I did it three times by myself (did slightly different things each time), and will be playing with a friend soon (who's not much of a gamer, but I think she'll love this). That's probably what I'll do for future play throughs, as well. If I have someone else there making decisions with me, I'll get different outcomes, and it'll stay interesting.

Man, I still have yet to finish Earthbound. I'm right after Onett, it's kind of *really* annoying how so many enemies keep ganging up on you, and you just have to repeat the same battle over and over and over and over again, without anything new or interesting being brought to each one.

It gets to the point where I often find myself dying while backtracking, hoping to get health & PP in Onett.

The beginning can be kind of rough, you might wanna get some levels once you get to the second town because the area right after that can be brutal. There's not many difficulty spikes after that though, so you can probably cruise through the rest of the game if you don't run from everything.

EarthBound does really show its age with the battle system, but try to stick with it if you like its kind of humor, because the writing in it is pretty fantastic, even if the story itself is kind of bland.

EarthBound is at its most difficult when you're alone, getting Paula is really where the fun begins. Any time losing party members is when you're in for a bad time

I would agree with you, though Mother 3 has the same problem of having a very meandering start in the first three chapters.

Overall it's probably not as good of a 'fun hero's journey' style thing like EarthBound was, but it's definitely a better story and more emotionally engaging. And there's no denying the gameplay is better by far.

Papyrus would find her, they'd have a short scuffle, and he'd bring her back to town and help nurse her back to health. Sans hates it.

Oh, I'm just not fond of the drastic changes or plot the game has to offer compared to the first two. I preferred the simplicity of the hero's journey which fit in better with the character archetypes and their stats

Lucas being a tank doesn't fit his timid demeanor, Kumatora's tomboyish personality barely compliments her fragile nature, etc. The entire first three chapters are completely unnecessary, Lucas could've been written much better and more engaging, the more depressing atmosphere just isn't as fun and I don't care for it

It's just an issue I have where too much changed and not enough things changed to compensate, compared to the first two installments. I don't think Itoi was as hands-on for Mother 3 compared to the first two either so that might help
