The use of Spanish Sahara was really good. Even though I think it would have been a fine song for the other ending, as Sbel's extended ending demonstrates.
But reusing Obstacles was an absolute dick move. Not only is it recycling music previously used which can create the impression that the ending it rushed/ not-intended to be chosen. It's replacing the positive context the song was originally used with (The end of Ep 1) and not making people associate it with the shit-heap that was Ep 5.

That's fair. It is a borrowed style. It kinda works thematically for her since Chloe is pushing her into being a different, more confident person; like she's 'faking it till she makes it'. It's interesting when Max finally acquires her own style in Episode 5 at the gallery and she seems less cute and innocent (I suppose that's the point). She still looks good, tho.

Althought: The native american vibe of her gallery outfit kinda makes me wish the NA symbolism was explored more throughout the game.

The 'On The Road - Ending' combined with Obstacles was something a lot of people predicted. It would have been fine, if the context hadn't been artificially miserable and the rest of the episode hadn't been a shitheap.
Max and Chloe getting to drive off into the sunset together to a song with existing significance could have been really nice. They could have even used the credits theme in its place, and it would have had the same (or even greater) emotional effect, if they ran out of music licensing budget.

Her style is still somewhat similar to her non-style of undershirt with a hoodie on top just with a nice jacket instead of a hoodie but it does looks distinctively different still.
This might just be grasping at straws but her hoodie might somewhat symbolize her youth/innocence. I make this claim based on how Jefferson takes off her hoodie when he does his thing and how she changes it for something more 'mature' when at the art gallery. But I don't know, just throwing it out there.

For the gallery it's supposed to be a nice event so she dressed up.
But I get the feeling that she dresses in the hoody and stuff because it's all she knows. It's whatever her parents bought her and she just wears it without thought. Nothing wrong with that (I'm a guy and dress like that pretty regularly because it's quick and comfy), but she should get the chance to express herself. She is an artist, afterall. Which is what Chloe was getting her to do; stop being so worried over the tiniest things and just live life. Try new things and see if you like them, you never know. There was one where Max was drunk, and she seemed proud in the photo. If they were concept art then I'm glad we didn't stay in the timeline long. It didn't seem like a good place for a majority of the characters.

I agree of course: she will probably want to dress more maturely in the future, like in the gallery - but I wouldn't necessarily say her "style" changes dramatically; the gallery outfit is a pretty natural progression from her usual stuff, for the most part (the boots are a bit surprising, but otherwise it's a similar layout with more muted and better coordinated colors).
I mean, it's not like she never found a style and would now completely have to (re-)invent herself. She did like those clothes and despite the growth she is still that person too. She will probably find more elegant ways to make her deer shirts work though. And get rid of the shoes. The shoes are truly tacky. Like, "what the fuck?"-levels tacky.

It's been said in the past that Max's gallery outfit is a mix of her own style, Chloe's (the boots), and Rachel (the necklace with the dream catcher).
I think saying Max doesn't have a style is taking it too far (She's the only person to dress that way that we see), as you said. It's more that she has a style but is afraid to leave that comfort zone, but as she matures she tries new things or ways to do them. So it's more evolving and adding to her style than building it from scratch.

That still baffles me. They've found a niche they're (somewhat) good at and they decide to switch back to an action game after their last one rendered them bankrupt. They supposedly have two teams, one working on narrative-heavy games and the other on more action-based. Supposedly. Is it even going to be worth it without the characters we like? Can Dontnod create a new cast that's just as identifiable, original, and memorable without making it feel like they just changed names? It's funny that both endings return to a previous lovely moment of the series only to slap you in the face with how badly it's drifted. Bay ending returns to the bathroom, only to demonstrate that the engaging atmosphere of intimate high school drama has been completely absent the entire episode. Bae ending returns to Obstacles, the song that introduced all the mysterious intrigue surrounding the town and everyone in it, in a context where the town and the mystery and the town and everyone in it don't matter at all anymore.

I figured as much just by the little bit of info we got like the texts from Victoria and the fact she was actually hanging out with Nathan. But I thought when I saw the pictures that we were going to get actual confirmation in the game. She was in the Vortex Club, but I wouldn't say she was your typical "Vortex Club slut". She stayed in contact with Chloe (even wrote her on pirate paper), her relationship with Nathan and Victoria seems pretty tame, she has only been at Blackwell for a month and a bit and so it's not like she could have become some established party persona. In fact, Courtney is still skeptical of having Max in the club at all. She still doesn't want to be called Maxine, is still supportive of Taylor, obviousy still into photography. You could even go into more ridiculous things like make-up, haircut, journal, phone, etc. - Max retains much of her original personality, she's just in with a different crowd, probably because she's less shy - something she becomes in the original timeline as well.

I think I most definitely would give a fuck even if I hadn't played it episodically. And I mean, tons of new people do play it non-episodically and get obsessed too. The obsession throughout had more to do with the "mystery" and for that part I agree the game would have done way worse if released in one piece and wouldn't have attracted the sci-fi and "theory-crafting" crowd as much. The episodic format here was kind of a cheat, especially because they failed to keep to a schedule on top of that, but it still would have been a game that stood out to me even without that format.

The classroom part was fine. It was a neat bit of surreal horror and being forced to respond lovingly towards Jefferson was one of Dontnod's few moments of cruelty that was actually brilliant. That they then didn't have Rachel in there or even at least brought back more of the themes and imagery we have had throughout the game just kills it for me. It got boring pretty fast that way.

Having Rachel appear - or at least Max's image (or many images) of Rachel - would have been a really good way to actually sell, eg, the dark room segment of Max seeing different sides to the people she knows and feeling insecure about her place among them. Would have given Rachel a bit more purpose as a character, being the social chameleon who everyone loved but no one really knew, personifying that feeling of never really knowing someone or being certain of how they feel about you - being blindsided that Jefferson was a creep, being scared that Chloe doesn't love you back, being unsure about Warren's intentions. You can never know someone with complete certainty, and no one will ever know you with complete certainty, so you have to learn to move forward on faith without letting fear hold you back or letting others' judgements hurt you too much.

The nightmare is certainly supposed to be all about Max and her growth, the lessons she's learned, overcoming insecurities and all that. And while I had hoped it to be more about the supernatural stuff, be supernatural itself, that's fair enough seeing as how the game was always about the characters and not so much the mystery. But as you rightly say the nightmare doesn't even really sell that all too well. It wouldn't even need Rachel for that; seeing ourselves from another perspective could have been great all by itself. From the doe's perspective for example - which is unaffected by our time power and could have shown Max who she is, what of her remains through these timelines. Or just what they already had in there: Chloe's voice coming through to us, driving home the idea that Max shouldn't lose herself in her internal fears but face reality. No idea why they cut that.

As it is it just seems like an endless shitfling with that confused "Other-Max" conversation on top, which Max then breaks out of and is just like "that was so terrible!" when it should have been a liberating experience...

I like the idea overall, but just for sake of discussion, two points about this:

1) The endings are "everything is basically fine" or "the town is destroyed". It's probably hard to keep it vague if you need to mention the town at all ... mention of a hugely destructive event (or lack thereof) would give it away. Unless you set it outside of Arcadia Bay and just never mention the town ... but that might ruin the point of the story you're suggesting.

2) It doesn't matter either way, because both endings occur in Season 1. It's not that both endings COULD occur - it's that both endings DO occur. In the very first run through the bathroom, Nathan shoots Chloe, so the storm doesn't occur in that timeline. And at the end of the game, even if Max focuses back to the bathroom, the Bae ending timeline still continues with an autopilot Max (we know from Eps 4/5 that alternate timelines continue on just fine when "our" Max's consciousness jumps out). So the developers could just pick which timeline they want to run with, and go from there.

I think they've made it fairly clear that if they do make a Season 2 (and from all accounts, there's no reason to assume they won't), it won't have anything to do with Season 1. They keep mentioning various anthology series that they have in mind, so it's unlikely Season 2 would contain any of the same characters, settings, powers (probably?), etc. Just a similar tone/atmosphere/style.

But there's still plenty of time for them to change their minds. And, hell, maybe Square Enix will force them to work on something more direct-sequelish rather than going completely off on some tangent?

Multiple people at dontnod have made comments about wanting to do another season again and again, they already said they were throwing ideas around months back, lately they have been stressing the idea that they have two teams at their studio, only one of which working on Vampyr. Plus all the franchising they have been doing? It could still end up Square denying them, but I can't see that being the determining factor. LiS from the beginning was never meant to get this big, Square did pick it up without putting any financial or editorial pressure on dontnod, the game was a success beyond expectations and everyone involved seems more than happy to make more of the same thing... I agree, though I think the natural assumption is that the alternate timelines persist. Otherwise the persistent timekeeping between the various timelines is a bit convenient. They set them up in a very "life goes on" kinda way, stuff happens in them even when "our" Max is busy elsewhere.

Plus I'd argue that the game basically implies this to be the case with other-Max's "one of the many Max's you've left behind" line. We know that this is just a manifestation inside Max's head, so it could just be an unreliable narrator, but I think, at the very least, it lets us know how the developers were thinking about the alternate timelines.

Basically, from all accounts, they want to make more, and the game was an overwhelming success. It's pretty much a given that there'll be more LIS games, even if we assume that particular quote from that interview was just a mistranslation/slip.

They certainly were having money issues following Remember Me, but I thought this just meant that they had to alter their development plans going forward (hence why they went for the episodic LIS concept rather than straight to another full-release game).

The thing about Vampyr is that they must have started working on the concept before LIS really took off, probably before Ep1 was even released. The original concept video was posted in mid June (~a month after Ep3), and they already had a publisher at this stage. I can't imagine that these developer/publisher negotiations happen very quickly. They must have had some idea that they were going to have their second team working on something months before this video was released.

So I assume Dontnod was already gearing up the initial stages of development for Vampyr before LIS became a hit. And it's being made by their second team (though it's not entirely clear how the teams are broken up ... I assume there is a fair amount of overlap/reshuffling between games?), so it's fair to assume this isn't some indication that they're not making a sequel ... merely that the structure of their company means staggering development cycles between different projects.

Yeah I agree, I just always took that as restructuring of realities rather than jumping, but it's anyone's guess.

The devs definitely meant to allude to multiple timelines with that for one reason or another, but I don't buy into that, mostly because there is no confirmation and I just don't particularly like the idea. As you say this is just a figment of Max's dreaming mind and can then just as well be interpreted to represent "the decisions you would have had to live with but don't because you escaped them using your powers". I. e. they still are "versions" of Max that she "left behind", but not behind in another reality - behind in her conscious, in as much as she cleared her mind of all the stuff the chose to rewind, when maybe she should confront herself with that shit even when it isn't "real". But yeah, I just don't like multiverses in popular fiction, but if it allows for them to give us a second season that more closely ties into the first, I'll gladly eat that up.

They say it's broken into action-based and narration-heavy games, so I would assume there's a reasonably clear staff divide to go with that, but then they are a pretty young studio. Michel worked on both Remember Me (action) and LiS (narration), and their two main directors both worked on LiS together. Plus those titles weren't developed simultaneously, so they must have started splitting up after they had already begun on Vampyr and got LiS - as one of their many proposed games - accepted by Square. The splitting must have been a deliberate effort though, since they were actively proposing games while presumably working on Vampyr. So the obvious question is what is the team that worked on LiS working on now if not a second season.

Different game styles, but I assume there is room for a massive amount of crossover between the teams. Especially when it comes to developing the game's art assets, animation, sound, etc. Vampyr is on the same engine as LIS too, so the software guys and level creation team are probably just as capable at contributing as anyone else.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "teams" were more of a fluid "Theseus' ship" type situation, with various permanent staff members moving between projects at different stages where required. I imagine a lot of the LIS team shuffled onto Vampyr, at least temporarily, following Ep5. Especially if they're permanent staff members (though I think lots of game developers work on contract?), they're not just going to be sitting on their hands waiting for their "team" to sell an idea for a new game.

I think it was designed to be neutral, to allow the player to project their existing feelings onto. I know that some people see the Pricefield museum to be Max 'saying goodbye' to Chloe, losing each moment one by one on her way to undo the week they shared together. Whereas obviously for others it reaffirms their love for each other and it being worth it to keep Chloe alive.

Even if Vampyr flops hard, I would think they have money already set aside for development of S2.
And if there's two different teams the LiS team may work on Vampyr at the start to get things rolling and then go back to their own project.
