Something new would be nice. Due to how closely it's already been tied to Rance it'd be difficult to create a brand new series in the same setting without pissing Rance fans off, although it'd be interesting to have some games explore the Continent's history.

Do keep in mind that AS has done plenty of non-Rance stuff to the point where it's only a tiny part of their catalog. There's no real need to milk Rance any more than it already has (and will, judging by that mobage thing they've talked about couple of times). Evenicle could serve as a new starting point for a longer RPG series and although I personally didn't find the protagonist nowhere near as not-completely-bland as some of their other stuff, people really liked it. It's also tailored to have wider appeal than Rance and has a sequel hook in there already.

Technically Quest ties Galzoo into the Continent as well in the same way, but I was referring to any larger series making use of the setting at large like the aforementioned Evenicle does with its own. Some people might take it as a new hero stepping on Rance's turf if there was something set too soon post-Rance.

Evenicle does seem to have a bit wider appeal from what I've seen. There is an actual divide in the japanese community when it comes to Rance due to him being the kind of character he is, where some people say he is the reason they can't stand the games. Miyuri deep down loves Akito more than her husband and wants his children but she can't because she's married to Kazuto. So those conflicting and repressed emotions come out as her wanting to keep both of them around her. What makes it even worse is when Kazuto spills the beans that almost all of the actions that happened to make her fall for Kazuto were in fact actions Akito did but let his brother take credit for because he though Miyuri loved Kazuto and not himself.

Sayoko is lonely, extremely lonely due to the death of her Husband and Akito moving away for so many years. She wants Akito but also sees him as her son, so she's willing to embrace him but is unwilling to take it to the next step despite the level of love being around the same as her husband at the start of the game. She's at the breaking point of loneliness by the time the game is starting and is almost willing to embrace anybody as love as they don't leave her alone.

I'm curious where that comes from. Maria was a main heroine back in II while Shizuka got relatively little screentime. Even in III, IV and VI their shared character plot was relatively heavily about Maria's feelings towards Rance, although Shizuka got some development as well. Writing-wise, I feel like a lot of it seems to have been the devs pushing Maria hard while Shizuka was more of her supporting character until she has been given somewhat hesitantly a bit more of a heroine role in the more 'recent' games (VI and IX). Then again, it might be that the status quo, which is the central point of their interactions, just made me feel that way.

Anyway, I do quite like her voice-acting, and I also like blondes, it simply adds up in some ways.
As for the negative comments, can't say I've seen anything I mind yet. I mean she's supposed to be the Tsukkomi. And I do really think the MC needs someone who has somewhat of a brain. The MC is just instinct pure. (Ramius is as well, though hers more lacking, i.e. she can't sense how strong enemies are) MC+Ramius would just die in some really really stupid way if they'd be left alone. Which is their charm I suppose.

2015 GOTY for me

It's really fun and relaxing and there wasn't a single part of it that felt irrelevant.
Plot isn't complicated and there are no real twists but everything is well done and thematically strong.

Better than Rance 03 and Rance IX not as good as Rance VI

Undertale steals the show for all the casuals, sure, but it wasn't really that much of a great game to be honest, maybe 7/10.

But Pillars of Eternity, Under*rail* and Age of Decadence also came out in 2015. Literally best year for RPGs in the last two decades.

So far (ch2) a 7/10. Gameplay is generally fun, but lacking in depth and oftentimes too fragmented. (a cutscene symbol every 5 steps can be annoying) I suppose it can still get more strategic, but it sure takes its time.
Difficulty is fine, it's a bit on the easy side, but given the lack of strategic options, higher difficulty would only mean grinding. Also gotta love that ctrl speedup.

Storywise, characterinteraction and not serious scenes are generally fine. There are also several rather fun "rpg typical" scenes you can get. ( i.e. running around and fighting dakons) There's a lot of charm here.
The mainstory and serious scenes however aren't so good. The writing is very.. shounen-ish. Including last second "jumping out to save the girl", which doesn't even make sense, given that you trigger the scene by "being there already".
On the other hand, the world seems to be quite fine. (and the overall plot idea is serviceable enough) But the execution, and so far also the antagonists, are.. lackluster.

Overall it's simple fun though. Nothing really special, but if you wanna play somewhat of a retro-rpg again, something with a big worldmap, some things to discover, but without the typical old-school weaknesses (slow, unnecessarily complex menus, obfuscation of abilities and such), then this is really for you. Rpgs like this feel surprisingly rare nowadays.
