Shooting is more than just looking down a scope and pulling a trigger, you have to have one eye open to spot and track the targets, and then you only close it when you're going for the kill

That's why when you see an IMAX movie you have to wear the glasses, the movie is actually playing TWICE and the glasses filter one of the films for each eye. Also, how the Oculus Rift works, but more direct.
However, moving your head will have nearer objects move more than father objects, allowing one eye to pick up cues on how far everything is. This is why birds constantly bob their heads. They don't get overlapping vision fields so they use the movement cues to provide a pseudo-depth perception.
Anyone that gets blinded in one eye has seen the world in its true 3D format, so their brain will easily be able to tell where everything is, near, far, wherever you are

That's strange, Armor Variety has been working just fine for me, even earlier today. I know Anarchy's Children screwed up the invisible leg and arm options and caused a fuckton of clipping as a result, but other than that I haven't had any problems.

I'm genuinely losing my mind over this. One second the game works fine. An hour later I boot it up again and the menus are invisible. No mods have updated in the meantime and launching with mods all ticked off still doesn't work.

I'm verifying file integrity now. Fingers crossed, lads.

Science Black Man is by far a better character than anyone else in the first game, and actually manages to act dignified and like a goddamn scientist unlike Dr. "I'll just randomy tap on my iPad and hope no one starts wondering why the hell I don't know what an antenna is" Vahlen.

You what? The T3 Shredder Cannon can rip through a pack of enemies, destroy their cover AND strip them of most of their armor, and it's not even the best one. A very vague "Doom is coming" narrative that the new games want to push. Presumably the Ethereals are on the run from something that either created them [as hinted by the first game] or is hunting them [as hinted by XCOM 2], and which is apparently currently sleeping under the Earth's seabed, similarly to Terror from the Deep.

I personally hope XCOM in the future goes full Lovecraft and reveal that the aliens are like the Mi-Go running the hell away from hungry cosmic entities and that Cthulhu is literally a character.

That is basically what Terror from the Deep was, and what Enemy from the Deep will be [I'm calling the name in advance].
The only problem is the fact that it would exarcerbate a problem that normal XCOM already suffers from, how the hell an underfunded and understaffed organization can pose effective resistance against an alien force that has no shortage of material, personnel, and logistics. The first game handwaves it by making it all a big secret test, the second by making the entire ayylium infrastructure dependant on the Elders' continued existence. But that's already stretching it, and you'd need to up the ante severely to have a half dozen guys succesfully gun down Azathoth/Cthulhu/what have you and have it not be just outrageously immersion-breaking.

If Enemy from the Deep DOES keep up with the first two games' implications that whatever is laying beneath the oceans is bad enough to have Ethereals shaking in terror, it'd require quite a substantial technology jump though. The armor in XCOM 2 is leagues better than XCOM EU. I greatly prefer it. The amount of customization they put into it in the base game alone is simply marvelous. The gene mods in EW always giving you a sleeveless douche always pissed me off.

That out of the way, the fact that there are so many exposed necks in XCOM 2 is a weird sight, yeah. At least we do have mods to clear that up. It's the reason I like the tac mask and other lower props so much.

There are multiple timelines.
XCOM 2's timeline begins when the organization collapses almost instantly before alien attacks, without even having had the time to figure out the properties of meld. The Volunteer is not at all mentioned. But the other timeline, where XCOM wins, is ALSO canon, because the Uber Ethereal manifests itself in the game and urges you to kill Angelis and her council.

I suspect some manner of time-fuckery is involved. Maybe one of the expansions will reveal that aliens have access to rudimentary time travel, but that it's such a dangerous piece of tech that not even the Ethereals themselves are entirely in agreement over wether or not using it is something they should do. Thus the schism in their ranks.

You'd break that one long bar up into regions, attack abilities, consumables/utility abilities.

I prefer Alien Swarm's controls. Or any other number of top-down PC titles using keyboard and mouse.

The Helldivers swing in their movement. It is to create inpercision in your actions so there's more chance of Friendly Fire. Throwing a Grenade brings your cursor back to your character and you have to pull it back out again. A perfectly fine activity with an analog stick but with a mouse it is just frustrating.

While sprinting you can travel north or south simply by tapping left and right repeatedly.

This is the first attempt, and i've reloaded a few times even on successful missions to try new strats. I settled on Sniper because of the ability to cheese with extreme firepower. You'll have to skip terror missions until you get to archangel armor, though, because lids will rape you in the not fun way. And Rapid Recovery is a must. You want pods patrolling into you; if you blue move activate, you need to be able to yellow move to a safe place out of alien LOS. Never advance into a map too far unless you've killed a pod or two, because 6 v 1 situations are godawful. Mutons are a bitch and a half even on normal because you won't get plasma for a while, so Headshot and flanking is an invaluable tool

Will do. Currently am experimenting with swapping the scope for a Drone Capture arc thrower to use drones like tiny grenades. The only problem is that drones tend to only appear in close proximity to cyberdiscs, which means they're essentially mandatory kills. A healing cyberdisc is a very bad thing, especially because they hardly ever open so they are functionally immune to crits

I find Helldivers' controls to be much better than the usual "drag your mouse fucking everywhere" that twin stick shooters have, like AS. Your crosshair is always in front of you, at a fixed distance, so all you need to do is to learn to turn before fine tuning your aim. Right. I'm not praising Alien Swarm's other attributes here just using it as an easy reference for controls that are fairly common.

However it's not like Helldivers is all that deep either. Both games suffer from lack of maps and content. Alien Swarm had indoor and outdoor environments - that were entirely contained in one damn short campaign. Helldivers only had outdoor environments procedurally populated with canned objective points.

I will just not agree with you on the controls. Yes you could get used to them but you were always fighting them. There was nothing intuitive to the system - and that was by design. Magicka devs get hired out to make these games for the "lol friendly fire" gameplay.

Your claim to swinging the cursor all over the screen boggles me, but that's your call. You want to be constantly paying attention to your character's shoulders and alignment to know if they're going to shoot in the direction you've got your cursor aimed, fine that's your thing.

Play on whatever difficulty you want. There are some basic strategies and methods you should be mindful of. The big one, right from the start, is how you move your soldiers on the map.

Assuming you are not in concealment the only person who ever causes a pod of aliens or group of ADVENT to "pop" is the very first soldier you move. And that soldier should still have his/her second move, or gold move, to help improve their situation after the aliens have shifted into a combat stance against you.

That should leave the rest of your team available to take up positions against the ayys.

Sectoids: Kill an ADVENT soldier near a sectoid. This effectively crowd controls the dumb alien as they'll spend a turn making a zombie almost every time. You should hopefully then be in a position next turn to flank and murder the pectoid. Killing the pectoid makes the zombie go away.

High Ground is your friend when attacking.

High Ground can be a real rectal fucker.

If your roof gets blown up and you fall you take fall damage. Keep this in mind against ADVENT as it is a great way to do stupid amounts of damage with just one grenade.

You get bonuses to aim from behing higher than your opponent.

Half cover sucks.

Smoke Bombs no longer suck and last for three enemy turns.

Flash Bangs are more important early game than a medi-kit. Avoid Flashbanging Sectoids unless they have someone Mind Controlled.

Keep your people together as much as you can. This gives you the best chance to respond to activating a group of aliens.

On that matter, it's said that each Ethereal is born in a specific world to become the Avatar of that species, correct?
Shamash was the Avatar of the Zudjari and got enslaved, and Asaru the newly-born (relatively speaking) Avatar of Humanity. So the Ethereals who Ascend get seeded in a specific planet to guide a species.


So could it be the Ethereals are supposed to be a caretaker species and this Council we face rebelled against their own condition? Could that be why their bodies are atrophying? Because they aren't meant to support so much psionic energy for so long?

Download the mod that lets you choose AWC perks - it's kinda cheaty, but gene mods let you pick your cheaty shit before so it isn't all that bad.

My run and gun serial sniper with death from above is a rape train without breaks.

Same with my double Volatile Mix grenadier - 4 damage flashbangs for a start. If i get the right Advent pods I can take the whole lot out with a single grenade using salvo and carry right the fuck on with my turn.

Also, Untouchable on an Ever Vigilant/Gaurdian spec Overwatch Specialist = Invincible soldier. Bastard never. EVER takes a hit. Hot Damn.

I haven't tried A Better ADVENT. Wasn't aware it stacked with Improved AI.

I turned Improved AI off a week or so ago. I used True Concealment like they suggested but on a mid-game "defend this object that we're rapidly wrecking" it obviously didn't matter. All their clever movements, even when you're concealed, and every firefight they're staying 10+ tiles back.

I might've dismissed it too hotly in the moment. All this has been about testing mods for me and trying to concoct some new balance to play under instead of vanilla.

I was going to try Activate All Pods next. Does that ruin story missions? Specially the last one...

Or that a Sectoid's Psi rating is so high a mindspin will almost be guaranteed on Squaddies?

Or how annoying it is when Troopers are actually smart and can use their new shotguns and extra armor and overwatch bonuses (each is a special subclass) to the fullest extend?


These two really are the only mods I consider "essential". Trust me when I say you actually have to think when playing your missions. Combine it with 6 starting squad and IESS and you'll have a blast.


Activate All Pods is cool but it's obvious the game did not meant for that. If you want to install that mod you're going to have to plan your entire campaign and other mods alongside it, plus install one or two custom classes mandatorily (the Field Medic comes to mind, and so does the Rogue). If AAP is the only mod you have installed, some missions become literally impossible.

Increased Enemy Squad Size. If you install the Plus version you can get Long War style pods too, they become much more varied.

I'd also recommend More Dark Events mod, the "Casual" version (The normal version is pretty much concentrated MAGNIFICENCE and not actually playable by any stretch of the word). It injects a lot of potential danger into your missions.

When you get an absolutely atrocious roll and are forced to choose between a 3-4 Berserker pod (worsened by IESS), most ADVENT forces with Tracer/Venom/Dragonbreath rounds, or a Major Breakthrough on the Avatar Project, trust me that you'll learn to appreciate pain in a way only an OG XCOM player can

Gene mods weren't balanced around shit in EW, MECs weren't really either, they were added in as cool as shit DLC stuff but they totally changed the dynamic of the game.

The main issue admittedly was the meme skin, which is like xcom 2 concealment or LW concealment scouts, except it was infinitely reusable and could be applied to the entire fucking squad and also concealed you as you were moving, not just in cover.

I wanted 6-8 squad sizes but I knew that'd make the game even easier. So then you pick up an AI mod or two, bunch of custom enemy units. Less reliable grenade damage, shotguns and rifles can be used by everyone, Fatigue, more soldiers at the start of the game, scientists in the AWC, more engineers in the proving grounds, the ability to craft weapon mods, +1 soldiers to each pod/group you face...

And I'm forgetting stuff.

Many of the limits that are placed on the AI for lower levels are removed and the AI is given additional weights to certain actions that are more tactically sound.
Things like preferred engagement range, flanking, and down-throttling of patrols are expanded to be more punishing.


One of the aspects I don't like about the aliens is that they don't really suffer or benefit from accuracy fall-off for ranges, and would prefer if that was something that applied to both sides. Right now, it's mitigated by the fact that the AI prefers to be within 10 units of the enemy, but the improved AI's are often setting that to 14. Why this matters is because 12 is the typical normal accuracy for rookies and 10 is the typical point where you can start to consider flanks.

People like playing with the larger squad sizes and that's completely necessary to deal with the improved AI and other additions to make the game more like Long War. But I just like the challenge of having smaller groups but more universally applied rules.

It's not the same chance, grenades do guaranteed damage. If your way fails you can get 3 or 4 enemies shooting at you from cover, my way kills them most of the time and forces any survivors to move to new cover which is when overwatch is used most effectively.

I have plenty of helmets, tac masks, goggles, etc. Base game comes with a bunch of options for tacticool kevlar, I have a mod that gives some alternate versions where the secondary color changes the rigging color (instead of it just being camo'd as well), MGS5 BDUs, Capnbubs stuff, etc.

It really isn't hard to find enough tacticool shit to operate unless you want literally every soldier in your roster to be wearing a different hat or whatever, which I think might be missing the point of looking Operator to begin with.

But it could be useful. The main problem is that it's armor and while armor is nice, enemies can shred it and that's much more troubling for you than it is for them, because they have tons of units while if you get shredded your perk is basically wasted for that mission after that engagement.

And the things that can shred you tend to be the things that have armor themselves, which means if you'd picked Shredder, you wouldn't have got your ass shredded because they'd not have gotten a turn.

Even on legendary the game snowballs so hard at lategame that the only way to be at risk of losing someone is to activate a shitload of pods at once, or be standing in the open vs. a lot of shots. Warden provides more than enough HP to eat a shot or two through cover.

Playing on Commander without the hidden bonus.

I can shoot aliens alright but i'm pretty sloppy outside firefights. I miss click and forget about the waypoint feature a lot, i tell myself "ok, lets move up but stay away from the windows, don't wanna get spotted by a cheeky civ or a pod clustered next to the wall" only to run next to the window anyways.

It's the reason why i don't do ironmeme.

I meant leaving myself open as in, not dealing with the Codex before it had a chance to do that. I'd much prefer it if the Codex teleported to a vantage point and took a potshot instead of flanking my soldier, thereby also setting up a flank on itself, and then waggling its glowy ass for me to shoot.

Between stuff like that, constant sectoid zombie-raising, and officers running for cover and then marking even though they're alone, it just gets jarring.
