Okay.

But I do agree with you less tumblr in games would be great. Brilliant shadows was particularly bad because it's all the characters would talk about. One guy had a very cool background story but then it became all about how he was gay and that was his character for the rest of the game.
>>
>>127183250
Are you implying being gay isn't cool? That's fucked up, family.

Big game companies change the names of guns that have been in existence for years and practically should be public domain (having been shot by thousands upon thousands of people) but I assume games wouldn't change the names if there wasn't some sort of way to sue.

Pasting things into an rpy file has nothing to do with renpy itself, since it's not renpy you're using to edit the script with.

Don't know if /evn/ is still interested at this point, but the re-release of The Dandelion Girl is almost done, basically the entire game's bulk is written and coded, including small extra scenes. While it isn't perfect (limited assets) it's definitely a step or two above the original. All that needs to be done is some technical stuff, which I was going to have a particular person for me, but they got preoccupied with their own projects/school/etc. I took a hiatus for a while for work-related stuff, myself. It's weird when you start doing something on the side (writing) and the career you start (food service/hospitality) ends up being completely different and eating up (ha) a lot of that time.

Stuff that's done:

>Bulk of script
>Music
>Basic coding
>Basic menus
>Sprites, CG, BGs

Stuff that needs to be done

>Code clean-up
>Fine-tuning code, transitions and menus, etc.
>Menu coding
>Memorandum (extras) menu
>Creating an installer

Stuff that needs to be done that I plan on doing solo

>Website relaunch

All original artwork for the game is intact, albeit some parts have been shifted around. Would've liked to work with the original artist to remake some stuff, as what artwork I've seen from him is exponentially greater than what we had at the time but he wasn't interested and I didn't want to show disrespect by replacing it. The script is reworked and reads much, MUCH more smoothly. The whole project started from a desire to do the other assets justice, as I half-assed the script the first time I wrote it.

Obviously the re-release won't cost any money. And on a side-note, though I like the nostalgia of ONScripter, fuck me for starting off with it.

If you have skills that could help with the technical aspects of the re-release, that would be great. Reply to this post, if I don't hear anything I'll assume there's no interest and I'll try to look elsewhere.

Final Note: Even though the graphics haven't aged the greatest, Julie is still QT as fuck.

Also: The game is a good bit longer. Like, maybe 20% longer? And it's less fluff, more backstory. Some references to the original story were thrown out, others altered or replaced. The artwork has been at most, rearranged, out of respect. Nothing replaced.

Still can't believe it's been six years since the original came out. No regrets, except on taking so long.

First, you should put that in quotes for clarity.

Second, Artists have always been known for being flighty/unreliable/flaky. This is not some recent invention or unique to the vn community. It just comes up a lot here because visual novels are created as projects and art asset production is required-- this puts the reliability of artists front and center.

Be really vague about implying trans = futa and you have transwomen working in your team who enjoy futa and feel like they are being represented in your visual novel "Futa High School: The Big Black Cock"
>>
>>127276464
>Be really vague about implying trans = futa
Didn't he outright say that futa are trans?

>you have transwomen working in your team who enjoy futa and feel like they are being represented in your visual novel "Futa High School: The Big Black Cock"
I still don't see this going over very well, because there are always those who think they are speaking for the entire community when they find something offensive.

>Nigga that argument doesn't make any sense...
The more penises, the hotter it is. Just add 1+ penis. Would a woman with 8 boobs be more your thing?
>>
>>127277515
I think you are mistaken about how the whole more is better thing works.
>>
>>127277825
So it should be one massive cock and 2 gigantic boobs then? Sounds like a scene out of Armored Warrior Iris, which by the way did have a guy with 2 penises.
>>

A visual novel where you are slowly transformed against your will into something else.

Can I play as a tentacle monster, senpai?
>>
It is frustrating when an attempt at representing genuine diversity gets brushed off as offensive because it wasn't quite exactly the right flavor of diversity for whoever complained.

Sometimes a boy in a dress is a boy in a dress and not a trans woman, and that is okay. Boys can wear dresses too.

Drag is a thing some people do for fun and self-expression.

Futas are not trans women. They are not men either. They are girls with dicks. If anything, they would be intersex, but mostly they are fantasies that many people of different genders and orientations have.

However, this sort of complaint is really less common than some of the ooga-booga bandits make it out to be. Yes, there are some people who will complain, there are always some people who will complain, but they're a minority and probably better ignored.
>>
>>127278617
>A visual novel where you are slowly transformed against your will into something else.
Why slowly, though? Get on with it.

Maybe I just don't have the right fetish for slow creeping horrror of approaching death. I'd rather deal with "I woke up and I was a bimbo / a centaur / a sentient pair of underwear" and go from there.
>>
>>127278971
>Drag is a thing some people do for fun and self-expression.
Didn't you hear about the time trans people tried to ban drag queens from a queer pride parade because their presence offended them, and how they had already won until a stink was raised on the internet and people remembered drag queens were at the vanguard of the gay acceptance movement?

I wish the issues were less common, I really do. Ignoring them doesn't make them go away, it just reinforces the walls of their echo chambers.

Well, giving in to their demands isn't ignoring them, obviously.

It's just silly. Many people do sex/gender differently. As long as they're not hurting each other, why not let them?

Hell, if you want to call yourself a trans-asian dragon otherkin, as long as you're not hurting anyone, I DON'T CARE. have fun.

These kinds of discussions always cause major arguments on Steam forums. Your best bet is explaining you're locking the thread due to arguments and leave it visible.

I think it's still going to be a series of 3 other vns, but he might do side stories as comics or short stories, like the Toko Christmas Carol.

I want eyepatch chuuni to show up. Pic related.
>>
>>127284680
Once their space mecha vn comes out and the Dizzy Hearts KS finally gets fulfilled, their next project, unless another one just pops up out of thin air, is to finish Toko this year. So, we'll see how well that plan pans out.
>>
>>127285509
Gotta say, my level of belief in their ability to finish things and provide a satisfying story is not high.
>>
>>127286387
I dislike episodic games where the parts aren't standalone, so I'm waiting for Toko to be finished before playing it.

I played the game jam version though, so if it keeps the story and characters at least at that level I'll be satisfied.
>>
>>127284083
Starlight Vega, Highway Blossoms, any other yuri
>>
>>127287439
>Highway Blossoms
Won't this be HRP dev's first release?

The character art looks fine, but the BGs aren't very good.

No Steam key if I buy the adult version is annoying, because it's the same game, but with fade to black in the Steam version.
>>
>>127287857
Yeah, it's their first.

The background thing is weird, because they're working with Badriel. It seems like some of his stuff is really good, and some is shit. Maybe he just doesn't try that hard all the time.

I'd guess that there will be a way to patch the Steam version. That's what Sunrider Academy did.
>>
>>127288160
They're releasing the 18+ version on denpasoft and said you won't get a Steam key for it. So it looks like no patch this time. In fact, it looks like 18+ patches are becoming less common.
>>
>>127288414
No official patch doesn't mean someone won't patch it, because fuck actually paying for the extra content you want people to make.
>>
>>127289140
It's not extra content. The dev said that the 18+ content was already there, but is being cut out of the Steam release.
>>
>>127289319
>it's not extra content, it's just extra content
>>
>>127289389
It's not extra content, they're just trying to jew people into paying for the same game twice.
>>
>>127287439

Starlight Vega is appealing.

Strawberry Vinegar is cute but I am balking at the idea of paying $10 for it when there's only one possible distant-epilogue romance option.

A Little Lily Princess is cute and hasn't said what it's going to cost.

The Wild Catgirl game isn't very cute but at least it's cheap.

Highway Blossoms I'm going to be waiting for reviews on, both the ideas and being by the HRP people make me worry it's a snoozefest.

Toko episode 0 was a letdown and I'm not sure they're ever going to finish it.

Sakura Fantasy I don't think they have any idea what they're doing.
>>
>>127289517
Yes. One time... with extra content.

You could buy the cake, or you could buy the cake WITH a scoop of ice cream.
>>
>>127289715
But then I don't get Steam cards and people won't know I'm playing lesbian treasure hunt.
>>
>>127289715
No, it was cake with icecream and they scraped it off, and now they're holding it hostage.
>>
>>127289918
This is legitimately my struggle. Do I want to play the version with lesbian sex, or do I want everyone on my Steam account to know I'm playing another gay visual novel? Even with the Sakura games, I don't have to pick whether or not I want trash and smut or just trash, and I don't like that I have to pick between fluffy lesbians and fluffy lesbians with sex here ;-;
>>
>>127289715
This would be a better comparison if the deluxe option also included the Steam key. As it is you really do have to pay twice for the same cake, if you want both tits and cards.

I don't know why they're not giving out the Steam key, unless they're just trying to slow down people making the patch by trying to limit the numbers of folks who have both a steam copy and the sexy copy.
>>
>>127290062
Here is cake with icecream. It costs $2.50
Or I could remove the icecream and sell you just the cake for $2.
>>
>>127289558

>Strawberry Vinegar is cute but I am balking at the idea of paying $10 for it

I know it had several endings but that is surprising to hear it's going to be $10. Asphyxia went humble bundle pretty quickly last time so I imagine you'll get a chance for a cheaper price.

>Sakura Fantasy I don't think they have any idea what they're doing.

Long as they dont put random het in it ill be fine
>>
>>127290296
The game is going to cost $9.99 and both versions will cost the same price. I don't want to spend an extra $10 for toppings.
>>
>>127290874
If they both cost the same then this is a complete nonissue.
>>
>>127290304
I'd be shocked if Sakura Fantasy is ever completed. Sakura Spirit ended on a sequel hook and they still haven't done a sequel to that.
>>
>>127290992
Except the 18+ version doesn't have Steam cards and people can't see what you're playing. You'd have to pay $20 to get it all.
>>
>>127291171
>steam cards
Who cares.
>people can't see what you're playing
Who cares.

You're like those people who don't buy games that don't have achievements.
>>
There will be a free patch to apply the 18+ content to the steam version of Highway Blossoms. It'll be the same as what Sunrider does.
>>
>>127291303
>Who cares?
Steam users who won't buy this game out of "principles".
>>
>>127291034
That's kind of what I meant about no idea what they're doing. Last I heard they had no clue how to write a chapter 2 for sakura fantasy, I don't know if they're ever going to bother.
>>
>>127291330
Glad to hear it. Any release date yet?
>>
>>127291330

>>
>>127291632
The statement "it's important" was used repeatedly in that game to explain why the characters had to do things, so you're probably right about them having no idea where they were going with tit.
>>
>>127291634
Nothing specific. We're still aiming for Q1 of this year. But it'll probably be on the later end of that.

>>
>>127297610
>Would he be relatable enough to get people to enjoy the game?
I dunno it depends on whether you can write.

(Hypothetically I am okay with playing a popular guy. Hopefully popular includes him having actual male friends and not just hordes of girls in love with him for no obvious reason.)
>>
>>127295103
Three Guys That Paint, the subject of that bad lp a week ago. I read it and a couple other vns, this one pretty much handled things in that bait-in-switch way many do. That is, you start off with simple slice-of-life stuff with Alicia(mc's daughter) who's interested in paleontology and being an astronaut and his two friends Arthur and Terri, with the three of them running a painting business together. Meet weird girl who wants to move in the room he's renting and hangs out with Nigel's friends. Then it turns out dinosaur aliens are kidnapping people through port-a-potties and Morwenna(new tenant and an alien) is on a sidequest(her main quest is to find the Meaning of Life within a Black Cube) to stop them. There's an attack at the house, a dino's captured, and depending on your choices(which of the two friends you hang out with the most, or with your daughter) the romance aspect comes into play when a port-a-potty you just notice in the back of your truck heads to the spaceship. One of Nigel's two friends and Alicia(or just you) is kidnapped, and through his love for [insert LI here], they set off alarms and get the orange dinosaurs arrested. A few interesting ideas, but no real fleshing out of any of them save the parent/child relationship between Nigel and Alicia, that's not completely there since their behavior(namely that they're always on a first name basis with each other) indicates that's she not his biological child. This is in fact pointed outright be Morwenna, but that's dropped.
Morweena's more or less "canon" since the others have little involvement when you don't force it, Arthur especially. 6 out of 10, it was an alright read. The art style hurts its quality rating to me, since it's not particularly fitting(Plus I don't like it personally. I would overlook that if the writing was patched up better.).

One of the two heroines in that game is basically Genocide Jill. She's a young woman from a futuristic, Western society who woke up in a more "primitive" Asian society she saw as backwards, because it disagreed with her progressive sensibilities. She hated it to the point that she decided she'd rather kill the entire society, herself included, than to live in a society that conflicted with what she thought the world should be. I honestly never understood why that game was so popular.
>>
>>127341976

>>
>>127342067

>>127342236

No, but it makes her much more sympathetic than someone who killed everyone because they weren't as progressive.
>>
>>127342067
She was dead either way. There was no cure for her illness and the technology in the society was breaking down because no one really knew how to fix it. She would've had a better at it just taking a "When in Rome" stance. Heck, one of the nobles wife's was having an affair with her female servant, so it's not like woman couldn't do anything they wanted.
>>
>>127342374
She hated them because of how they treated her. She even imagined a rivalry another female in the society, but that woman was never even aware that this imagined rivalry ever existed.

I played Juniper's Knot and disliked how almost nothing about the fiend's past was really explained. She killed a village of people but that wasn't why she was imprisoned? Okay, then why was she imprisoned?

IIRC they were planning a sequel, but I don't know if they planned to fill in any more of the fiend's past with it. It's a moot point now that the studio is dead.
>>
>>127343463
Don't take it personally.

You're told off for looking into the kids' conversations, except there's no way for you not to read them and you're continuously prodded to go and read. I spent a fair bit of time trying not to, because I found them boring as fuck, so the whole ending fell flat for me.

I also found it ridiculous how it seemed to only give positive traits to the gay characters, while the straight ones are the teacher who is continuously peeking at his students' conversations on Facebook and almost fucking one of his students and a turbo bitch who's a cliche mean girl soft of type. If someone did the opposite they'd be lynched on Twitter and Tumblr.

HotForTeacher's straight too and not depicted as a bad person.
Although I was somewhat annoyed by that storyline as the writer seems to think you are a horrible, horrible person for considering a relationship with her despite her being *very clearly* aware of her actions and trying to manipulate you into a relationship.

If you want to make a point about teacher/student romance being predatory, it helps if the teacher actually is taking advantage. You can even show it being a grey area and show WHY a teacher should say no even when a student throws herself at him... but this didn't do that, instead we got the girl lecturing us on how adult she was and how she deserved to be treated like one.
>>
>>127351912
I'm overly sympathetic to teacher/student romance because of some badly-handled cases in the UK where the male teacher was branded an evil predator despite the details revealing much more of an error of judgment than a scheming monster plotting to molest your children.

(At least two cases where friendship turned into romance, they tried to keep it hidden, people started suspecting, parents try to break them up, angsty teenage girl threatens to harm herself or run away on her own if boyfriend won't go with her because it's the only way she can get any control over her life, boyfriend gives in and goes with her, and now oops he's done for kidnapping and child molesting)

I'm not blaming the girls or saying they set out to ruin the men's lives or anything, both sides are being caught in a system that didn't give them a good way to resolve the situation.
>>
>>127352880
I would say that the moral of the story here is teenage girls are monsters.
>>
>>127351912
>>127352880

I'm guessing you guys didn't take the alternative choice in that route. You can actually accept the student's advances and at the end of the game, the teacher and student are dating (implying they'll have sex in the future) without any consequences. Obviously they're gonna try to hide it but that seems impossible since the student actually talked to suicideprank gal pal about wanting to suck the teacher's cock on the social network that everyone can see.
>>
>>127354306
and that's exactly why you shouldn't fuck them. Don't stick your dick in crazy
>>
>>127354526
No, I did, but from what she's said on twitter the author thinks everyone is creepy and horrible for taking that choice even though the game implies it's totally fine. I think she did not achieve what she intended to.
>>
>>127341976
lol i don't understand people who try to paint digital a love story as 'evil feminist propaganda', yeah clove is feminist and it's very obvious from her social media, but digital is actually pretty mild imo? yes all the charas die, but the game never tries to say all these people deserved to die, it takes effort to show some of them were essentially decent people (even if they did do jerky things or have sexist views). i don't think the narrative of the game is nearly as black and white as you're trying to paint it.
>>
>>127354306
Teenagers are driven insane by a world that alternately treats them as adults or as children based on what someone else finds convenient but never what THEY want.

From a fifteen-year-old girl's perspective, "I'm in love with a great guy and he loves me too, but I have no power to determine where I live or what I do or who I date and my parents are going to take all my things away and force me to live halfway across the country away from all my friends!" ... of course running away sounds appealing.

It's not like they can admit they fell for each other and seek mediation, either. He'd be in legal trouble right away. They're cut off from sane fallbacks so they go for the insane ones. Desperation makes people stupid.
>>
>>127356590
>she's said on twitter the author thinks everyone is creepy and horrible for taking that choice even though the game implies it's totally fine. I think she did not achieve what she intended to.

that's hilarious considering she's also said that "word of god" means nothing and people's interpretation of the work will drive the meaning of it.

I want to say Sunrider, but this is basically because my laptop is really old and the battles lag my laptop so, so much I can't actually get past them - it took so long for anything I tried to input to register I got bored. That's not really the dev's fault, but the fault of my terrible laptop, which gets stuck even playing ren'py games.

Now, if we're talking about Sunrider Academy... That did run on my laptop, but the stat grinding was very, very tedious, and I didn't find much of the comedy that funny.

And, maybe Cinders... Cinders looks absolutely gorgeous, I loved the sprites and animated backgrounds, but I remember thinking it seemed kind of short, and though it had a lot of choices, they were pretty superfluous and didn't seem to change all that much except some flavor text. It felt like a very linear story line masquerading as something more interactive. I don't regret buying it, and I think it's super pretty, but I'm not a fan of VNs that claim they have loads of choices but don't really deliver on it.
>>
>>127356635
I don't think the official narrative of the game is meant to be that black and white, but I definitely see a lot of people supporting the murderer and completely forgiving her for her actions in ways that are kind of creepy.

I never played the sequel, I don't know if she eventually develops any sense of remorse.
>>
>>127357171
>didn't seem to change all that much except some flavor text. It felt like a very linear story line masquerading as something more interactive. I don't regret buying it, and I think it's super pretty, but I'm not a fan of VNs that claim they have loads of choices but don't really deliver on it.

This is one of the problems with hiding your stats for 'immersion' - if people can't see what all the choices are doing, they may think they do nothing at all.

I am not a Cinders expert but there definitely are multiple endings and plot branches that are only unlocked through the variables you're building up (how smart cinders is, how ruthless she is, how romantic she is, etc)

Kind of a pain to replay to find all the outcomes though
>>
>>127357305
When I read it I honestly got this sense that you were meant to think what she did was bad, and you're not meant to wholeheartedly agree with her or think 'genocide is the best solution!' - I think it's meant to be more like... She was cornered and in a very horrible situation, so she did the only thing she could think of to escape it (and to 'punish' the people who were awful to her), and was then deliberately keeping it from the MC when you first meet them because she thinks 'Oh what I did was p bad if I tell them they'll hate me!' Which would explain why she's so like 'OK I'll tell you, but only if you promise not to judge me!'
I think the narrative in Analogue is honestly pretty interesting... I think it would have been nice if you got more of an insight into the other people on the ship, and they were fleshed out a bit more, so it would add a bit more to the moral complexity.

And I don't know if I buy *Mute suddenly being like 'oh no, they did that to you? How awful! Well ofc you killed them, now I understand perfectly!' to the Pale Bride in the harem ending, it seemed awfully sudden.
>>
>>127344481
I think that's a good choice out of the two artists you've posted so far.
>>
>>127357671
I know it changes stuff, but the overall 'plot' remains relatively the same, and there aren't any real branches or paths like there are in some other VNs - it just alters who she ends up with, her relationship with her sisters, some personality stuff, on the one linear-ish path. So the story doesn't change that much depending on what you do - your choices do get acknowledged but they didn't get acknowledged enough for my liking.
>>

You uh, kind of oversimplify the shit she went through to get to the point where she thought killing everyone was reasonable.

I mean really, they cut out her fucking tongue for backtalking and the the one person that had been nice to her died and like, no, murdering an entire spaceship full of people isn't cool, but it's not as though she was particularly stable at the time she did it. She snapped.
>>
>>127364302
Why'd they back out? Did you pay for the sketches?
>>
>>127366117
Whoops, I meant I backed out of considering them for the project. I didn't ask either of them for sketches, up until that point we had simply been discussing the possibility of them working for me and what that would require in terms of art, deadlines, quotes etc. I was upfront with them from the start that I was considering others as well. They were both very nice about it and wished me good luck on the project.
I am paying/have paid for the sketches of the artists I posted in thread.

She kept backtalking for fucking years. They warned her around twenty trillion times that she should act like a normal woman, but she just kept going SJW in a traditional society.

Everyone warned her. EVERYONE. Imagine if you went to Imperial early WWII-era Japan and started telling everyone you met on the streets that gaijins and democracy are the future and they should bow down to their new overlords. And so, you're warned time and time again, maybe with a small jail sentence, a slap on the wrist, by friends and family... and you ignore them.

Then, you're harshly punished for your activities it after years of that shit. WHOA - Didn't see that coming, better kill everyone!

When in Rome...

>>127358085 Puts it much better than I did. It's not okay that she did it, but there's a difference between cold blooded "Yeah let's murder a bunch of people for fun whatever" and "Holy shit everything and everyone is awful goodbye." IMO.

>>127368009
It's still kinda traumatizing to go through that, regardless of whether you were warned or not, but I suppose YMMV on whether she should've seen it coming or not.
>>
>>127368009

Sure people can argue about anything, but I feel a work that opens up argument about the morality of mass genocide and sexism is more interesting than something that opens up argument about who the best waifu is. The fact that some people argue that mass genocide was in some way justified is really disturbing. If the heroine was going to kill herself anyway, she didn't need to take everyone else with her. She was just being vengeful for how the society treated her. She killed man, woman, and child.
>>
>>127373531
>She was just being vengeful for how the society treated her. She killed man, woman, and child.

I'm not defending her but in her mind that made sense because everyone's already indoctrinated in a centuries old culture. Genocide everyone and start clean again.

I'm playing Backstage Pass and it's really cute... It's so polished, I like it a lot! And (so far) it seems, even though there's a lot of sim stuff, there are a bunch of events sprinkled throughout so you don't get bored grinding stats. Sunrider Academy should've handled its stat-raising more like this...
Most of the voices are super cute (I like Adam and Benito a lot - and Lloyd), but John's is pretty... strange. I'm British, and he doesn't sound like any British person I've ever heard. I still feel like he's gonna be my fav guy though, since I like older men...

I've read some Steam reviews and a lot of them say that the sim difficulty is extremely high, i.e. it requires a lot of grinding to get the best end. So after completing the heroine's routes I want a 'true' path to open up in which the tweest is revealed to be that:
Each route takes place in a different version of reality, but within the same alternate universe.
Each time a route is played the set conditions are always the same, and only the same actions can be taken, looping infinitely.
Outside of these routes the MC is trapped alone inside the 'true' universe.
The MC of the alternate universe routes is the same MC as in the true universe but is a blank slate version of themselves who views the route as their actual only reality.
It is only upon realizing through multiple iterations of these routes that they were trapped within an alternate reality, that the MC is released from the alternate universe and is sent back to their own.
However when sent back they are alone, since the heroines are also trapped until they too realize the same truth.
The true end culminates in the heroines being transported to the true universe (they were able to realize the truth due to pooling their collective consciousness' together and viewing their own routes outside of themselves) where the MC resides (who has been waiting an undefined amount of time) for their return.

I need to know /vg/, with the correct execution can this be pulled off well or would it look dumb even in the hands of Shakespeare? Would it only work with the correct amount of foreshadowing?
>>
>>127388535
I like the trope of having a character get obsessed with a menial task in order to keep their mind off the real issue, failing at it and having a disproportionate emotional breakdown that others don't understand when the realization comes in.
>>
>>127388535
Throw some "it cannot be helped" in there and you're golden.
>>
>>127385710
Yeah, it's done, but there are some small things - the MC doesn't have a voice yet, though she's meant to, and some random background characters aren't voiced (stuff like Girl #1). Also, not all the spoken dialogue lines up w what the charas actually say, or the wrong dialogue is with what's spoken, but this has only happened a handful of times and I've played for about 2 hours. So it seems pretty finished and rather polished.

>>127385907
He keeps saying 'mate' but like... Nobody I know says that. It feels more like an Australian thing... It amuses me when non-Brit people try to write Brit charas and pepper their dialogue with all these 'stock British phrases' I never actually hear people use.

>>127386984
I'm only 2 hours in so idk how hard the sim aspect is, I'm trying to go for one of the guys but I already feel I might have messed it up by not making the right choices...
But it really doesn't feel that heavy on the sim stuff, because the sim stuff is broken up by so many scenes of charas interacting - like, if you go to the mall to buy stuff, you often get short scenes of Sian bumping into various characters and having conversations. There are also a lot of characters to interact with, so it feels like there's a lot to do. It's a lot of fun so far!

Fading Hearts. It's completely nonsensical, has a stupid plot, is filled with anime cliches (but it's not even set in Japan?? Even though everyone has Japanese names??), and the stat building is pointless. Also, the endings you can get seem completely arbitrary - i.e. you can end up romancing a girl even if you only interact with her twice in the whole story.
Fading Hearts is just really weird.

Let me clarify, I would not then expect someone else to replicate the style later, I would just get a sketch of a character and then, if I really like the commissioned artist's work, I would consider them once I'm further through the design process.

When I said for inspiration purposes, I meant for me personally as the writer.

sorry, I really hate that shit. it's a prejudice of mine.

there's no excuse for going around with a suit half-unzipped and your boobs half-hanging out and no bra, ebcause you would literally have to glue the zipper and your nipples into position to make it stay that way.

half-unzipped with a sports bra underneath, okay. half-unzipped with nothing underneath because you have actual lasers implanted in your nipples and need to be able to whip your tits out at a moment's notice, fine. half-unzipped because you're trying to seduce or distract someone so it was actually worthwhile gluing yourself into a 'sexy half dressed' look, fine. but this is not a reasonable way for people to just walk around.

I think you should write what you want to write, if you feel excited about the idea. Not everyone will play all the routes to get the true ending, if you don't mind that everyone won't see it. It reminds me a little of the Matrix or Inception, so it can be done. If it's your first game, I'd say to write for yourself foremost before thinking deeply about the readers, but that's just my opinion.

Has anyone here used Game Maker for a VN? I have experience with GM, and in learning Renpy, I feel like it would be easier to add VN elements to a GM game than it would be to add gameplay elements to Renpy

especially since there are so many text handling systems that have been made for GM
>>
>>127436217
Not personally, but maybe Tom Grochowiac wrote about it, he used Game Maker for Cinders and I'd guess Solstice as well. Try and search his blog.
>>
>>127436304
it seems he has, thanks for the tip
I'm pretty sure platformer gameplay is outside of the reasonable scope of Renpy compatibility though, and I never learned Python either, so I'll probably go with GM afterall

The current version of "tuesday" was done in Game Maker. We did it first on Construct 2, but decided to switch when we had issues exporting to OS other than Windows. We also wanted to try mobile exports, but it didn't work out very well.

Playing more Backstage Pass. It's cute, the stat grinding still doesn't feel very tedious - though later in the game there are notably fewer events. I think, even though I'm quite far in, there are some charas I still haven't met, which is interesting.

Got onto John's romance route - I was worried I wouldn't be able to, since I messed up some choices earlier, but maybe it's not as punishing as I feared.

Sian is kind of odd as an MC, though. She's meant to be very shy and bad with crowds, which does come through in the dialogue, and it's nice seeing other charas interact with her shyness differently - Adam, the childhood friend, is understanding, whereas people in her workplace are more 'pull yourself together' about it. But... I think the writers wanted Sian to have social phobia and be shy, but they also wanted to write her as a 'strong independent woman' MC - and I'm not saying these two traits can't go together (you can be shy but still not appreciate men trying to swoop in and help you), but the way it's handled is odd.

Sian kind of seems to jump back and forth between being rather shy and self-effacing, and confident and strong - e.g., to get into the John romance, she's the one who makes the first move, and she kind of talks about it like a business merger or something ('I have an interest in developing our relationship. Let's pursue a romance together' - or something worded as equally un-romantically). The narrative even notes 'oh, I'm being really weirdly forward about this for me!', but she just continues on like that, and I wasn't too fond of how it was handled. It feels like she moves between two quite different personality archetypes when the plot calls for it... And confessing to somebody in this really staid manner was super un-romantic for an otome game. It didn't make my heart dokidoki.
>>
>>127440491
huh, my friend and I were considering Construct 2 as well, but decided against it for fear of incompatibility

its reassuring to see a lot of good looking VNs in Game Maker, thanks man

I got the sprites for my game today! It's a short story about a group of smugglers who are bringing people and supplies out of warzones in the middle of an interstellar war that is getting drastically more violent as time goes on.

I got the sprites, got the music, and I have a fair bit the story done. I'm hoping I can have the backgrounds soon and be done with it by the end of the month.

>>
>>127462242
What about your results are you unhappy with? Your method would make for cleaner lines than my method. It depends whether you want a cel shaded look or a painterly look. I usually do flat colors first, then flat shadows and highlights, then any blending and painting.

not quite sure what result I'm looking for, I think a more painterly effect is what I need though

>>

She already has, iirc? I'm pretty sure she's admitted being more into guys since the hormones, but just doesn't have one in her harem.
>>

>I'm pretty sure she's admitted being more into guys since the hormones

funny, the same thing happened to Merrit Kopas.

>>
>>127471902
>Clove herself comes off as bi to me.

Isn't "she" a tranny?
>>
>>127470980
>>127471164

That happens to be the case for most young "lesbians", mind you. Girls who are really bi but want to come across as "interesting", only to regret it later and settle down with a guy who will most likely never know of the things she did as a late teen. If it sounds oddly specific, it's because I've seen it happen several times. It's also why many older lesbians prefer not to get too close to young ones, it's an almost certain heartbreak when they decide to go back to being straight.

>>127471902
Clove is a guy.

>>
>>127475565
You don't understand, young lesbians fucked my aunt over a lot.l
>>
>>127473921
According to /lgbt/ it's pretty common for your sexuality to go into overdrive, so if you only very slightly liked something beforehand, it gets magnified a lot.

I don't know if anyone covers that in fiction, I don't really seek out 'realistic' transition fiction. Magic sex changes are more fun for me.
>>
>>127475371
Would anyone want to play a vn where the MC gets dumped by her "lesbian" lover who decides she wants to get married? The MC then goes on a roadtrip, meeting many interesting individuals, and may even find love?
>>
>>127475371
>they decide to go back to being straight.

so.. bisexuals.
>>
>>127475745

set me up with your aunt? I'm the real deal and one of my big reasons for my cougar fetish is they're more likely to know they're actually lez than young girls.
>>
>>127475745
If it was in recent years, tell your cougar aunt to date people her own age.
>>
>>127475925
Precisely, yeah. But bi has a stigma to it so they prefer lesbian because of >>127470684
and similar shit. It's a game for two.
>>
>>127475837
>what is brilliant shadows

Not really, but I think you'll get many of the same reactions. A lot of people will be annoyed by the dumping-at-start and feel that it starts them off with a sour taste, distracting them from the fun part.
>>
>>127475925
I think people tend to really overestimate bisexuality in girls. A lot of straight girls are willing to fool around with the same sex but they'll never stick around for a long term relationship. Most girls are straight, dawg.
>>
>>127476186
The problem with Brilliant Shadows was that people thought the best friend was going to be the love interest. As long as you're upfront about the current love interest not being the one they end with, I doubt people would react so negatively.
>>
>>127475745
That implies they fucked your aunt a lot too, making her a loose slut.
>>
>>127476259
I think a lot of people have crazy double standards when it comes to bisexuality.

A girl who sleeps with other girls and then gets into a long-term relationship with a guy? Totally straight.

A guy who only dates girls but jerked off to a picture of a naked man once? Totally gay.
>>
>>127476558
Classy as always /evn/.
>>
>>127475994
She has a steady girlfriend now, but it took quite a while. I felt really bad for her even though my own love life was shit too, because it must be really hard to feel like your sexuality is seen as a fucking fetish by younger girls. Hope you can find a cougar, the only other available lesbian I know is young and so in the closet it's fucking painful. Like, come on C., just come out! You get along with me, we used to read gay shit together! No one cares, and if your parents don't know yet they're fucking blind because you're obsessed with big-thigh korean girls!

>>127476089

>>127476558

>>
>>127476546
I definitely agree that it would help if you emphasize "dumped" in the marketing so that people don't get the wrong idea, I just think it might be slightly distracting. You don't want to set your target audience off on a "not all lesbians" rant before they've even played the game.

I'd love that, to be honest, especially if it's a friend coming over and talking shit in solidarity.

Rising Angels: Fates might not end up episodic afterall.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/chief/rising-angels-fates-visual-novel/posts/1457924
>Release plan question from last update: When I post a question to the audience, it is almost always split across the board. Almost like clockwork really. Last week, we asked if people would like to see a splintered release as opposed to a longer release. That streak of split votes has been utterly demolished with a near unanimous vote against staggered. There was some concern about releasing an episode and then not being able to change things, but we’ve already finalized the core and had it voice acted, so we are pretty set as it is. That being said, we are going to step back and re-evaluate that idea. Hard to argue when everyone finally agrees for once.
>>
>>127502061
That's very clever wordsmithing that shows he is still planning it. Notice how he commits to nothing and gives counterpoints.
>>
>>127503679
I was wondering about that. It read to me like "We'll reconsider it...maybe."

They might've already had the episodic release planned out and can't easily rework their plans now, especially if they were going to use the episodes to keep hype up for the Fates sequel.

you are the chosen guardian of the magical girl virgin with the power to save the world, monsters and villains keep trying to kidnap and rape her to destroy her power
'good' route, you save her from being ravished and she falls in love with you and begs you to sleep with her, if you refuse she figures you value her magic more than her and goes crazy and destroys everything. if you give in, you discover her power isn't actually destroyed when her virginity is lost, everyone's been lying to you, and you take over the world together
'bad' route you don't save her in time, she gets assaulted by monsters and then begs you not to tell the temple. if you don't tell, she discovers her powers still work and realises that everyone's been lying to her, as above, and takes over the world without you. if you turn her in, she murders you in revenge. or you can run away together and marry her and pretend she never had magical powers, and the monsters overrun the earth

You're a 13 years old boy living with his gorgeous mom and two cute sisters in a quiet secluded town somewhere in undefined Eastern Europe. One day a friend of the family comes over and hands you a message telling you to come over sincethe time has come to claim your father's legacy.

Upon visiting, you find out that your "older sister" is actually your mother, your mother is actually your great-grandmother, your whole family shares the same father, the reason why the local police department is 95% female is because it has to consist almost fully of ever-horny futas with abnormally large cocks, and the whole town is a branch of research on purebreeds conducted by a secret society with the purpose of creating a superhuman species. With the help of your newfound advisor who turns out to a eunuch and your father's former right hand, you undergo inhuman physical and mental training required for a Master of town, then re-enter your family's manor with the numerous relatives called from all over the world. With the old laws reinstated, the town turns into a den of constant sex and lots of incest.

Within this stormy hedonistic ocean, however, lurk many shadows. What exactly is the purpose of research? Why did your father break ties with the secret society? The answers are encoded in your genome.

Welcome a story of incest, slavery, intrigue and treason. A Rising Fate Appears: Sakura Highway by Winged Wolves, coming out Q3 2017!

It might get featured. I intend to put a lot of anti-"transgender" sentiment in it. It might be a bit too subtle and people might not realize that my messages about honesty and the pitfalls of pretending to be something you are not are actually criticisms of trying to lie about your gender and get society to accept that lie.

I don't think this person is qualified to give opinions on anything, really.
>>
>>127588027
Check out theme-hunter on tumblr. It's a lot of user made themes so there's a lot more variety to work with and there's a lot of tags to work with so you don't have to dig through every single theme.

Also if you need help adjusting something outside of the options panel (like changing a font) and don't know CSS, there's at least one anon here that can help you with that.
>>
>>127588181

Why does everyone want to shit on Ren'Py? It seems like it's pretty functional for creating visual novels and that it is the way to go unless you want heavy game elements.

What's wrong with it? What is it missing to create a normal visual novel?
>>
>>127588984
>What's wrong with it?

Nothing.

>What is it missing to create a normal visual novel?

Absolutely nothing.

You can make quite a lot of game elements in it, too, although there are obviously some things you do need to reach elsewhere for. If you're looking for proper 3d, if you want to use the animation plugins that RenPy can't support yet, etc.

However, the reviewer's phrase
> I struggle to think of anything more blatantly amateur.

Is still odd, because using a freebie easy tool like renpy is common among people much more blatantly amateur.
>>

What is the shittiest evn you ever had the misfortune of paying for?
Mine is : http://www.hanakogames.com/datewarp.shtml
I was b& when this came out, and having previously pirated one of their other games I asked in the comment section of the trailer they had put up for the game where I could get it for free, and one of the devs sent me a very angry youtube message of which the only phrase I can remember from it was "you wouldn't go into a shop and ask the owner where you can shoplift their goods, would you?" which made me feel bad so I shelled out the $9.95 which I made by doing chores, and even my underage ass could tell this game was absolute shite from the outset. Everything about it is awful, the minigame got boring really quickly, the characters had no development at all and at some point the plot just dies. Don't even get me started on the CG's (which were completely inconsistent both in style and quality, they must have used a different artist for the sprites) which were at times genuinely horrifying. It was so bad that I don't even remember anything about it years later, other than it was the worst spend of $9.95 of my life and I'd have felt robbed even if I'd managed to pirate it in the first place. Sorry for the tl;dr, that is a rant I've been meaning to express for years.
>>
>reading the wild catgirl reviews
>start reading other VN reviews out of curiosity
>really wish I hadn't

These people are brutal. The only games that seem to have a tolerated rating are ones I can't stand, too.

Why are there a shit-ton of yuri games coming out this year and people still think they're being treated badly?
>>
>>127598795

It does annoy me when people think it's reasonable to wander into official channels and ask the dev where they can pirate things from, but it was sort of childish of me to pick on you for it.

The CGs were totally drawn by a different artist who was pretty new at the time (she got much better a few years later!).

I did but it was because my dad died of brain cancer when I was a baby. I don't even remember where I got the concept of cheating from. I would say TV but all I watched was Pokemon.

Before we close this thread out and never have to look at We Know the Devil again, I'm just curious if anyone liked it because they thought it was a legitimately good VN and not just because had girls and is gay as fuck?
>>
>>127607673
I remember the first time I played Sims and your character could date/marry/woohoo same sex characters it blew my mind. I called my mom in like "LOOK WHAT I CAN MAKE THESE TWO GIRLS DO" and then they kissed and she was like "yep, I've done that too." and left the room. Good times.

Damn, I found a perfect theme on theme-hunter but the pastebin for the CSS code has been deleted. Is there any other way to get that theme?
>>
>>127608452
Link? I'll take a look around.

To be specific, link to the theme-hunter post, not the theme demo or whatever else.

Looks like the designer removed a few other themes too, what a shame.

Thoughts? Character is from Blackgate, updated artwork for charlie the mothman. What are your initials impressions? I'm always scared of coming into this thread because I make furry trash.

Hard to parse visually without a background because it's so dark

http://kougmi.tumblr.com/thm5 Code link is in the about section.

If the 100% width thing for the banner doesn't work for you, I can probably toss you the CSS to change it.
>>
>>127609298
I like it. Maybe a little bit of color difference for the eyes? Like transparency gradient with brighter/more opaque at the center and fading on the edges? Right now the red circles are just a little blah.
>>
>>127609298
This is probably the point but the black parts and lower part of the body just kind of look like blobs to me.
>>
>>127609431
I think I can figure it out if it doesn't work, I know a bit of css myself. I'm just an idiot at navigating. Thanks!

>I'm always scared of coming into this thread because I make furry trash.

Last time we talked about it, the opinion seemed to be "a shame it's furry trash because everything so far it's really nice" - which is not any worse than others get.

Also Vekk is the hottest.

He's supposed to be pretty dark being a mothman and all and blackgate is pretty dark in general. That is a pretty good point. My thought behind him being so dark is that you only focus on his eyes and that's really the only thing that changes with poses. Also, different character, Vekk.

Best of luck, anon!

I'm currently writing a shortish game loosely based on this. I also plan on dragging in established characters from other old-running mystery novel series' like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Since Doyle and Christie are long since dead I assume they won't object.

Emphasis on "loosely based." I won't be doing any direct copy-pasting from the novel which I've read five times and will probably re-read again to refresh my memory and the characters will be slightly modernized (80s or 90s).

Since it's shorter, I'm doing most of the work for it without much of a team. Better that way, anyway.

Would you read it, /evn/?

That's more or less going off of the concept art and urban legends stuff.

true true. That is kinda the point.

Not you specifically, but if someone's doing a game tumblr that they'll update maybe http://theme-hunter.tumblr.com/tagged/media would help? A progress bar/dividing up what you've done and still need to do would be pretty neat imo.

>Maybe if the game hadn't released unfinished...

What did you mean by this?
>>
>>127610176
I would read to hell out of a 90's/80's mystery novel. Especially if it was like the flip side to american psycho where you're a detective figuring out what's going on, or like se7en.
>>
>>127602657
I liked it because it was my first yaoi VN and one of the first few VNs I ever played, but I'll admit that I may still like it because of my fetish of military uniforms. Yeah, the anatomy is pretty bad, and the story is somewhat dumb, but I still like it to an extent.
>>
>>127610547
It's missing an ending, isn't it?

>>127610294
I just think it's missing a kind of luminescence with the eyes. Like glowing, I guess I mean? I think it would be a little creepier looking than just flat red with slight

These people dont have any mercy. The worst thing is I have no idea what people want. I've seen criticism for game design choices that are clearly stated in the game description

People are crazy, you can't please them all. Best you can do is find a group of people who want what you're selling and try to ignore the nutjobs.

>>
>>127613704
It's like he really couldn't have used the eye dropped to maker the body the same color as the head?

I think the worst part of this is the artist is cheap enough to get some CGs going.

New thread when?
>>
>>127614450
Why don't you?
>>
>>127613704
If you've got the money to drop on sprites that look decent, why in the fuck would you ruin that with your own amateur art?
Like okay if that's your budget blown fair enough. Just don't have CGs.
But if you simply must draw your own, why the fuck would you do it like this? No matter how unskilled you are in assessing what good art is, surely you would be able to tell that this looks like garbage?
>>
>>127613704
I need someone to tell me that this is an elaborate joke and there's no way these are the real CGs.

Please god. Why would you do this?? The sprite art looks nice so why wreck that? I'm a poor ass dev but I can't wrap my head around this at all.

if people followed your broken logic they'd have to gather up all the lesbians and lock them up for insisting that all men need to die/be put in jail/sterilized. none of this is even that bad even though its dumb, I actually knew someone who knew a trans person who (bless their corrupt yet naive soul) that they could pick up more chicks if they were a lesbian.

you'd be surprised how often its a couple of chucklefucks that complete change someones opinion on a topic.
