As far as I recall there wasn't much of a mess other than spam everywhere, it was more hilarious due to the contrast- BKC is VERY neutered in terms of language, so suddenly having Moonman post was great. There were a couple of people trying to argue him though.

I think the franchise won't really die as long as video games are a thing. If Sega went under right now I wouldn't be worried about Sonic's continued existence. I think its unlikely it will ever blow up huge like it did in the Genesis/Dreamcast era though. There are too many AAA series now, and it also doesn't need to be pushed super hard because a consoles success isn't depending on it.

Unfortunately, you're right. I think a part of it is that Sega's better IPs (NiGHTS, Shenmue, Ecco, etc.) lean more toward the "cult classic" end of the scale and only ran for a game or two. It'd be an awesome underdog story if one of them succeeded, but considering NiGHTS: Journey into Dreams' flop, the odds are slim.

It'd probably be better for them to make an IP out of whole cloth rather than dredge up the past like a certain black hedgehog.
