How's this for a building style? Going full above-ground town, save for a quarry/mine and occasional basements. The stone is diorite and the wood is willow, both blocks. I'm planning to make it pretty dense with the buildings, with three-tile-wide paved roads, probably also diorite blocks, and a wall to cap it all off once I'm done. Any suggestions?

Maybe. Adobe buildings are a thing, and clay slat roofs as well. Also most bricks used for residential construction irl are made from clay (in the US at least). It could make a nice aesthetic theme for your city, or even just a sector of it. Perhaps stone blocks for structural elements (corners, pillars, doorways, etc) and clay bricks for walls and/or roofs? Just a thought. Keep in mind that anything you would use wood for you could use clay for instead; it will just cost 3 extra jobs to turn a log into a brick. 1 to gather the clay, 1 to turn the wood into charcoal, and 1 to turn the charcoal into a clay block. There's no mechanical benefit to doing so, it would just be an aesthetic thing. Unless you have fire clay, whose products are more valuable than wood.

Whenever I build above ground, I build massive supports to everything.

>channel a huge rectangle 1 z down
>fill the whole damn thing with stone walls
>construct building onto that

Downside is you have to dig small service tunnels to finish the support but you can cover them with hatch covers and call them storm cellars.
Upside is your dwarves have 1z of stone beneath their feet, also you get rid of excess stones.

Not even close. Everyone knows that Tolkien dorfs are based on ancient jews, and the dwarves in DF share the chief characteristics of those dwarves.

The TES dwemer, who also seem to have made a source of inspiratio, are obviously based on Assyrians, which come pretty close to ancient Israelites.

The monumental architecture and masonry associated with dwarves also speaks against the nordic dorf theory.

>Soap.

Soap is the only item dwarves will use to sterilize a wound. While dwarves are of course aware that humans will pour perfectly quaffable alcohol over their bloody wounds and onto the filthy ground to get the same effect, dwarves understand that some things are more precious than a single life, and face oblivion with a bit more dignity. Application of extreme heat is also well known to prevent infections and seal a wound, but dwarves consider magma the only legitimate heat source, and the non-lethal application of magma a sacrilege.

Is there a particular reason the only visitors my fort get are animal people or is this just random chance?
>>
>>135489561

If there is a single cheese maker coming I slaughter the entire wave of migrants
>>
>>135489561
The amount of wild animal people is controlled by the level of "savagery" in a given region. Idon't know exactly what triggers animal person populations to settle in civilisations, but it might have to do with how tolerant those civilisations are towards other races and cultures.

Human civs have randomised values, so it MIGHT be that you got an exceptionally tolerant human civ, with an exceptionally large animal person population.

You shouldn't be able to, but there is a way to access their screens even after they're dead. You just have to find one of their acquaintances, and find the deceased dwarf through the relationship screen. From there, you can view their personal details like when they were still alive.

There kind of are. Every syndrome producing fb's syndrome is randomly generated. I don't know if euphoria is a possible effect, but dizziness, numbness, nausea, and narcolepsy are all possible. It's the second time my dwarves make an artifact depicting THIS elf in a positive/neutral manner, what the fuck is wrong with them?
>>
>war hammer
>ha ha, nope, enjoy your 3 ton wheelbarrow

So I read that Cado's magical journey story and a lot of the shit in there is possible with dfhack and mods. Launch can replicate a lot of the telekinesis effects, and abuse of hyperspeed is indeed devastating.

I don't have a thing where I can point and say "die" but I can spit and set people on fire.

Also have an idea what that "force your fist through the future" thing is like from the onepunch script I put together to crank an attack velocity waaaaaaay up, bodies flying to the edge of the screen and dying in mid-air type stuff.

Being able to "mine" open a wall with magic instead of advfort.

Being able to heal others with some syndrome getting more pronounced side-effects on yourself is basically possible now (jack up their recuperation, give yourself something using the concentration effects, though the bark/branches might be tricky to do) with some clever interactions.

Having something like the tracking interface with different colors/different symbols for magical energy flows/ley lines would be neat too.

Your fort is probably in the region that the elf journeyed in. So there will be a bunch of historical events related to it. When your dwarves start engraving they'll probably cover your fort with images of that elf.
I had a fort in 40.24 that ended up being practically a shrine to a battle between a marksdwarf and a yeti. Easily 1/3rd of all the hundreds of images and statues in the fort were about their battle. It was the only thing that had ever happened in the region I embarked on before I got there, and they kept obsessively commemorating it even after I made plenty of more interesting history for them to depict.

why is my military training even when the schedule is deactivated?
>>
>>135536119
Militia with nothing better to do will sometimes choose to train in their free time. Sometimes they will even when they do have something better to do. If they have dutiful personality traits or high discipline they're more likely to do so.
If you want them to stop unassign their squad from their barracks, and when their current individual drill jobs complete no more will be taken until they have a barracks reassigned. Make sure to reassign their barracks when they go back on duty. Another way is to give them a station order and lock the door behind them when they leave the barracks, then cancel the order. Or you can deconstruct the furniture their barracks is designated from, but that's kind of a pain in the ass.

When will Toady start working seriously on making DF more user friendly?

First of all, the game needs a mandatory tutorial session for the first time you start playing each game mode. It's really uncool to just leave new players hanging, wondering what to do. It's threatening, and like I said, really uncool.

Second, both modes need a main purpose, and a straight path to get there. When a new player is faced with this big world with all kinds of things to do, it can feel kinda confusing. In order to make new players feel more welcome, Toady should probably cut down on the excess features for a while(perhaps remove distractions like music), and work on streamlining the gamplay, for example by adding a clear goal and ending.
>>
>>135540076
Nah, that was removed in .40. Though dwarves who are on duty all the time will never have an opportunity to fill their social/worship/etc needs, so I guess it was added back in more organic way than military dwarves just getting pissed about their jobs.

bait something into a corridor/room with a puppy/kitten/dwarf/whatever, seal it in with a bridge. or if you time it perfectly you could just drop it on as it walks under it.

then you carve out a block above it, and channel all the edges except one, so that it's basically hovering by just the one floor tile

make sure everyone is clear and away from the block, channel out the last square, splat

>>
>>135570673
3 ways I can think of offhand. You can use pump spam to lower the water level enough to build a wall. You can dig a (closable) outlet that drains the water to a lower z-level faster than it fills the tunnel. Or you can drop magma on it to make an obsidian plug. If you have undug natural walls anywhere above the tunnel you could also engineer a cave in to block the tunnel.
Of those 4 ways, option 2 is probably the easiest and safest.
>>
>>135572742
How would you suggest I drain it? I'm still very new to pumps and mechanics and stuff. I tried building a bunch of walls above a support, then collapsing it on top of my passage, but it didn't work, the walls appeared to have vanished once they hit the ground.
>>
>>135573268
Yeah, constructions just collapse into their constituent materials in a cave in. The wiki article on cave ins is a good resource for learning the quirks of how cave ins behave in different contexts.
If you want to use pumps, just build a ton of them downstream from the opening with some retaining walls to keep the water from washing back into the stream or pushing your dwarves off the pumps. Maybe a channel that leads offmap to give the water somewhere to go (there will be more than you expect).
The easier way I referenced would just be to dig into the tunnel or stream from below. Make a wider tunnel that leads to fortifications on the map edge or into the caverns, and be sure to add floodgates or a raising bridge to block the flow later. Water pressure will cause the water to spread downward instead of horizontally. Your tunnel will drain (eventually) and you'll be able to build whatever you want in it. The only (relatively) difficult part will be making the opening wide enough to drain the water faster than it enters the map. You can use the cave in technique you tried before to do that if you dig cleverly. Hint: cave ins pierce floors that don't have walls below them.

I'm really loving the recent Likot Udendeb updates, even though I've given up on keeping track of all the minor characters.

I love how many of the events in the story are possible to re-enact in adventure as well as fort mode.

I also love how the underground bandits use activity zones, now. It makes them more similar to Arol-iton in the Likot story.

I'm also loving Tok's appearance. He was originally based on the default dwarf tile in DF, but has changed radically over the course of the story.

>>
>>135601541
While I agree that it should be possible, it would cause complication with how engravings work. Currently, engravings are associated with the tile they're on, rather than the construction material. Such a system doesn't account for de- and reconstructing walls. If this system is to work realistically, we must be able to build a wall, engrave a particular image, deconstruct it, use the same building material for another wall somewhere else, and then have the original engraving re-appear on the new wall. This would require Toady to re-workthe way in which engravings are handled from scratch. It would probably also kill our fps.

The beloved concrete uses technology very similar to the one behind pottery. Here, a solution of lime and gypsum makes the "clay", while the stone temper is replaced by gravel.

Pottery makes the world go around.

I wouldn't go that far. The widespread use of concretes is one of the worst offenders in the homogenization of the american landscape. I consider their employment as builing material in any nonindustrial context to be an economic and utilitarian expediency, but an aesthetic affront. Especially considering how readily available some of the worlds most beautiful sandstones and marbles are in the US.

Depends on what part of the country you're in. It's a goddamn huge place really, and the difference between suburbs from place to place might not be very significant but once you head in towards town centers there are some crazy changes going from say, the southeast, up to the iron belt, over through new england, down through appalachia, across and uuuuuupppp to the mountains, the awful deathtrap of california, or up to the rain forests of seattle.

Boxy cinderblock structures are definitely a problem though, I remember how out of place it was finding a couple of them on Martha's Vineyard. All these quaint row houses and old churches and shit, a couple smaller buildings here and there, and then a blocky grocery store plunked down in it.

No combat logs, no messages, no nothing. I just leave for a minute or two and 14 fucking badgers just form a conga line and run into my fucking cage traps. Now what do I do with these things? I've made badger bombs before and, while amusing, they take waaaaaaaaay too long to set up for something that just gets rid of a siege or two.

How do i get a tame dragon?

do i have to wait for one to simply wander into the map and accidently trap itself

i am assuming all attempts at subduing it would end in a fiery death
>>
>>135636764
The same way you tame any animal - you get a pair of them, train them as best you can, wait until the female lays some eggs or gives birth and then you can domesticate their offspring.

So, you actually need two dragons. Getting a world with two dragons of the opposite genders is the tricky part. If you have those, enough dosh and a bunch of cage traps at your entrance, they'll eventually come to you and get trapped.

>>
>>135637525
>>135637423
Not really, it's actually easy as hell. I've done it with rocs and it's pretty much the same with dragons. After you've caged them, assign your best animal trainer to the dragons and train them to some level. Then take the dragons and chain them up inside a small room (preferably with cage traps in the hallway leading to it, just in case) and make sure the female dragon is within reach of both the male and a nest box. Just make the nest box right next to the chain. You need these, cause now animals no longer reproduce through spores, so they have to actually fuck in order to have kids. And she needs the nest box to lay some eggs. Your trainer will periodically go check up on the dragons and make sure they don't go wild, so it should be fine. The only risk is if the trainer makes the dragon get off the nest box for any reason, because then the eggs go to shit. Same thing happens if any dwarves go pick up the eggs, so make sure to forbid them after they're laid.

This is probably one of my most monumental forts ever, back from .40.24.

It was pretty ambitious. It was my first attempt a multi room hospital. In the end, I dug out a two level chamber surrounding the hospital, visible through windows in the hospital rooms. I flooded the floors in these chambers, and ended up with a lush garden that my sick dorfs could watch through the windows, when lying in their beds(not that it has any effect, as of yet).

I have some advice, since I've been making above gound forts since 0.31

>your first year is critical for building a large enough wall to house at least 30 dwarves (assuming you are making everything completely above ground) it obviously doesn't have to be fancy, but you can printscreen your window, draw parallel lines in paint, and use those as a guide to make really fancy walls and towers that don't go directly straight up or down
>when building "budget housing" (i like to call it this) which is similar to how houses are generated in human sites in adv mode, make a single ramp at one row of housing, and allow dwarves to use that one ramp for roofing. these simple housing blocks can be 1-4 tiles long (from front of house to back) and 1-2 tiles wide (from side wall to side wall). have the houses share walls
>going back on the paint thing for fortress walls, you can do the same thing for roads to create organic roads. I like to have my roads either 3 tiles wide (for when I'm making super dense blocks) or 5 tiles wide (for avenues)
>use subways (dug out portions beneath roads) to help traffic flow in high traffic areas. especially useful when you have caravans traveling through slums and they block normal flow of traffic if your roads are narrow
>wheelbarrows everywhere
>keep perishables items (namely food) in basements and ensure they are cat accessable. not only will this expose them to less vermin, but it will also keep food closer to dwarves
>have peasants shape boulders into blocks inside your mine and invest in minecarts early since getting your rock to your city center warehouses quickly will allow your builders to have more variety of materials (i love using marble for my libraries)
>when building multistory, build corner walls first, since dorf construction is LIFO and building them as just wall segments can leave the corners inaccessible due to LOS bugs

con't

This isn't going to become a problem like parties do, is it? I don't have enough dorfs for this shit.
>>
>>135644415

con't

>turn on frame buffer render, since it will allow you to maximize the game window AND use the entire window for mouse controls. extremely useful when doing designations or probing for mineral veins
>no matter what, after you have your walls up, your top 3 priorities are 1. training archers to patrol walls 2. finding magma to pipe it up to the surface and 3. building housing out to your walls until you're forced to build up. The more valuable the mats you are using for building (specifically roads and floors), the more likely you're going to get an explosive migrant wave
>build step stools. they allow your dwarves to pick ripe fruit from trees if you have a harvesting zone set up
>for cemeteries, channel a tile and dig 1 tile in any direction below the surface. use wood for caskets, since they are faster to make then coffins. finally, place the casket in the dug out tile and cover the channeled tile with a floor tile and place the slab above ground above the casket. not only does this look great, but it keeps your dwarves from coming back as zombies and escaping their tombs if necros come to town or you build on top an evil glacier or something

When the fuck will people learn that green activities are only performed in LACK OF WORK. If you actually gave them something to do, they'd stop having fun immediatly and get the job done.

It's the purple activities that prevent them from getting work done.

Fuck, it feels like I must repeat this at least once a week. When will players learn?
>>
>>135645990
>When will players learn?
When someone tells them, I guess. Thanks.
>>
>>135646290

Not him but the only things that make dwarves drop everything and not work is scheduled breaks and moods.
>>
>>135644415
>>135645902
Good stuff, I like to do my above-ground building with adventurers, it's fun clambering around working construction like that, though I do make use of the corner first stuff when I start out on a horrorglacier to get a shelter up fast.

Basically a race to see if they can get a wall/roof up over the wagon before doomsludge or zombie wolves show up... or both!
>>
>>135646453
Parties don't stop work? I'm not actually new, but I haven't played in about a year. I could swear dwarves stop work to party.
>>
>>135646453

Additionally, breaks themselves are considered special jobs (they're a darker blue, but still blue) so they don't count towards your idle dwarves, since they technically won't accept jobs even if there's work.
>>
>>135646938

I set meeting hall zones since they prevent parties while still giving all the benefits of say dining rooms set from tables. You're absolutely right though, so my bad.
>>
>>135642836
You mean "is it possible to make a pit?"
Yes it's possible to make a pit which you can use for any purpose you want.
Cages don't work like that, though. If you want them to spill their contents you have to fling them from minecarts into fortifications. Whether or not the creatures survive that is another question.
>>
I got a bug because of using an older save for the new version, cant make bookcases and some other stuff

could retiring and unretiring the fortress fix this?
>>
>>135650367
It's not a bug. What items your civ can create is determined at worldgen, and isn't supposed to change. You'll have to create a new world if you want all of the features in the latest version.
>>135646990
>>135646453
Breaks don't happen anymore, they've been replaced by the more specific needs-related zone tasks in the new version.
I haven't seen any parties either, but I'm not sure I've actually given my dwarves proper rooms to party in, so I'm not certain if they're intended to have been replaced by new activities or not.

Building on the outskirts of the town. Walled in roof with ramp access from outside the wall. The roof is made of retracting bridges. Bait zombies onto the roof with a chained up kitten, then pull the lever. Zombies fall into the building for future use (arena, marksdwarf training, goblin siege dispersal). Goblins are pretty strange in DF. On one hand, they're radically evil, and intimately associated with demons who escape hell during world gen. No, demons, no goblins. It's as easy as that, and it implies that goblins are either:
>demonic themselves, or
>slaves to the demons. Perhaps they were originally elves who got corrupted.

Then, they also play the role of "just another race" living in the multicultural human society. The only way in which their "evil" shows here is how they basically tolerate everything, and won't stigmatise offenders in the same way as humans do.

So there are these two polar appearances the goblins make in df:
>radically evil, demonic
>normal citizens, if a bit eccentric, personality-wise

The only explanation for this is that the original leaders got killed in worldgen. This can happen during worldgen battles, or they can just get murdered by one of their goblins. After that, a goblin takes the role of "master", often resulting in the decline and collapse of the goblin civ.

I'm being serious when I say that goblins depend on demons. It has to do with the dark fortresses themselves. Any civ set to use dark fortresses in the raws will also require a demon leader. Without such a leader, the civ can't spawn in worldgen.

This is pretty easy to try by yourself: just open up advanced worldgen, and generate a world with zero demon types. There won't be any gobs at all.

Legends mode is full of crazy shit and definitely worth exploring.

When dfhack is available (there is a prerelease alpha v2 out right now for 42.06) you can just use open-legends to check through it (or open-legends force during world-gen!) and see what is going on around your fort or to track down something in adventurer mode.

Though the latter is less critical now since so much information is revealed via the storytelling interface. As long as you have some idea of a region or town or site or name to look for you can find the vast majority of stuff revealed in legends just checking through the storytelling screens.

Gentle reminder to never forget that your fortress is not invincible.
I was feeling pretty relaxed and confident until a humanoid, winged FB made of yellow honey beryl somehow flew out of the caverns and into my rubbish chute. There it breathed some sort of frozen extract onto my elite fighters, resulting in them falling down the chute to the magma at the bottom.
Lost 5 or so legendary fighters, along with artifact weapons and armour. All this only a month after a hadrosaurid FB killed the dwarven queen.
>>
>>135701654
That hammer lord survived though, albeit with his entire body rotting at an alarming rate and his hammering arm completely smashed apart
Also a bunch of civilians are rotting too, im guessing they've been walking through the extract to pick up items

I'm tired of dwarves not equipping stuff and when I make them equip they complain about being naked
>>
>>135718948
Remove plant fiber armor and plant fiber legwear. The former because there's no such thing (and you wouldn't want them to equip it even if there was) and the latter because it's redundant with greaves and could potentially conflict with them.

>>
>>135719193
I just want them to wear shirts and trousers

if I dont set to replace clothing they dont equip stuff, if I set it to replace they complain about nakedness
>>
>>135719325
Then select shirts and trousers, not armor and legwear. If you give your dwarves any wiggle room to make their own equipping decisions you're just asking for it to be fucked up.
If they're complaining about nakedness when you set to replace clothing then you're missing upper body equipment, lower body equipment or foot equipment. Those are the only body parts that have to be covered to prevent that thought. Armor counts as coverage for them, so you don't have to have any clothing at all in their uniform as long as you have enough armor.

Atom Smashing is tried and true. Alternatively, transfer them to a wooden cage, then promptly launch it out of a minecart cannon.

Ooh, better idea, make a magma crab pit trap. "The Pit of Molten Doom!"
Put a 2 or 3 unit deep lava layer and toss the crabs in, the execute gobbos in it.

Changes to creatures work fine in existing saves.
>>135751945
The reason your butchers won't touch them is because they have [HOMEOTHERM: 12000], which is the temperature of magma. Change it to what every other (nonmagma) creature has (10067 I think) and give them a while to cool down, then you'll be able to butcher them. It's possible that temperature updates don't happen for caged creatures, but that's a logistics problem you can work out yourself, I'm sure, if it turns out to be the case.
>>
>>135770929
Thanks, i'll try that. But does this affect the crabs living in the magma? will they die because theyre too cold to live there?

How the crap do I make my architect actually do his job? Half my dwarves can't do anything until I get these bridges built, but no matter what I try he won't design the thing. I've turned off every labor but the needed ones, I've lured him out there with another project then removed it, nothing helps. There was a bridge in this exact spot before, why isn't it working?
>>
>>135779084
Wait, I'm an idiot, the wood I'm telling him to use is probably on the opposite side of the bridge. I bet I'll try that first thing tomorrow and it'll work and I'll have wasted the last half hour or so.
>>
>>135775680

The tileset is what actually displays the map tiles, the graphics set is it's own style, though CLA uses a modified version of the old Myne tileset as I recall.

The best is one which isn't square, but what you're looking for are ones where the `,'. tiles are all translucent so the background takes on the color of the punctuation.

Pretty neat shit, haven't really built anything worth showing off myself. Countless versions ago, I had a volcano that I'd channel into the ocean and an aquifer to pump for water, and bauxite as far as the eye could see, first time I utilized magma/lava as a defense and it was fairly effective, was also channelling some into the sea to make a tower of obsidian out in the water.

I noticed a volcano way up in the top right corner of the map, and the elevation export had a spot of high elevation up there so I thought it might be a neat little spike-island-cano thing.

I used gm-editor to put myself over it in travel mode and when I exited travel mode I was sitting on the magma flow at the bottom of the volcano, when I moved a step the water started to pour in and obsidianize so swam up and used launch to fling myself up out of the crater so I could watch it cap.

Then the water froze.
