That last tank when the battle of mission 45 is over, is purposely left by Snake so Quiet would grab the launcher from his hand and get shot by the round instead of him, he knew she would because she was loyal and he used that loyalty to his advantage.

I don't think it's impossible, and he clearly had a bit of a soft spot for her. It's not so much about what he might want or how he might feel, but that he can't have it because of who he is. You know, a venomous snake is what ultimately prevents him from bringing Quiet back with him. That symbolism is about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face. It's an old trope, doomed love or whatever. Fate won't let him have that with someone, regardless of whether he might want it or not.
