics, and learn the situations in which to utilize them. Good frame data that's not a free and hard punish if you happen to pick the wrong button. Mario, Diddy, Ness, and Yoshi come to mind but play around with a bunch of other characters.

For the shield and grab, you need to know that your "grab" button is a macro of shield and attack. By pressing shield and attack you will get a grab. When you perfect shield something, you cut the shield stun of that attack and no longer have to wait 7 frames after letting go of the shield to preform an attack. So you can do other options besides grab and have them be just as fast, or faster. Now if you hold shield and do not get a perfect shield, you go through the shield stun like normal, and if you let go, you have your 7 frames of lag. This can be mitigated by using an Out of Shield (OoS) option. These are jump, spot dodge, roll, and grab. Jump begins with jump squat frames which can be canceled immediately into an up smash or up special (or some other specials) and after leaving the ground, you can input any aerial attack or special so those are also considered OoS options. Grab is an OoS option because you are already holding the shield button, so pressing the attack button registers as a "shield grab" and the difference in speed of a shield grab and a perfect shield>grab is any shield stun you may have suffered.

For run into shield, you can shield while running, but when you stop running first you go into skid frames that you can not shield during.

Lastly, for a pivot grab, pressing backwards+grab while dashing gets a grab, but if you press grab slightly late, you'll do the turn around skid which you can't grab during, but you can do a forward tilt during it because grab is still attack+shield, you just get the attack. And too late and you get the whole turn around animation first.

I feel like a better way to explain it is that there are certain positions in the game where your options are limited.
For example you can't grab or tilt out of a dashing animation, but turning animations are considered neutral so you can perform your jabs, grabs, tilts etc. while retaining any momentum from the turnaround.

Not likely. Only during a walking turn animation. From a dash, pressing the opposite direction starts a turn around skid. During this skid, you can only jump, forward tilt, and forward smash. During the end of the skid, you can buffer a standing option that for some characters will retain momentum. Notably things like Palutena's up tilt/jab or Greninja's down tilt. Preforming a grab may or may not provide additional range but it is not a pivot grab. You must first go through the majority of your turnaround animation and then you preform a standing grab. A pivot grab is done by pressing backwards and grab simultaneously during a dash. It has no long turnaround animation and has it's own frame data separate to a standing grab.

The connection I made between the two situations was pressing grab after pressing backwards. I mentioned that the grab button is a macro of attack and shield. During the turnaround skid animation, you can not input shield, but you can input attack and would get a forward tilt. Pressing that grab button would ignore the shield part of the macro and input the attack, a forward tilt, which is a common mistake people run into. (Kid Goggles lost a set to Mr. R because he pressed his grab button a few frames after pressing backwards)

Funny how having 2 less frames of i-frames has helped the game a lot. Though rolls are still pretty fast. Technically nearly impossible to react to on heavy lag if you do the math with frames and average human reaction time (15 frames)
