Not sure if you're in this new thread, but:
honestly, the reason that I personally do reader insert is because it's what popular and what gets read. People avoid OC fanfiction, probably bc most of it is shit and also bc for a lot of people self-insert is a lot more satisfying. Writing in second person actually really sucks, but if you actually want people to read your things and maybe give you some sort of critique on your writing, it's what you have to do (in the erotica/romance genre, anyway).
I also write it because I have a huge hard on for a fictional character and love self indulgence, but that's besides the point.

Well for whatever it's worth I agree with you, especially how it's not conducive to good writing skills. It's not only disproportionately likely to produce low-quality cringe due to the inherent limitations but unfortunately it's what's popular for this fandom, which increases the disproportionate quantity of badfic. Kind of a shame too, at least third-person mary sue fanfiction is amusing in a so bad it's good kind of way.

the only real universal tip (and every writer will tell you this, always apologetically) is write a lot/read a lot. keep grinding your face against the work and you will improve, despite everything else. doesn't matter what you're doing or what genre it's in, write a lot of it and read a lot of it and always compare your work to that of others and try to gauge where they went right or you went wrong or vice-versa, and eventually your intuition will improve and your language will smooth out

this goes double if you want to go into erotica or romance, i lurk in a couple of those communities (mostly because i'm dumbfounded at the money some of them make) and a lot of those people churn out a novel every other week, it's insane. obviously they're edge cases - they view themselves as marketers and manufacturers rather than sensitive artists, which is presumably why so many of them are able to actually make a living at what they do - but they follow the same principle as everyone else. write a lot, read a lot

in more personal advice, i'd advise to watch out for easy cliches you might find yourself leaning on and correct them as needed. writing is a tiring process, and as the brain gets fatigued it tends to go for rote or obvious lines or images as a way of limping to the next sentence. staying aware of your own repetitions or weaknesses in your prose will eventually give you an "ear" for the rhythm of a sentence and help you identify mistakes even as they're happening.

and always edit. famous agent line - "everyone makes a first draft. then they write." the editing process is where most of the work lies and it's one of the bits that's hardest to improve. give yourself a minimum one-day cooldown on anything you do, read it back over, and correct as needed. some people recommend reading it out loud to get a feel for clunky lines, and while i've never done it myself it's certainly not bad advice.
