A good IG hunt will take about half as much time as a good GL hunt, and will also be significantly easier. Meanwhile, in 3U, you can use any weapon without feeling like you're gimping yourself, besides maybe underwater SnS.

for skills i'd suggest evade extender, shot type up, and recoil down (for pierce shots) as most important. after that just try to throw on offensive skills or possibly evasion if you need it.

as for knowing what shot to use, you'll want to look at the size of the monster and the hitzones. on something like rathalos who has his head exposed you can effectively use normal shots, but he's also long enough that you should be able to get all your hits off pierce lvl 2 is aimed across wings or straight down his body. on a yian garuga, you have a much smaller target, so normal shots take priority. gravios on the other hand is a giant sponge, so you just let it rip with pierce shots. pellet shots are totally underwhelming this time around.

i'm a bow main who rarely uses the hbg, so i can't be of much more help unfortunately.

Normal shot 2 is used to maximize damage on a specific damage zone. It has a MV of .12, with a x1.1 modifier from Normal Up, and x1.1 from Felyne Sharpshooter. Additionally a x1.5 modifier from crit distance and is weapon class dependant (meaning that you use its shown value for calculations). Best is Tigrex>MT.grex HBG, Seregios LBG
Normal 3 is similar to Normal 2, though it may bounce up to 4 times, so it is great on certain monster, but awful on others since it has lower MV than normal 2 (0.10). Best is Ukanlos HBG, not really worth using on LBG.
Pierce 2 and 3 are basically are fucking devastating shot types. 3 has a damned motion value of .08 up to 5 times, meaning that it can do some real damage to big monsters. Best are Destiny, Gravios (for crouch) and Trembling lordship (for 2). It doesn't have the x1.1 modifier from Felyne skills, though it is still great. Again not worth using on LBGs.
Pellet is generally not worth using. It is rather unpredictable, it has a great armor skill (x1.3 modifier), though it lacks of the distance modifier (x1.5) and it seriously spreads damage through damage zones. Also disruptive as fuck, your team mates will hate you.
For LBGs abuse RF element shots, explosive shots and status shots.

This should help you understand Recoil and Reload speeds.

As for bows.
Pierce which rocks on HBG and sucks on LBG is extremely regular for bow. A lvl 3-5 Pierce arrow is just slightly stronger than the alternatives but spreads damage between damage zones so much that it falls last on the DPS spectrum. It has the best (as in farthest) range though.
Rapid has the lowest MV values but it golden to focus its damage to an specific damage zone. It has an average critical range so it the general use arrow by default. Doesn't get a bonus from Felyne Sharp Shooter but felyne temper (1.05) is usable.
Spread has far the strongest MV and is the best overall for raw and elemental damage. That stuff has the best damage skill in the game (spread up is a damned 30% increase for a mere 10 points), though its range is laughable and it has moderate spread on its arrows (passable but may be a bit tricky with smaller monsters).
Special move wise.
Power shot is godly, though don't use it recklessly or you will get yourself killed.
Arc shots are so so damage and utility wise, so use them only if you have to.

You don't need to make an armor set for the enviroments, just bring roughly 3 cooldrinks or 3 hotdrinks because usually supply boxes give you 2 for free. Aim weapons are only good when somebody knows how to use them, I would recommend looking up some speedruns to see those weapons in action so you get an idea of how to use them.

I wouldn't worry too much about reaching full gauge with LS if you keep an eye out for openings and take advantage of them it will fill up pretty fast. What weapons are fun depends on who is playing the game. Lance appeals more to people who enjoy guarding and countering and GS is for people who enjoy putting out huge amounts of damage at a slow place. Hammer is mainly used for KO which is when if you hit a monster on the head enough times it will knock it out and give you some time to wail on it. There are certain recommended weapon paths for each weapon and I would recommend looking that up because I don't have that much experience with MHFU.

Mixed sets are about the only option for gunners, really.
For bow general use full sets are Star K and Kushala.
For HBG it is B.Blos and Rusted Kushala, though you are far better of using some mixed set with Eva EX, depending on your main shot type and your weapon Pierce Up+Recoil/deviation down (if neccesary, check your weapon and the tables)+atk increasing skills or normal up+deviation down (if necessary)+atk increasing skils. Out of boredom I made a quick set for Ukanlos skyblaster with Challenger +2, Normal Up, Eva ex, deviation down and some other offensive skill I can't remember.
As for LBG Ace gunner with a torso up pants is pretty good as far as general use goes. it comes with RF, Fleet Feet and enough room to chip element +3 and Combo Plus.
Best elemental LBGs are Azure for fire, Eldaora for Ice, Plesioth for Water and Zinogre for Thunder.

it's literally an experiment of a game that they managed to be able to afford in between 4U and 5 due to 4U being to top selling MH title. Someone at capcom likely associated this to the mechanical gameplay changes in 4U and sent out the fishing line that is X to see if drastic gameplay changes are where the series needed to go to bring in more cash. Assuming very few of the movesets are different, visual quality about the same, and rehashing 2nd gen maps, i'm sure it was relatively cheap to do so aside from the new styles gameplay.

This series preys on the people that are too impatient to wait for the definitive [xth gen]U games.

I just got MHP3rd but have some questions. Are arena quest still in? I'm not sure where to find them. I downloaded the DLC translated but I don't know how to play the arena DLC. Also regarding the DLC, does anyone have a link to ALL the DLC translated? The download I found was missing a few of the quests and pretty much all of the guild card/felyne/granny DLC.

Sanic the Brachidyhue is a pain to melee, but ranged weapons are ass at breaking his fists.

I've already played MHX on my 3DS via Cakes.
I have to be honest that I didn't play it that much (like 30h). But I don't really feel like playing it and everytime I do, I don't have any fun. Not in the slightest.
All styles are trash bar Guild. Striker can be okay on some weapons (e.g. Hammer or SWaxe) but Aerial is a shitty gimmick, making mounts less rewarding than they already were.
I have to say though. I liked the flashiness in the trailers but not being able to turn it off or at least tone it down is really annoying. The option to reduce the effects doesn't change the flashiness. Only the blood.

The game is still highly playable, so no it's not serious. Also they did bring back disabling AA, and it's actually implemented right to make a difference.

FU while it has loads of content, it's dated, unpolished, clunky and hard for the wrong reasons.

3rd may have less content but it's more polished and acceptable under current standards, looks and plays better and has appropiate hitboxes. A refined game =/= easier.

My advice: go with 3rd. You won't miss the Yama Tsukami anyways.
