Ulm toppest nation edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

So whats considered an absolute max of map size and/or average province count per player? I know Stalewarriors on Oeridia were at something ridiculous (like 40 provinces per player on average), but what is a sane cap?
>>
>>125522241
15 is normal. Bigger means slower. There's no absolute min or max.
>>
>>125522426
Sorry, there is an absolute min of 1 province per player + 1 throne site.

Speaking of which, what happened to lotus clusterfuck?
>>
>>125522426
>>125522582
There's also an absolute max, but it's very very high. This is mentioned on the dom4mods forum, in discussion for a big map. I don't know what max size is though.
>>
>>125522241
Both of them look sane in comparison to the batshit glory of Latus.
>>
>>125523538

It's funny, Latus was one of the two maps I was looking at (the other being World of Geometry). Was going to see if they would function on Llamaserver, then might try to start a game on one of them, after making sure the maps function (for instance, if you don't alter one of the starts in world of Geometry to be a cave, anyone trying to play Agartha with just make the map bug completely).
>>
>>125523902
there was a game using Latus
it was called flatus
it makes sad us
>>
>>125523902
Make it an all ages game and watch the Ermor/Lemuria alliance win
>>
>>125524215

<All Ages Game>

These maps are big, but they're not Oeridia sized. Even Latus isn't close, more like Archaea sized.

One age would be just fine. Especially because World of Geometry isn't exactly big, its just big for the 12 people that can play on it with the starts still making sense.
>>
Reminder that llamaserver doesn't support All Ages games.
>>
>>125523902
Do it.
Latus is a hilarious clusterfuck.
Just don't go the way of Flatus ;_;
>>
>>125525750

The maker of Latus is a sick fuck. Ulm and Ermor share a cap ring, as do Helheim and Vanheim in the EA. Like what the actual hell.
>>
>>125526271
That's fucking nothing.
Look at all the preplaced sites.
Look at how some nations have entire planes filled with unhidden gem sites all to themselves.
>>
>>125526578

I'm well aware, and is another huge turn off from Latus (trying to balance that would be hellish). But the idea of the planes at least is somewhat thematic to the map.
But Helheim and Vanheims capital literally TOUCH EACHOTHER on the map.

>>125526870

how can I make sure my communion slaves cast before the master? (master has a crystal matrix)
>>
>>125535056
When you are in the scripting screen, the order that the commanders appear in from top to bottom is the order that they will act in.
>>
>>125535136
possible to rearrange them?
>>
>>125535291
No. Commanders act in order of Unit ID, which is set when the unit is recruited.
>>
>>125535341
recruit the slaves always before the master then I guess

annoying but w/e
>>
>>125535637
Actually, unit ID is weird because after a unit that isn't in the HoF or have some sort of rebirth effect dies, its ID gets reused so commanders that are recruited later can still have earlier IDs.
>>
>>125535709
i'd still like rearranging, but from a programming standpoint i can understand the nightmare

>>
>>125570620
EA Mictlan or xibalba.
Mictlan has cheap plentiful bloodhunters with good cap onlies who can summon whatever you want (without boosters?)
Xibalba has even better blood but worse demon summoning capabilities (outside nat'ls)
>>

So LA Mari.

>>125571195
>I'm talking about generic demons, not nationals.
>>
>>125571195
both of those will be summoning nationals, because their nationals are better than the generics. also 'whatever you want' is dishonest as they don't get earth or air crosspaths which are needed for a few.

LA Marignon probably the best for demon summons, Abysia is good, but they like sending horrors more.

>>125573067
What the smaller ones are is important.
What did you script the pretender to cast? D mages have a habit of just spamming skeletons when casting.
What you want is thaumaturgy 4, for Terror, though even Thaum 1 for frighten helps. Morale checks only happen if there's a cause, so the elephants either need to take a lot of damage or a spell has to force them to take a check.
In Thaumaturgy there's also charm animal (to turn them to your side) or mind burn/soul slay for large damage that their crap MR won't stop.

Bogarus has crappy troops and sacreds but diverse and powerful mage communions, so you don't want any bless unless you like B9 khlysts for some reason. it's far from a game ender, but it is a thing that needs to get dealt with.
If it gets dispelled in a few turns, it's not that terrible.
If it's got a 200+ overcast, then basically the caster needs to be killed before it grinds you down.

Utterdark is the more game ending spell unless you're a nation that has zero upkeep, or has switched to just summoning.

Fair enough, but SW isn't really an average game, which is the only reason armageddon has such a major impact. Usually if the game reaches the stage where Wish actually gets cast and isn't used to get SCs or whatever, it's almost over anyway. Because SW is unreasonably huge, you can have a situation where armageddon gets cast and the game still might go on for 100 turns.

But of course, anyone who enters a game like that and expects it to play out like a normal game is starting off on the wrong foot anyway.

>hammers
I don't want Hammers specifically, I also want to be able to forge boots to raise my recruitable E1 into E2 (better for high level stuff in communions, easier Demon Knight summoning, Crystal Coins, Blood Stones). E4 is useful for Harbingers.

>dormant
The dormant is to get the above quicker, and because I'm not sure what to spend the extra points in.

>if you want to stay dormant i would dump heat to make your fire magic better and purchase 2 magic scales and 1 extra production for maximum bully.
Dumping heat for magic and prod is not bad.

What would I need F for, though? Angels of fury look inferior than Harbingers, and by the time I reach Conj9 for Seraphs I figure I should be able to afford a F empower (and I'd get an F boosters either through either Arch or Fallen Angels).
>>
>>125610097
Blood hunting has a lot of common bad events and several of the demon commanders have a bad event where they break free of your control, so misfortune can actually hurt blood nations moreso than others.

You can be comfortable with either heat or cold, given that you have fire magic.
>>
>>125613036
I didn't know that. That's a very valid point.
>>
>>125612843
By "dumping heat to make your fire magic better" he means to improve the potency of your fire mages, not to give fire to your pretender.
>>
>>125612843
>I don't want Hammers specifically, I also want to be able to forge boots to raise my recruitable E1 into E2 (better for high level stuff in communions, easier Demon Knight summoning, Crystal Coins, Blood Stones).

then you can wait 36 turns and get something in return.

>What would I need F for, though?

i am sorry i wanted to say " take heat scales which improve the fire evocations of your mages that will have increased chance of applying burn effects when fighting in your dominion".
>>
>>125613259
waiting 36 turns to break into earth is rough, honestly. It sets you behind on searching, demon knight production if you're planning on using them to front line, and can make you unable to cast critical buffs in a mid game war. I can absolutely see the advantage to getting that 24 turns earlier, especially given that it comes with the added benefit of 20-40 extra gems from hammers.
>>
>>125613259
>take heat scales
I didn't think of that. That's another valid point.

>then you can wait 36 turns and get something in return.
I can still get comfortable scales with dormant. Especially if I follow your suggestion to take Heat (2 or even 3). Also, see >>125613475
>>
>>125613259
Speaking of which, what are the effects of the Heat scale on fatigue, and what's its interaction with fire resistance?
>>
>>125613994
In heat 3 and cold 3 units with no resistance to fire/frost has their encumberance increased by 2. If they have 2 or 3 resist, not sure which, then the penantly is lowered to 1. With 5 resist it vanishes.

Cold and hot scales also affects how likely you are to stop burning/freezing - the formula is in the manual. Heat from Hell/Grip of Winter is better in the right scales too.

Because the function of his magic paths is to ensure access to Storm via boosters (later to turn 1 Fog Warriors) instead of relying on 1 in 4 StR cap-only (that competes with another excellent mage) and Storm Demon summoning skipping 3 empowerments in B, and I'd like those things as soon as possible.

Wait, you're going to use the immoble fountain pretender in *combat*? First off, using pretender to cast spells is so-so, but the big problem is that fountains can't cloud trapeze.
>>
>>125619951
>Wait, you're going to use the immoble fountain pretender in *combat*?
Why would you think this?

I need it to reach A4 to forge Winged Helmets (which Helheim cannot otherwise reach). With one of those, any single one can cast Storm, and the A3 random can cast Fog Warriors turn 1.
B is so I can forge B boosters without having to empower three times. I need that so any Vanjarl can become a Storm Demon summoner.
>>
>>125619454

Both of those come relatively late into the game (although I hope you aren't planing to wait until Blood 9 with storm demon summoning), pretender being dormant is unlikely to benefit you.

Blood communions are a thing. Storm isn't exactly a cornerstone of Helheim either.

>>125619951
No, he's planing to forge boosters, that's it.
>>
>>125621030
>Blood communions are a thing.
Terrible to cast Storm, which you need cast as soon as possible. The max I can get is B1, which means that the mage will pass out for a turn. Storm turn 3 is quite late. I'd have to employ on a B booster, and anyway I'd still be relying on an 1 in 4 cap-only (that competes with the dwarf).

>Storm isn't exactly a cornerstone of Helheim either
You what? The only good out-of-cap combat mage is the A2 Vanjarl. What am I going to do with them if not t-strike/elemental spam?

>later to turn 1 Fog Warriors
Helheim cannot reach A4 (and thus Winged Helmets) with recruitables. Without the Helmets there's no way I can put it up turn1

>Storm Demon summoning
Blood 4 is not late.
>>
>>125620795

Also, what other would I do with a pretender for Helheim? I'm not convinced by an hard bless (classic W9) at all: the sacred cavalry is too costly and a tad underwhelming for the price, the valkyries and the thugs don't need it and you can expand just fine.

>good combat mage
>Vanjarl
265 gold.
For two vanjarls your enemy can field up to 15 stellar cascade casters, five skellyspamers, four thunderstrikers, 3 magma blasters.
Basically, if it comes down to blasting duels, you are fucked. Vanjarls are not a good combat mage and don't recruit them with that goal in mind. They are useable as a thunderstriker, but the impact is not strong because it's nearly impossible to achieve crticial mass.

>What am I going to do with them
Not use them as combat mages. Raiding is a lifeblood of an elf. Other than that they are your only bloodhunter. All at a very high price, you won't be swimming in them.

>Blood 4 is not late.
Blood 4 is not late, but blood economy as helheim is very slow. Your B1 bloodhunters cost 260 gold and your 260 gold blood summoners need a 20 slave item so they can summon one demon at a time. You are in a worse situation than hinnom and hinnom's blood economy is pretty painful and very slow to gear up.

>Helheim cannot reach A4
I'm not saying you shouldn't get booster capability on god, that's a must. The issue is that unlike for example LA Caelum that has same issue, your research is much slower and worse. You aren't hitting an early fog warriors, especially if you take a detour into blood and early bood economy.

>some people said that after some time the only unit that matter is thugs
It used to be true for dominions 3 but it's not quite as true now. Thugs and SCs are still very useful but they're not the only things you want to field at lategame.

In my experience, late game wars don't usually have massive battles because both sides have battlefield clear. There's not much point making a super doomstack if it dies to turn 1 earthquakes/RoS when you actually use it.

That means you tend to have lots of raiding parties and smaller specialized armies, which thugs/SCs are very good at fighting.

>>125635261
I think you can die outright from a bad transformation. Even with the Chalice, you're likely to have your pretender out of action for a few turns while he heals.

You might also get a chassis with poor MR or health, though you can transform again I guess.

Oh, and as far as your goals go - with Shinu, you can amass a crazy number of archers and then cast Flaming Arrows with a Bakemono Sorceror. This is a strong early/mid game army, since your enemies won't have Arrow Fend up yet. Bakemono Sorcerers are actually very versatile mages - they can skelly spam, they can buff up your guys, they can use the Magma line of evocation magic, and water randoms can even throw down acid evocation to break the army for the magma and conventional attack.

How do you use them to expand?
>>
>>125637547
Yeah, but the monolith only has one misc slot.
I want at least two.
>>
>>125637694
Well, for starters I actually take prod on Shinu explicitly for those guys. You don't need to do anything special with your script - Just have them set to fire closest and they'll whittle down the enemies as they approach and then chop them up in melee. This will make indies rout very quickly. If you're up against cavalry, get some of the little guys to eat lance hits, and then the same tactic will still work just fine.
>>
>>125637372
I mainly use yari bakemono and the undisciplined bakemono archers. I thought you can only make very few Dai Bakemonos early so they would easily get outnumbered?
>>
>>125637650
Got it. Sending that + the other gems you asked for.
>>
>>125637935
How many would you be looking at per expansion party, and how many losses do they tend to take per province?
>>
>>125638019
Uh, when you're relying on units with 8 morale, 9 hp, and low protection to tank for you, you're going to need to outnumber just about anything massively in order to win. Short bows also deal only 9 damage, so anything with armor is going to need a lot of arrows to go down.
>>
>>125638261
Yeah, shortbows are pretty shit against anything with protection. Like, even leather armor fucks them over a good amount. Flaming arrows really, really helps archers.

So...the difference between the type of bows is their damage and range right?

Do you use the sorcerer in the early game to give morale bonus? or there is useful spell available in early game?
>>
>>125638996
You'll lose dudes to heavy cav and, surprisingly, heavy infantry. Anything that doesn't rout quickly once it gets into melee (preferably thanks to losses that it took getting there) will be able to hit them back. While they're way more durable than the little goblins, they're not like elite sacreds.

>>125639118
I don't recruit anything other than sorcerers pretty much.
>>
>>125639209
as shinu have some pillage bonus, is the raid/pillage move useful?
>>
Nationgen game when?
>>
>>125644262
when you make one.
>>
>>125640617
Pillage is virtually never useful. You lose significantly more income than you recoup from gold. It is used solely to make land less valuable for your enemies. Raiding serves a similar purpose, with the added bonus that you don't need to be in the province to do it. Raiding the enemy capital can occasionally be good if you can't bust it, but usually that also means that their patrollers will bop your raiders anyways. The only good raiders are flying ones, honestly, since they can actually raid your enemy's rich provinces without being right next to them.

>>
>>125644335
never made one before, but I have hosted. Anything special I would have to do?
>>
>>125644921
not really, it's mostly just gen some fun looking nations post the nations and make the game with the mod.
>>
>>125644921
You need to generate the nations using the nationgen tool and upload the created mod onto llamaserver (and some file sharing place for your players).

It's also expected that you look through the results and do your best to remove anything overly ridiculous before you let people start selecting their nation.

I'd suggest you create a set of random seeds outside the nationgen program, then use those seeds to create a bunch of nations. It makes it a lot easier to add or remove a nation if you need to do so, since you can just change the list of seeds and run nationgen again rather than having to edit mod files.

Remember to make more nations than players so there's a nice variety for people to choose from.
>>
>>125639209
As you mainly hire sorcerers and longbow dai bakemono early, do you have other troop composition for later in the game?
>>
>>125646483
You basically want max sorcerers from every fort until you can't afford them. They're slow to recruit, they're old, and they're expensive but they're still absolutely amazing mages. You want them for evo, skelly spam, buffs, everything.

As far as units and supplementary commanders go, it depends on what you're fighting against. Against stuff with low prot, massed archers with Flaming Arrows is great once you get the research for it. If your enemy is vulnerable to raiding, you can get some bandits. Tengu are pretty cool (though the lack of a bless makes them less good). You can summon up some Dai Oni to make SCs depending on what paths your enemy has. Kappa are terrible and you almost never want to get them, but if there's a nearby UW province with a small number of indies which you can use to recruit other guys to expand UW then you can waste your gold on some of them too. Dai Bakemono are generally just great units (high prot, high melee damage, and a ranged attack to force the enemy to come to you), but they are expensive and sometimes you want other stuff.

Touhou anon here.
I completed a basic framework for an SDM mod for Conquest of Elysium called the Mage Librarian. Your starting commanders are Patchy and China, but you can recruit Sakuya and summon Koakuma early on and Remilia if you have Sakuya. Regular fairies are sorta weak with only a basic melee magic attack, but Sunflower and Maid fairies can do a little magic.

I think for most nations getting some basic level of Evocation should be your first goal.

Honestly, now that I've tried Asphodel, I feel like it's much weaker than either Ermor or Lemuria because of the way that its freespawn is tied to its scales. For other popkill nations, one of their big advantages is that you can dump all of your scales except magic and luck which lets you afford a massive bless or an incredible amount of magic on your pretender. If Asphodel goes for the standard turmoil/growth/luck/magic build, it has a lot less to work with.

If they had a reliable way to amass their sacred undead centaur archers, they could do some really cool stuff with that, but as it is they're in an awkward 'neither fish nor fowl' spot like Therodos, except without Therodos's great diversity and coastal recruit sacreds.

It's certainly not terrible, but anyone capable of casting it can also do Phoenix Power -> Fireball with one gem (or a Jar of Fire), which is superior against most targets early on. Even Bane Fire, which is actually good, isn't -that- great against most targets, since despite high damage and Decay, it still only hits one square while lower-level stuff like Falling Fires hits 3+. Of course, Banefire doesn't drop off as hard in mid- and lategame as fire does, since it doesn't get nerfed by Rain and ignores Fire Resistance.

Both of them are better off against small numbers of elite troops thanks to the higher (untyped, so unresistable) damage and the Decay effect, but on the other hand elite troops tend to have higher MR so they'll resist the Decay more often.

Starting up my first map, hoping to make it both pretty and one of the better maps for gameplay. How many province connections should each cap ring have, and what's a good baseline distribution of mountain/waste/plain/swamp/forest/farmland/cave/ocean provinces?
>>
>>125702080

at least 4, preferably 5 or 6.

1 to 1 to 3 to 1 to 2 to 1 to 1 to .25
>>
>>125702080
>How many province connections should each cap ring have
I'd say 3 is the minimum, assuming none of them are cut off by mountains or rivers. 4-6 is better though.

>what's a good baseline distribution of mountain/waste/plain/swamp/forest/farmland/cave/ocean provinces?
I don't think the exact ratio matters too much, as long as you keep two things in mind:
1) Don't cluster terrain types too much. Try to make sure all players have a good chance to get access to a decent variety of terrain types.
2) Don't overpopulate your map with special terrain types, otherwise you're just defeating the point of having units with more than mapmove 1.

I agree, that wasn't really my point.
IMHO there should, ideally be places where the mm2 can move free, but also places where they'd get choked up unless they've got the right survival. Variety, and changing how movement works depending on conditions is the goal.

Castledocs map has a pretty good example of that, though it's too heavy on rivers.

>>
>>125731935

The nations that get them have better mages to be skelespamming and fireballing with, so generally the role of Dai Oni is to put up big spells that other mages in the nation can't (easily) cast.

If you have enough that you don't need more doing that, having them hold a gold shield, a brand, some reinvig, buff themselves, and then stab people is perfectly reasonable.

Look, I don't like it either. But it points you at the basic spells for each path. There's not really any other good resources for magic use other than scattered bits in some guides and lps - most guides expect you to know that fireball is your goto early evoc for fire, etc, and that Fire Flies is useless.

There's this for blood: http://www.desura.com/games/dominions-4-thrones-of-ascensions/forum/thread/blood-magic-a-primer

Okay, here goes -

Fire:
Conj: Phoenix Power - Every battle on Round 1, unless you need a turn 1 buff in which case Round 2. Use this spell.
Evo: Fireball - Bread and butter early game. Great against massed units and spammable due to its low level
Fire Cloud / Falling Fires - Better than fireball against multiple targets. Cloud is preferred against no prot targets, falling fires against basically any prot
Pillar: Endgame evo
Conj: Fire elementals (lesser for the derps and early game, regular for most instances) are good against weak chaff, like longdead, and extra good against Asphodel's stuff since they have nondamaging attacks which still trigger fire shield. Also useful in sieges since they can go through walls or if you have no front line whatsoever. Don't cast it behind your own army since they have heat auras which make your non fireresistant troops get tired and ouchies.

Spend gems on Lightless Lanterns when you get them, otherwise it's pretty lackluster and you should feel no qualms about using them frequently in fights

Water: Good for crosspaths. Water only is hard
Conj: Water power obviously when you're fighting underwater.
Water Elementals are also dope underwater because of their regen. School of Sharks is also okay, and Shark Attack is great when you have living v living, but doesn't do much when it's elementals and skeletons v elementals and skeletons.
On land, water elementals are good vs massed enemies in cold provinces because they become ice elementals and good against single targets in warm provinces because water elementals have multiple AP attacks.
Evo: Don't bother unless you have crosspaths, honestly. Acid is great, but water alone isn't. Cold blast will hurt, but doesn't have an AoE temp effect the way that fireball does and isn't AP so it does less than it says on the tin. Falling Frost is good against chaff or when the caster is super high level
Alt: Frozen Heart is fantastic, but fairly late in research.
>>
>>125735956
Ice Strike is an decent general-purpose water evocation you missed. Too far in the research tree to be worth aiming for it alone though.
>>
>>125735083

>>125736509
>no water bottles under gemdumps

>>125721653
Don't apologize for that. Whoever was spamming turn resend is a child and should be punished.
>>
Water gems can be spent very efficiently on a whole lot of different items - bracelets are great for your mages, UW breathing gear is probably going to be useful, but Bottles of Living Water at Cons 6 take the cake as being among the best items in the game. At the low, low price of 10 gems you get a high HP bodyguard that will kill assassins that don't bring their own or ensure your assassins can beat their target. A scout with a water bottle is a raider that costs less than any thug and a scout with two will reliably beat 6 PD against most nations. Buy Bottles of Living Water. Just do it.

Air:
The mainline air magic comes online at Conj 2 / Evo 5 and that's Storm, Stormpower, and Thunderstrike. Have a level 3+ air mage cast Storm (you need 2 gems at level 3) and then everyone else casts Storm Power. Augment with Wind Guide when you can get it. Level 2 mages become level 3 mages who can cast Thunderstrike, which is just massively strong.

Later on, you'll get fantastic army buffs in the form of Arrow Fend, Wind Guide, and Fog Warriors. Fog Warriors in particular is a game changer that forces your opponent to bring out counters specifically for it. Arrow Fend hard counters massed archers, which is a strong mid game strategy when supported with wind guide and flaming arrows.

Like the other elemental paths, you have elementals. Air elementals are best used against squishy targets that they can trample. They excel against archers, since they can instantly get to them, but are lackluster against elite melee units. Their ethereal makes them survivable against regular weapons.

Air boosters are expensive and high in path req. Staff of Storms is great for getting your stormpower going faster but is most useful for stopping enemy fliers since it goes up right away. Eagles are the most efficient way of bringing down walls for their gem cost and should be thought of as siege weapons rather than combat troops, but they can harass the enemy backline in a pinch.

>>125736958
water should also include Numbness and Desiccate for battle spells to use before you get to Frozen Heart.
>>
I'm going to make these shorter since 4chan is just terrible for posting primers honestly.

Earth:
Cast Earthpower always unless you are casting round 1 buffs (more common in earth than fire). The reinvig that it grants is fantastic.

Early game good spells depend on what you are fighting. Earth meld is fantastic for how early you get it since it will instantly hold units in an area so that your units can kill them. You should almost always take Alteration early for this, and if you are fighting against individual heavily armored targets (such as Anakites or Lava Warriors), keep going for Destruction which will break their armor and let you get at their juicy innards.

Earth Elementals are great against massed chaff because they trample, and are more resilient than most other elementals.

Legions of Steel in construction is one of the few protection buffs that stacks fully with protection from armor. Cast it on armored units without natural prot like humans. It's far less good on stuff like statues and animals.

Evocation: Like water, it's best with crosspaths. Fire especially is fantastic - the magma line of spells hit hard and in a big area. Blade Wind is okay, but it's basically just turning your mage into a stack of archers and mages that can cast it can usually cast something better.

Strength of Giants in enchantment makes your troops hit harder. With its massive area of effect, it will frequently deal more damage if you put it on your front line than straight evocation will.

Gems: It really depends on what you need. Earth has cheap armor early on and better cheap armor late in the form of Armor of Knights. Dwarven Hammers are basically 2 gems / turn if you use them, so get some early. Boots are efficient boosters and girdles help you cast more spells. Earth Attack is great at killing raiders or hurting the enemy army when it's trying to attack since they might lose a critical commander

>>
>>125737908
Just stick it in as a 'quick primer to magic', if the wiki ever has the problem of too much stuff of this quality then I'd be surprised.
>>
Astral:
Astral is great at doing a lot of different things, but it really depends on what you're fighting. Out of all the things that depend on other things, astral "it depends" the hardest

Thaumaturgy has Astral's single target stuff - paralyze, mind burn, soul slay, and enslave. These are generally single target answers and for the later ones require higher level casters. It also has Communions, but these are their own thing that needs an in depth explanation.

Conjuration has power of the spheres, which you want to cast for your communions when you use them or when you need to get to that one critical level. Because of its higher fatigue cost, it's not auto-cast the way other boosters are.

Light of the North Star is fantastic when you have a lot of low level S mages. It and Evo 5 combine to form Stellar Cascades spam, which is a very effective way of turning a large number of astral mages into a dead enemy army (assuming you have troops to go with them). It is unresistable fatigue damage with a massive AoE and it will put the entire enemy army to sleep so that your guys can slaughter them at their leisure. Rushing this can win you a mid game war. Watch out for massed archers which can cut down your hordes of squishy mages.

Astral/death mages (especially sceleria) like Nether Darts, which is a cheap spell that hits a lot of enemies for a lot of damage.

Antimagic is basically mandatory once you can cast it, since it makes your troops much more resistant to a variety of things that you don't want to happen to them (sleeping, dying, betraying, etc).

Astral Healing has a niche use when your army has become diseased thanks to leprosy, a bane venom charm, or C'tis's dominion, but is not a spell you generally want to cast in spite of how impressive the battlefield healing can look.

Gems are spent on penetration gear, boosters, crystal matrices for communion stuff, Mind Hunt (only after you have Soul Slay researched) and teleporting your high level mages around.

Honestly, this stuff might be helpful for a brand new player, but a magic primer for each nation would be far better because cross paths matter SO much and they also make it a bit harder to organize.
>>125738851
dw, I'm not offended

Death:
The core of death magic is Horde of Skeletons at Enchantment 5. They basically create a stream of infantry that will eventually overwhelm the enemy army if you have enough casters. A line of heavy units to guard and a large number of mages spamming this spell is a solid battle tactic all by itself.

Lower level versions of this spell are good with and against assassins (the key to winning a duel is to bring more friends) and in the super early game if you absolutely need to deploy mages before you have Horde researched.

Their evocation is negated by magic resistance, but Shadow Blast at Evo 5 has a large area of effect which helps make up for that.

Darkness is great since your skeletons have perfect darkvision. It will hurt any evocation you're casting if your casters don't have it, though, and also doesn't work well with living archers.

Ghost Grip and Disintegrate are your two best answers to strong single targets, with ghost grip being like a poor man's stellar cascades. You can beat a lot of thugs with just Horde of Skeletons, though.

Terror and its baby form Frighten are excellent counters to Elephants and decent in general early on when your opponents have armies that can still be scared away.

Wither Bones and Dust to Dust kill undead with no chance to resist. Wither Bones will carve up legions of supaya.

For gems you have boosters at Cons 4, Skull talismans if you have assassins at Cons 0, efficient thug chasses in the form of banes, bane lords, and black servants (who also work as amphibious scouts) and mound kings for cheap leaders. PaleRiders are okay if you're rich or desperate for guys

Both of those aren't really something you can or should script all your mages to cast.

This is a quick guide to give some generically useful tips to get new players started.

Spells which can kill your own army aren't the best thing to start with.

It's not so hard to add a disclaimer that just says "Unless your units are flying or you're fine losing them, make sure to cast fog warriors or mass flight before casting earthquake." I understand it just being an introduction, but those two spells are often defining aspects of a nation's endgame strategy and it's good for new players to know how big a role they play.

Is this to strong for a Natgen game?
it's on a pretty good nation, full Fomorians line up with a sacred Giant, and a line up of fort rec Human mages (90g 1N 1.1? BNDA being their lab monkeys and a 220g 2A2N 1.1?BNDA battlemage)

It's strong, but I don't think it's too strong.

300g for a guy with like, 2a2n3b, or 2a2n2b1d, is okay but not great, even if he has 50hp. He can mistform and personal regen and that's super but he's str and not overly exciting beyond that. I'd take a regular Fomorian King over him most days of the week.
>>
>>125749134
a Fomorian king is also 185g more expensive though.
>>
>>125748720
Serious stuff -
Sleep Cloud is nature's go to Evo for a long, long time. If the enemy army's not immune to it, it's fantastic.

Arrow Fend hard counters massed archers, and that's otherwise a pretty potent mid game strategy.

Behemoths and spirits are like the definition of situational. They're not great in most cases, but very useful for specific purposes.

Swarm should probably be bolded and caps for use with seducers/assassins or raiders.

Dragon's Breath is fucking awful if you have your own troops engaged too and they aren't poison resistant. It's very inaccurate, it kills slowly, and it will naturally target the front line, meaning that it will both have a reduced impact by hitting stuff that's fighting without finishing it off or afflicting it and has a high chance of friendly fire.

You should consider including items, if only because noobs naturally tend towards spending their gems on summons instead of items when items are often better to buy.

That all said, great outline and I hope you take the time to flesh it out since almost all of the spells there are core to any nation's arsenal.
>>
>>125748994
90g 1/4 B1 is quite expensive for a blood hunter, even if you're going to be recruiting a bunch as lab rats anyway.

They also don't have great mages outside that. A2N2 for 220g is way overpriced.

I will admit I didn't consider blood magic but, like their other options, they're not great at it either.
>>
>>125749328
A fomorian king can drop way better, battlefield-affecting spells though.

This guy is a heavy thug in a can, with some gear he's a light SC, but he's not a sailing wailing winds/wrathful skies/mass flight/fog warriors caster.
>>
>>125749335

Hey chum. Mostly this guide is written to be aimed at new players who have no idea what is going on, and therefore assumes these spells are being deployed on the battlefield. I've added Sleep Cloud, and a note to Swarm, and Arrow Fend (Good catch). I'm leaving Dragon Breath in, because it's an evo in nature that hits a few squares and helps take out things noobs tend to struggle with - blessed sacreds, thugs, heavily armoured troops. Sleep Cloud is finicky with placement and keeping people in the same place long enough for it to work, which new players might not be able to pull off. Similarly, Spirits and Behemoths are generically useful summons that are best employed in specialist roles but won't SUCK if tossed up as part of an infantry wall, which was the criteria for summoning spells.
>>
>>125751261
>but won't SUCK if tossed up as part of an infantry wall
spirits DO suck if tossed up as part of an infantry wall, though. They're undisciplined. Behemoths, similarly, are tramplers - you want them doing trampler things. The fact that they don't easily rout makes them friendlier than elephants, but they're fantastically expensive if all you're doing is using them as meat.
>>
>>125751261
>Sleep Cloud is finicky with placement and keeping people in the same place long enough for it to work
It's really not. Your mages will do a fine job lobbing it onto approaching high HP units. It's possible to fiddle with your formations to really optimize its impact, but it's good even when you just toss it into your script and forget about it.

>>
>>125751547

I mean more that enemy units wandering through it in one turn won't have a huge impact. The best uses of it i've seen are when they stand in it for a few turns at least.

>>125751439

The spirits are size 1 and ethereal. Mixed with other units, they take hits instead of things that can actually hurt people, and the paralyze attack can stymie a thug or sacred from time to time. For their cost, they are generally a good choice for a noob to summon - they don't REQUIRE skill to use. Behemoths are somewhat similar - an elephant on easymode. You want to be casting Iron Warriors and Body Ethereal and Gift of Flight on your behemoth, but even if you don't, it will do some work as part of your army, with none of the inherent risks of an elephant. There are a lot of worse choices for a new player to spend their D gems on.
>>
>>125754342
>The best uses of it i've seen are when they stand in it for a few turns at least.
That usually ends up happening anyway. When your troops hit theirs both sides end up standing in mostly the same place until one side breaks and routs.

Just started working on my shameless Valanis ripoff for 11+3 nations, planning on making sure it has a good balance between balanced gameplay and flair.

Starting off by making sure each land nation borders exactly 3 others, the nations you can see with only 2 borders will have a cloudy obelisk near them that links up to the floating islands above where they'll get their third border.

Other than that, going to try my best to not cluster terrain and give each nation 5 province borders and ~12 uncontested provinces.
>>
ded
>>
>>125756934
If those rivers are UW provinces, sailing is going to be really strong.

I think you also need more connections between the islands. The way it's set up now nations might only be able to fight some neighbors through a single province connection.

Just got into this game, I have one major question. When you capture territories is there no way to save their resources? Should I just be buying units for their maximum amount of resources every turn?

I mean elvish woodpipers suck dick but if the resources go away every turn I should be spending them right?
>>
>>125771527
Money>rescources
Also, this is partly due to mages being much more important than troops whilst costing much more gold than rescources, partly due to upkeep costing cold only.
>>
>>125771527
Yeah, resources not spent each turn are lost.
>Elvish woodpipers
If you're talking about indie units, you generally don't want to recruit them unless you need them for a specific purpose, national troops you recruit in castles are almost always better. Recruit mages over troops if you don't have the money to do both, lost recruitment turns aren't that bad unless your troops require a ridiculous amount of resources.
>>
>>125771704
>>125771760

I picked the ulm nation in the op and it says their mages are weak, should I still build mages for them or?
>>
>>125771920
Always build mages, magic is what wins you games and is the main meat of the game. Ulm might have weaker mages and better troops comapred to other nations but they still rely on their mages heavily to actually do things.
>>

If you have forts nearby they soak some of the resources.

>no money, need to utilize your very limited resources properly or run out and die
>few gems, limited paths so limited site searching, have to utilize your pretender properly to get the most out of him
>everyone hates you right of the bat, have to be really good at diplo to not die within the first year

Every other nation is babby tier in comparison.

>>hard to manage, have to separate your units and position them properly on the battlefield for full effect

>very low research, have to understand exactly what you need and when you need it researched based upon the situation
Literally the least magic reliant nation with a suitable bless
>no money, need to utilize your very limited resources properly or run out and die
Every other nations needs to manage recruitment and upkeep. Ermor doesn't
>few gems, limited paths so limited site searching, have to utilize your pretender properly to get the most out of him
Ermor has more gems than other nations; you're retarded. Ermor has massively more points to spend on their pretender because of their scales dump
>everyone hates you right of the bat, have to be really good at diplo to not die within the first year
Because if they don't all gang up on Ermor, Ermor wins.

>>
>>125785435
>tribless lictors
Pffffffft.

I won 2 games as Ermor with a rainbow pretender. Checkmate, meatbags.

But yeah, Ermor is really strong. Hell, even with tribless skelly knights.
>>
>>125785435
>Or just blob all the chaff together and get carried by tribless lictors
Which only work if your opponents are retards. In general you can't survive as Ermor with tribless on normal map because that means your pretender is imprisoned. Without a pretender you start a slower in everything and you have virtually no research at all because you'll be dedicating your gems to getting out lictors.
>Literally the least magic reliant nation with a suitable bless
Again, it's not as simple as you make it out to be and going tribless really depends on luck most of all.
>Every other nations needs to manage recruitment and upkeep. Ermor doesn't
Ermor management in pic above. Also, you need to balance your temples and forts and you have to make sure not to shit up your money making provinces with your dominion if you manage to get some.
>Ermor has more gems than other nations; you're retarded. Ermor has massively more points to spend on their pretender because of their scales dump
Ermor has more death gems, but not much variety at all. Also those death gems go towards summoning mages so all in all they have less than other nations.
>Because if they don't all gang up on Ermor, Ermor wins.
Nope, the longer the game goes, the weaker Ermor gets. Chaff isn't going to cut it with all the undead wiping spells and even tribless sacreds aren't going to stand up to late game magic (and if you go down that path you'll have no magic of your own whatsoever).
>>
>>125785820
>I won 2 games as Ermor with a rainbow pretender

W9 bless for oiorpatas seems nice for expanding, but Sauro doesn't have a problem with that, plus Water is kinda meh. Same-y with an awake expander - not really needed.
Maybe a dormant rainbow with earth/fire/air magic to get those paths normally unavailable for them? It would work well with archers (flaming arrows+wind guide).

This crusade on Ermor is hilarious. Honestly if anything it seems more like containment, since it seems everyone (including myself in this btw) refuses to actually siege an Ermor fort yet.

I can see what you're going for with that pretender. It's great for elemental stuff - boosts into F, A, W, E as high as you can go for whatever you find gems for. Scales are solid too.

Here's some boring analysis because I love theorycrafting -

In the early game, you've got okay expansion and you can churn out a bunch of archers if you have to deal with elves, but given that Sauro lacks wind guide / flaming arrows outside of your pretender (who is a squishy human and therefore risky to use for that purpose) you'll have difficulty making that better. You don't really have a good early answer to giants until your magic comes online either. Your pretender doesn't really help yet, but that's expected for a rainbow.

In the mid game, you have skelly spam and with a small communion you can put up Light of the North Star and spam stellar cascades. This is pretty great, but you actually need your pretender present on the battlefield for his paths to help your guys out. He'll be able to do a lot of neat stuff like arrow fend to keep your squishies safe from arrows, flaming arrows to give you some offensive power from behind your skeletons and to kill armies that are put to sleep, and so on. So that's pretty cool, but as I mentioned earlier risky. You're most likely still going to just have him site searching at this point, though, since he's the only guy you have with air / earth / fire. You can easily spend 20 turns doing this, which is kinda sad for a pretender and takes a long time to pay off.

Air doesn't really have summonable mages until Fairy Queens and Elemental Royalty. Without nature on your pretender you'll never get the former and you'll need to have your pretender site searching relentlessly and get lucky to get enough gems for the latter. Or you can just get lucky and find some indies.

Earth is easier with troll kings, but that's also expensive and your pretender is not only the only caster for it, but also your only site searcher (cont)

No amount of AI battles can prepare you to MP.

It's like learning how to swim. You just got to dive into the water and either drown (most likely drown) or swim.

>>
>>125795302
Join a MP game, and when you lose, ask the winner about stuff. Live communication and experience will give you much more than guides and AI battles.
>>
>>125794827
Don't bother with actually fighting the A.I, use single player to practice expansion and to get a general gist of how your nation works(what spells to research, what scales works best, is taking a bless worth it yes/no etc.)
The A.I is fucking retarded and In no way a good practice for multi player.
Once you feel comfortable enough with your nation try out a newb game.
>>125795302
Stop doing that and try joining a multi player game.
>>
>>125794904

As funny as it would be to throw 200+ Maeneds as Ermor, I doubt it would accomplish much.

That said, I did attack an Ermor province this turn, just not a forted one with gobbs of undead in it.

I won't attack Agartha again so long as Ermor is alive (undead, whatever), and so long as he doesn't start eating someone else.
>>
>>125795302
Reading nation guides and AARs really helped me understand what makes a viable strategy and what doesn't. But Dominions is a highly subjective and situational game, so make sure that you don't just copypaste their strategies.

(continuing my rambling)
Getting air or earth up for fights can get you some fantastic buffs, but this won't come up until very late in the game thanks to the gem requirements, but if you don't get beat up in the early to mid game then you'll have a ton of research thanks to your cheapest-in-the-game researchers in magic 2 (It seriously might even be worth dropping a money scale to get this up to 3 thanks to just how dirt cheap these guys really are. I mean wow).

Later on in the game, you're going to run into RoS, EQ, Firestorm, and other things which are unkind to massed squishy human mages. It's going to be helpful to have thugs that can bust through that for you, but fortunately Sauro's native paths can handle that with death summons. You have wraith lords or liches for heavy thug duties and bane lords for cheap ones, and with native nature and water access you can put the ever generic thug gear on them and have a good time. Your pretender helps with this by giving you air access for winged shoes, so he's actually helpful here.

For magic phase movement, you don't have a lot outside of witch kings casting Stygian Paths, and that's both expensive and later than you'd like. This can potentially be a problem since you can't bounce into provinces for checking for RoS/EQ stuff very easily. Air Queens will help if you can get them, but again that requires some luck to get the gems needed and you'll have to beat out nations with native air that might be going for them.

You don't have remote attack spells for dealing with raiders (grr elves) until extremely late game death magic, and seeking arrows / earth attack on your pretender (or stuff what your pretender can summon). The pretender does help here, but like a lot of the stuff mentioned already you have to juggle pretender turns to actually get use out of it. The fact that he's busy isn't a bad sign, but it does make the fact that you need to waste so many of his precious turns searching a bit painful.

Sauro can actually natively summon Fairies. They can forge every N booster except treelord staff natively.
>>
>>125795752
Late game your pretender's contributions basically amount to any elemental globals you can put up or elemental royalty that you can summon. That's pretty decent, actually, and you can pivot based on what gems your lands happen to be rich with.

So that's what you get out of this strategy. Here's what you're going to be missing out on -

Your pretender doesn't shore up Sauro's early vulnerability to getting rushed. EA has a lot of nations with very strong sacreds, some of which will basically just be able to expand through you since everything that you're fielding is basically just slightly better indy stuff.

Sauro natively has D4 (very rarely D5) and many astral mages with no high astral units. Having a high astral pretender can help out with both of these things, both by forging boosters or banners of the north star and rings to turn your D4 witch kings into tartarian summoners. Tarts can also be acquired natively if you get the death artifacts, but it's nice not needing to get lucky with artifact acquisition or feel pressured to rush that in your research in order to get such a strong end game option.

Sauro also natively has N2 (very rarely N3) which only boosts to N3. If you find water, you can use naiads to get to N3 and armor of thorns+ a vine mace to get to N5 which gets you fairy queens. This is fairly expensive in gems given that you have only W1, though, since you'll need a staff of elemental mastery to get that last point in water or a water empowerment. Having astral/nature or high nature on your pretender makes this much easier.

You have a little bit of blood, but you're most likely just going to be using that for sabbathing witch lords into your communions. Having only 1/4 warrior sorceresses capable of blood hunting or a 395 gold cap only StR mage doesn't really make big blood great, but I've seen a sauro build with blood 4 to try to leverage this into some late game stuff (he got run over by vanheim before he could put it into use)
>>
>>125797301
>>125797308
I'm retarded, you can use armor of thorns + a thistle mace on an Enarie to get a moonvine bracelet, and then put all three boosters on an N2 warrior sorc or witch king to get faeries.
>>
>>125797308
Anyways, closing TLDR -

It gives you some more options, but only if you can spare your pretender for a long time site searching to unlock them. Your early game is still weak and your mid game is likely going to amount to what sauro has natively anyways. Your late game is where your pretender can actually do stuff, but you still need artifacts or incredible luck to get tartarians. You don't have a great way to beat up RoS casters without queens of air or lucky remote attacks. Your mobility magic is still just stygian paths (which is great but expensive and uses up the gems that you use for all your other late game stuff)

I've never seen Sauro win a game myself, but your pretender is totally reasonable if you can survive the early game. Good luck

Essentially troll kings work well or any E mage with decent HP who self buffs first. Also soul slay from a large enough communion with masters with Pen boosters (assuming it's a monolith and therefore not mindless) Banefire from enough mages would work, T strike too, pretty much anything AN.
Anything that does large DoT works as well, massive numbers of Barbarians, massed flaming arrows wind guided cheap xbows. Pretty much anything massable that can fire off big hits.
>>
>>125803282
Air elementals.
>>
>>125804592
>>125804313
Thanks for the help. I've already tried some of them, but air elementals and massed barbarians are both accessible and they should actually work.

The long ranged spells, I've found, don't hit often enough to work and massed flaming crossbows have only been dealing chip damage. I'll try the soul slay thing (it's a Monument, and I have a lot of S mages that I can communion up) and also bring along a bunch of barbs and some air elementals to beat it down.
>>
>>125805785
Actually, looking at barb stats I'm not sure if they'll help. It has 32 protection before the earth magic bonus and barbarians hit for 21 with mauls. The air elementals should work, but I'll need to summon a lot of them since it will kill some of them with astral spells, I imagine, and it has a massive HP pool to get through.
>>
>>125805970
You can summon them during the battle for 1 gem a pop. Just bring enough Air mages and hand them a couple of gems.
>>
>>125771156
don't forget they have mundane research, so they're probably using death and blood to figure out magic.

Man some of these nations are wack.

Like Helleene. At first glance they're shit. No real magic beyond Astral and Earth (which are good paths, but the lack of diversity hurts). All their troops are the exact same overpriced, unshielded, lightly armoured size-3 unit with just a different melee weapon.

But then I realised that literally all of their units are tramplers. Even the mages. Which doesn't exactly make them good, but I can't help finding that hilarious. You go to war against an army of these fucks and expect a decent fight, but then all they do is just charge straight ahead and run you over.

you can also fix the position of your mages and have them attack first to get closer, so they will hit often with precision 1-2 spells and will be able to use all the annoying 25 range spells.

Use Ivy Kings or animists with ivy crowns. Don't summon vinemen unless it's for free with that artifact.

The draw to vine ogres is their HP density - they WILL draw evocation. Put them in a spread line formation and keep your real troops spaced out in front or behind it and your enemy's spells will be severely mitigated.

Jesus, that's angry. I agree that Rejakor was wrong about the strength of horror spells and his list was incomplete and a wee bit wrong (spirits and dragon's breath lol), but it was infinitely better than the crock of shit that preceded it and an okay place to get started.

I just found an issue with unit ids for Qurgya at the very least (they get the charioteers crone added in) so please check the nation against it's roster when you submit a pretender and let me know.

>>125818715
Honestly, I like Crone mod and love nationgen, but trying to combine both is asking for problems. My advice is to just copy over the spell section from Crone mod and leave all of the unit / weapon changes alone.
