My point is that Sonic x Amy is the most canon romantic ship in the Sonic series, so it simply cannot be overrated.

Amy was specifically created to be Sonic crush and has been following him through all those games, and Sonic even hinted back in some of them. It won't definitely happen however because sappy romance doesn't fit well in the adventure series, as you said, but it is the 'most canon' romantic ship.

How might Warpnik work in the comics?

I could almost see him as a Feist-lite character; some kind of crazed scientist lording over the Special Zone, devising all kinds of (usually fish or bird-themed) puzzles and traps to ensnare anyone who might enter his domain.

Of course, his relation to Eggman would have to be kept under wraps because of muh mandates, but they could at least throw a passing hint I'm sure.
