Paladins is free, unlike Overwatch and Battleborn, which are B2P.

Paladins has the card system, which allows your character to level up as the match goes on with varied bonuses you can select. You can build your own decks for each character so you can better guide your progression.

It's freely playable right now, and because Hi-Rez is at the helm, they promise regular updates.

The style is pretty neat. It doesn't currently have the raw presentation value of Overwatch, but for what it is, it looks nice and has a bit of a style to it.

It's not really a MOBA, since there's no minions or lanes. The main mode, Siege, involves one of three capture points randomly activating, which you need to capture in order to summon a siege engine that will push towards the enemy's base and work towards destroying the three gates therein.

Like it or not, games live and die by the publicity they get, and with the iron curtain Motiga has around Gigantic, people can't get hyped for the game because they don't know what it looks like or what it's about. You can only release so much promo material before you need to get people playing the game publicly and showing it off.

Paladins belongs to Hi-Rez, so there's automatically cross-pollination with those who play SMITE, which is a pretty sizable crowd. It's already working to position itself as the F2P alternative to Overwatch, so I think the game can carve out a good niche for itself.

Was, yes. Considering this is a sci-fi/fantasy hybrid setting, it wouldn't be surprising. Now they made Zigs a regular bird in-game, even though it still has a metallic screech. No art assets are concrete, so this may change again in the future.

Because that worked so well for Global Agenda and pic related. Yes, I know they reopened development on Ascend. I'm still salty.
Though, they released Smite at the peak of the MOBA fad, and it's still doing well despite playing third wheel to LoL and DotA. If the subgenre takes off and HiRez doesn't fuck something up in making their game one of its frontrunners, I can see Paladins doing quite well now that I think about it.

Eh, I might give it a go. I'm just cynical because this subgenre is shaping up to be the next industry/ESPORTZZZ darling/market saturator, which is an admittedly shitty reason to dislike a particular game. Thanks for the responses.

That's the game's niche, and they revel in it. Nothing else can say they're the #3 MOBA in the world behind LoL and DotA, and no one has unseated them. In effect, SMITE completes the trifecta. Paladins is positioning itself in a similar position, as one of the biggest contenders against Overwatch.

From least to most moba. Paragons announce was well received, and that hype'll carry to closed beta launch, since it's soon.

I think Overwatch's hype is deflating massively, when it was announced people really wanted to like it because there weren't really many shooters on the market. I think it's merge between shooter with abilities is odd. In a shooter I am far less tolerant of I-Win buttons than I am strategy games. I can't say to myself after Lina one shots me at level 6 in overwatch "Well, she'll fall off lategame atleast."

Overwatch'll have a decent launch, but it'll bleed like crazy two months post.

I know that if 2 competent teams end up against each other, the first siege engine victory does not decide the match at all, especially if it was a close contest,

The only criteria that means defeat at first capture point = Everyone comes 1 by 1 to feed a kill at least 2 times each without the enemy team conceding more than one or two deaths.

Wipeout first point victory where one team kills the entire enemy team instantly and takes the point does not mean certain victory as they're usually still on one card, although they do have an advantage.

Long drawn out contests where each team was on relatively equal footing means that the team that won the siege engine won't be particularly far ahead.

2 or 3 in a row tends to mean defeat though... although I have had comeback games from that because team held together or I got ridiculously fed and kept the team in the game.

Also I recognize the names that complain on the forums about patch 0.9 to be those who are immensely bad at the game and the players I have a habit of steamrolling. They also complain and bitch at their team.

That's lighting tricking you, if you look closely the back part of his shin is actually a lit up part of his trousers, half of it anyway, making it look like the same color as his tail, that and the folds in his trousers are being pushed forwards due to the way the model has been rigged.

Not only that, his 3D model rigging is not broken into multiple parts. meaning that his animation set really says "No, not digitigrade". Along with the fact his hands are pretty much completley humanoid - no silly pawpads, no stupid looking foxhands which make you wonder what the fuck an opposable thumb is even doing there or how it would work.
They're just human hands... well human hands with fur.

We don't know how ranked itself will work. All we know is that Constructed is the ranked mode. From one of the preview videos, you'll be building a 15-card deck - ostensibly 3 of each rarity; basically, you will see every card in your deck as you level through a match. This means that barring the cards available to you, you have no excuses whatsoever when it comes to your build.

Anyone else feel like the siege engines are a little overpowered?

It feels like the majority of defeats I've seen since I started playing were from the siege engine soaking up all the damage from my team and still taking out the vault door.

That's because for all your time focusing on the siege engine, you're not focusing on the players who are also damaging the door. For the first two gates, the siege engines and players contribute relatively equally, but for the vault itself, player damage overtakes siege engine damage as priority goes. Yes, you have to burn down the siege engine, but if you can help it, you should take down the players.
