IMO Uzuki's arc in the anime was a step short. Her arc in the anime was basically her accepting that she really was someone worthy of being an idol, that she WAS an idol.

They should've gone a step further and have her actually do something to stay an idol, to "keep the dream a reality" so to speak. Sure she inadvertently saved her career with S(mile)ING but I was her to actually decide to do something as opposed to either just stumbling on it (like how she saved NG with her smile in episode 6) or due to the encouragement of her friends/TakeP. They Uzuki's journey into becoming a main red will be complete.

As many other anons discussed before, Uzuki is a rather unorthodox Main Red, espescially when compared to other Reds (Haruka, Ai, Mirai, Honoka, Ichigo etc.) in terms of tastes, personality and role.

But within the Cinderella framework of the franchise, Uzuki makes sense as the Main Red, or perhaps more apt to say, Main Cinderella. The crux of Cinderella stories is not the Godmother's magic, but the ash covered girl who refused to break under the stepmother's cruelty and the same girl dressed in old rags who put on the glass slippers against the warnings of the stepmother and ridicule and doubt of others.

One of the harshest truths that hit Uzuki is that Girls don't become idols because they want to shine, rather, its because Girls have something that makes them shine that they are able to become idols. And as Uzuki made it clear in her break down, she knows damn well that she doesn't have that shine.

During the S(mile)ING dream sequence, part of Uzuki's silent monologue asked: "Is it even possible for an ordinary girl who can only admire princesses?". Thus indicating that Uzuki knows her mediocrity and insignificance. Only to be assured by her other self: "Lets believe. We can shine! So let's smile!"

Uzuki is not a leader. She's the symbol that anybody, no matter how insignificant or different, can shine as long as they hold their resolve. Just look at her grandest moment in S(mile)ING, never did the song ever mention that she will shine the brightest nor be the greatest idol, all it promised was: AI O KOMETE ZUTTO UTAU YOOO

Uzuki is not the Cinderella who dazzled everybody in her fine dress at the ball. She's the hardworking dirty girl scrubbing the kitchen floor with no fancy glass slippers, she's the barefoot girl. But in the end, thats what makes her THE Cinderella.

Another anon also pointed out that Uzuki performed in her plain clothes rather than a fancy idol dress just to drive home further the barefoot girl symbolism. Not to mention the clock in her dream world no longer had hands. You can interpret this as Uzuki no longer being worried about the magic spell disappearing as she doesn't need it anymore or that Uzuki discovered magic that is endless. Either are arguably valid interpretations.

And no need to be such a sourpuss. Remove the Flowery Cinderella Fluff and you still have a very solid message that can be applied to life. A person only concerned with self pity doesn't get shit done and only digs their misery deeper. While a person who looks beyond their shortcomings and still pushes forward despite it, will get progress done. They might not end up being the best, but they can definitely enjoy what they do and be happier with themselves. Nothing wrong with giftwrapping this point in prettied up Cinderella anecdotes.

You misunderstood me. I agree with what you wrote.
What I'm saying is that both in-universe, and probably irl, worshiping of pop starlets as idols is silly.
Then again, perhaps that's what idols are, something we hang our search for transcendence on.

I'm still enjoying all of it. But I feel sorry for Uzuki, chasing after a very nebulous dream.
Perhaps though, that's what dreams are, anything to keep you going forward, whichever way it is.
