Hoestly, I find most of the fractals pretty enjoyable for at least 8 rounds.

The thing that makes them annoying is the instbilities, once you get to the higher ones the game slaps these dumb handicaps on you called instabilities.
They range from alright ones (enemies inexplicably explode when they die, or one that spreads conditions if you stack in a corner) to ones that just make the levels unplayable, especially as certain professions (enemies give you random conditions all the time without any consistency, you can get feared off a cliff or suddenly have 12 stacks of burn on you and there's little you can do about it).

They're not fun handicaps for the most part, they're bullshit and just force you to play the game tediously.

Anet nerfed warrior, so now necros and mesmers are out of control, not even mentioning how broke dragon hunter is with its un dodgable skill 5 that snares and stuns. I'm newly level 80 but I don't think I do a great deal of damage, I use a rifle and am an engineer. I guess the rifle is a weak weapon?

Rifle alone is not good damage. Engineer doesn't really camp anything aside from maybe grenades, it's about rotating through your kits and blowing all your high damage, high CD skills and chaining fields and finishers to buff yourself and do more damage that way. If you're going to auto at least throw grenades at things.

And solo you basically only have open world stuff like SW, Drytop, the HoT map metas, etc.

So what is the fastest way to get elite specialization outside of PvP? I've done most hero points in Verdant Brink but have no idea how to get to the next areas without story progression (unless you need to do the story to get to them?)

I haven't 100%'d the map yet but I don't know if it's worth it just for the hero points. What would be the ideal way of maxing out an elite fast? Seeing the last skills cost 100+ points each puts me off so bad.
