If Underworld and Harry Potter could exist then so could Eartheros or whatever. This definition is arbitrary even by pedant standards.

Should my first play through of witcher 3 be death march, or should I just play on normal?

I've played both 1 and 2 on the hardest difficulty, but usually on my 2nd play of the game. I've heard that witcher 3 isn't really great for a 2nd play through, so I'm torn between playing death march or normal.

That's what I wanted to know essentially. I'm on death march now, and I'm still early on, but I'm essentially having 0 issues. 99% of the time nothing even lands a hit on me with the roll and dodge mechanics.

Will just stick with deathmarch then.

Speaking of which, I just bought W3 on sale, which is why I just started. But is Hearts of Stone worth it? Is it like a new game, or does it continue right after you finish the main game?

Like do you keep all your equipment and stuff moving into hearts of stone?

Hearts of Stone is definitely worth it. It's part of the main game rather than a separate thing so you keep your equipment. In theory you can do it at any time, but level wise it's best to do it after the second time you go back to Kaer Morhen. I won't say more because spoilers.

I picked up TW3 today. Never had a PC but always wanted to play Witcher and Stalker series, I can finally make one happen now that I have a PS4.

So, what can you tell me? I watched the vid linked in the OP for noobs on Witcher lore. Should I just go in completely naked? So far the minimap seems take away from the depth of the world. Can it be turned off?

Also, yeah, movement took some getting used to. Combat is decent...dunno what the fuss is about. Wish Geralt would do some more basic, heavy swings instead of hopping around all the time.
>>
>>123915262
>Wish Geralt would do some more basic, heavy swings instead of hopping around all the time.
Strong attacks?

>Should I just go in completely naked?
You shouldn't, but you'll be fine if you do. The game does a decent job at trying to introduce everyone, though you won't always grasp past motivations. I can understand not wanting to pause, read the books/play the previous games right this second. Just ask any lore/story related questions here and we'll sperg out on demand.

>What are the rituals they go through to become Witchers?
The big one they call the Trial of the Grasses. It's basically a concerted and usually lethal effort of magitech, using organic mutagens, viruses, and spells to alter them. The game will go into it a lot more later on.

>And do those rituals extend their lifespans?
Dramatically, yes. Geralt is 90-100. Vesemir is probably around 300, and is the only ne that really look old. No maximum lifespan is known because witchers pretty much always die violent eaths.

>If magic is a manifestation/manipulation of chaos, does that make it and its users inherently evil?
No. The preacher in the intro is a religious fanatic. It is powerful though, and as such is inherently dangerous, like anything useful.
>>
>>123916278
Pretty cool, thanks. I want to dive into the novels now. Are they decently translated or originally written in english?
>>
>>123916015
Witchers go through a process called the Trial of the Grasses. Prior to this point, they're at a peak of physical conditioning and training, but still children. They're given extremely potent elixirs that completely fuck up their body, and mutagens are applied such that the body begins to mutate around them. On top of that, various stabilizing spells are used to guide the process as the body basically rewrites itself. It takes about a week, most of which sees the young boys in comas. 7 out of 10 children die in the process. Those that survive end up with inhuman speed, reflexes, strength, regeneration, eyesight (including in the dark) with cats/snakes eyes, an extreme tolerance to poison, near-immunity to all disease, and sterility. Side effects are possible, such as Geralt's white hair (and Coens red-laced eyes. He died prior to the games).

No mages are left who know how to guide the process, and thus no new Witchers have been created in decades. The healing factor involved in the mutations extends their lifespans dramatically - nobody knows how long because no Witcher has died of old age, but Geralt is around 100 and Vesemir 300+.

The first five of them have decent official translations. The novels are of Polish origin and best in their original languges, but the official translations begin serviceable and end genuinely good as you get further in.

The last two are fan translations though and kind of hard reads. I still recommend the series despite that if you're at all into fantasy, though you may have to wait on the last two books.

They have some official/fan translations, which are of... varying quality. Still worth reading imo, though the books definitely get weaker through the series.

The first two books are collections of short stories about Geralt, which serve to build up the world and characters. From there on, it's a set of novels that carry on a single plot.

One of the translations' prose isn't too bad compared to the official version but the dialogue killed it for me. It's really clunky and unnatural and bad, plus everyone sounds the same. Mostly just crippling personality flaws. Also in the books at least a prepared mage will absolutely destroy him. But that's less the case in the games.

He's actually kind of a social retard a lot of the time.

I'll remember this impression from a newcomer the next time someone says Ciri is too much of an OP Mary Sue for a game though.

>Is the Wild Hunt explained further in the books
Yes, as well as in the previous game, TW2 especially. It will be explained again in this game though. I'll just tell you because Geralt already knows at this point: they're a highly magically advanced race of elves from another universe that can project themselves between worlds as wraith. They come in person, albeit in lesser numbers due to the power required, for really important missions where they need their full range of abilities.
>>
>>123918980
Good to hear, as an all around ultra badass would get boring to watch or read about rather quickly.
>>
>>123919016
>Is the Wild Hunt explained further in the books
Yes, extensively.

To summarize, the Wild Hunt are the Aen Elle, asshole elves from another planet (Aen Seidhe are the elves on the Witcher world) who have the power to move (at a small scale) between worlds to do spooky shit. Skull helmet dude there is their King, Eredin.

I can go into book-spoiler-tier detail if you want.

He only pretends to be a huge badass. He's actually a neurotic moralizing pseudo-intellectual softy. Especially in the books. The games get this across less well, since especially by the third one a lot of his character development is already done, and we lack access to his inner monologue.

>Are they avenging the elves' decimation feom humans, reconquering the continent, bloodthirsty, or a combination?
They're just huge eugenics practicing imperialists. Eredin himself, the current King of the Wild Hunt and leader of the Aen Elle, is also the warrior-king type that likes to lead from the front, go on raids, and look for good fights.

I don't think they really care about the Aen Seidhe all that much. Probably think they're degenerate weaklings for losing to humans. The Aen Elle eradicated all the humans they encountered on their own world and regularly raid human worlds for slaves and souls.

>>123919447
>>
>>123919198
Geralt is a top-tier swordsman (though not the best fighter in the books, as there is one character that slaps his shit unbelievably hard) and a good Witcher, though not the greatest. As said, any top-tier mage would wreck him 1v1.

However, his extreme distance from the world and desperate attempts to stay neutral in the face of issues has led to him deadening himself a lot. As a result, he handles social situations poorly because he can't handle his emotions. He's very similar to Yennefer in this regard, and the books place a lot of weight on the fact they're both hopeless at relationships. Through the books, thanks to Ciri, the two of them grow as people a lot and Geralt becomes far more normal.

>>123919423
They see humans as irrelevant. They used to have total world-walking powers, and the current world of the Aen Elle was a human world until they genocided the fuck out of them and seized it for their own. They have similar plans for all worlds, but lost the ability to warp across worlds en masse. Part of the reason they're fucking around in other worlds is to reclaim that power.

>So the Wild Hunt is an anniversary type hunt, a person, a squadron, or???
The Wild Hunt is the human's name for the roughly yearly cavalcade of wraiths they see racing through the sky and blame for all manner of disappearances and other unsavory incidents. Many scholars insist it's merely a weather phenomena, but as Geralt knows, they're incorrect.

The Wild Hunt itself is just the spectral progression of the Aen Elle's elite cavalry division, the Dearg Ruadhri ("Red Riders") projecting itself into possessed wraiths as an easy but imperfect method of reaching other universes.

>>123920062
They're the main adversary for this game but there are many other unpleasant agencies in the multiverse, human or otherwise. You'll encounter a few in this game.

The main antagonist of the books was actually an obscenely powerful human mage named Vilgefortz, though the Hunt made a number of appearances.
>>
>>123920062
Hard to say. The Witcher story is very much a story of Geralt (and by extension, Yennefer and Ciri). So the antagonists are those that pose a threat to them rather than those that appear as a grand evil, as per typical RPGs.

The Wild Hunt is definitely at the top of the list as they have a personal interest in Geralt and Ciri, but a number of others (the wizard Vilgefortz was the #1 dangerous motherfucker in the books, and Philippa Eilhart is not a good person) are sinister too.

I suppose it's hard to measure because while the Hunt probably has the worst intentions, they're also the most distant and least able to directly cause problems - but they're always displayed as an extreme threat.

As far as sheer sinister entities, there's at least one much more sinister force in TW3 alone, just not in direct opposition to Geralt.

So does level not mean much in this game? I'm in velen, already did a few quests, and I'm only sitting at halfway through 3.

The quest xp seems to be mostly trash, except for the main quest. And killing enemies doesn't seem to yield much either. But I'm having like quests that are marked as 6-12 thrown at me constantly. How the fuck would I be that level at this point?

I mean I'm on death march, does that affect experience gains or what?
>>
>>123927871
You actually end up overleveled pretty quick if you do all the sidequests/contracts that you can find. You're meant to pad out the main quests with them.
>>
>>123928782
I've been doing them. I did them all in white orchard, and like 4-5 in velen so far. But I can't seem to find anymore, because everything leads to a pack of enemies that is level 9+, which is nearly impossible to deal with on death march at level 3, because you can't hurt them.
>>
>>123929318
Huh. After all that, I would expect you to be higher than level 3. I think there is some degree of slower xp on Death March, but I don't remember it being that severe when I played it.

I have no hints besides keep exploring the areas you can, I guess. Level is important as enemies much higher than you will ruin your day
>>
>>123929998
Fuck I don't know what it is, and why I'm getting such bad xp. I made sure to do absolutely everything in white orchard, and even checked online just to make sure, because I feel so under leveled.

I'm really confused as to what the fuck is going on.
>>
>>123930141
Hm. Random thought, is your game patched fully? I vaguely recall some issues early on - but nothing gamebreaking.
>>
>>123930585
I believe it is. Weird thing is, I just looked. I don't actually seem to be receiving any xp what so ever, for enemies I kill. I'm 3, but I'm handling 7s quite easily, but not getting any xp at all for it.
>>
>>123930909
Enemies don't give much xp in this game, but I don't think that should be happening. Well, as long as you can keep progressing, no big deal. Do those lv7s show up as green names, or red? Enemies are basically sorted by green (around your level), red (overleveled), and red with a skull (you're gonna get fucked)
>>
>>123931518
Yeah, I'm literally receiving 0 xp for kills that are marked as regular red. And the last mission I just did that was marked as 7, gave me exactly 20 exp (wild at heart). That can't be right, something has to be wrong with my game or save.
>>
>>123931781

GTA V open world > Witcher 3s

Does anybody argue this? Witcher 3 is the superior game imo but as far as open worlds go how can you even compare the two? GTA V is literally all about its open world

Is GTA V that good? Not played it.

Witcher 3 is amazing, nothing even comes close in it's genre. It makes Skyrim seem terrible, rather than just average.

Hi! :3

Witcher 3 is a pitiful RPG, good game (excellent game) but as far as RPGs go it's bottom tier watered down to the core. Skyrim is literally more of an RPG.
>>
>>123981927

Eh, Dunno about Skyrim but I definitely disagree with the notion that Witcher 3 even comes close to being the pinnacle of RPGs and I definitely think it's totally streamlined as far as RPGs go.
>>
>>123982454
Skyrim has character creation and plenty of choice (albeit badly done), its more of an RPG. Not that I'm slagging off the Witcher but Skyrim is literally more of an RPG

Reminder that Planescape: Torment is lierally not an RPG because it doesn't have character creation, the choices all lead to the same place in the end, and there's really only one viable way to play the game (wizard with high int and wis)

Skyrim is literally more of an RPG than literally Planescape: Torment literally.

They'll give it to Ashly Burch. She may even deserve it, I don't know. Haven't played that game. But it makes a better story and they're unlikely to give that game anything else besides best indie game, and they HAVE to give that one awards to be progressive journalists.

Alright you louts, listen up. There is a single tried and true method to catching witches.

1. Procure a long, bent pole and stick it in a prominent place with good visibility. Forest clearing, town square, what have you.

2. Place upon the top of the pole several large tufts of cat hair.

3. Gently pour a half quart of witcher pheromones on said cat hair.

4. Wait till midnight of the next full moon.

5. When the witch or witches invariably appear, approach them with dimeritium shackles in hand. Remember to carry on your person a turtle tone to nullify their witch craft.

Follow these instructions and verily I say to you, you will catch your witch.

Women like Ciri, Milva, or Ves could castrate anyone posting on 4chan with one hand tied behind their back in all of five seconds. But I doubt most of the mid tier sorceresses are remotely physically formidable or capable of overpowering even a somewhat out of shape man without magic tbqh.

>>124012373
They did a good job with Yen above all else IMO. She sounds exactly as I imagined her voice in the books. Strong, confident, elegant, flirty, and with a temper.
>>
>>124012990
Yen, and Dijkstra basically both sound exactly as I imagined them.

Ciri does not because for some reason she had a little girl voice in my head all the way through the series even when she was 15-16.

Denise Gough is also a couple of other characters in the game that sound completely different from Yen though, which is why I think she's the best. Emotional range, vocal range, subtlety, accents. She's got it all. The lady that does Philippa is also very good, for the actresses.

For the men, Zoltan, the Bloody Baron, and the dude that does Morkvarg both give outstanding performances on an emotional level. As has been mentioned Gaunter O'Dimms VA is great at being slimy and intimidating at the same time. Olgierd makes a dude with a heart of stone actually sound interesting. And as much shit as I give him and as much as I think his nomination for that award is undeserved, I do have trouble imagining any voice but Doug Cockle's as Geralt.

Everything before it but after starting the ending sequence though... Enhanced Edition save us. Compare that to the pre-battle buildup at Kaer Morhen, with the party, planning and general chatter.

Heirarch Hemmelfart is not a subject of King Radovid though and is presumably not happy about moving from being a partner to a subordinate.

Also it was the crime bosses that were going to make it rough, and the only thing that changed on that front was the one Radovid had in his pocket died.

>>
>>124018327
They had abandoned it, true, but that doesn't mean they weren't actively looking for opportunities to make it happen. Novigrad's easier than Oxenfurt for that.

On top of that, Djikstra intends for Redania to win the war, and allowing Redania (not necessarily Radovid) to move into Novigrad peacefully before Nilfgaard can is in his overall interests.

Also Vincent Meiss used to be in the game, bet he'd have been a potential recruit. Sile too probably, since she used to be labelled as a major character.

I wish CDPR had 120 million dollar budget and somewhat better impulse control to implement all this instead of the overly long Novigrad section and 10,000,000 sidequests.

Oh well, still one of my favorite RPGs.

Also should have made an appearance, especially since he's referred to be name in HoS

>Do you even roleplay Geralt?
Geralt doesn't fuck as many women in the books as he does in the game. He's also only unfaithful when he's actually in a committed relationship once and it's treated as a big deal.

>She shows up in the game if you're an idiot and spared her, but dying in prison
The early leaks implied they used to have bigger plans for her.

TW2, though, is basically whore country. You might as well fuck everything in sight.

Only once that we know of, to be fair, and he was comfortable hiding that fact.

The games also have less than it seems imo (barring TW1) - Cynthia is a case if you said you wanted to be with Triss, and the TW3 characters all depend on what's going on at that point in the game

I'm not mentioning minor non-character encounters because, well, yeah. That's an RPG for you though.

I disagree. His characterization is a determination to reunite with Yen as of the end of TW2 and Yennefer's clearly into it in the prologue.

>>124024227
That's because Geralt is a social retard. He's still trying to get back to where they were though and you don't do that by fucking random whoes.

>though it depends how you play Geralt
He acts at least a bit into her no matter what you do tbqh. I mean there's a reason you'd see Trissfags complaining about Geralt flirting with Yennefer at Skellige after committing himself to Triss. The game pretty much treats their relationship as the default condition and it makes anything else feel kind of odd in context.
>>
>>124024415
It was really stiff and poorly delivered desu, devoid of all the context that made the similar speech work in the books.
>>
>>124024124
Except for the part where she said she didn't seek out Geralt specifically because he was banging Triss

We know Yen and Geralt are chaotically attracted to each other and have acted tender even while not getting back together (Sword of Destiny). In-universe characterization and reactions are too much evidence, Yen and Geralt aren't a committed, guaranteed thing until Last Wish. Up to that point, Geralt ends up alone/picks Triss rather than trying to get both.
>>
>>124024436
Yennefer just gets mad that you picked Triss over here. Yeah, you could argue that he left her for Triss, but she doesn't interfere in the same way as the threeway scene.

>>124024595
I liked the ideas it presented, personally. Start complaining about the line delivery in TW1 and you'll never stop
>>
>>124024702
>Except for the part where she said she didn't seek out Geralt specifically because he was banging Triss
And now he's not, and he's sought her out. You still aren't actually responding to the main thrust of my argument. And again, once they are back together in the prologue, she's flirting with him, kissing him, telling him to be careful and come back to her...

It's not exactly understated.

>We know Yen and Geralt are chaotically attracted to each other and have acted tender even while not getting back together
Nah they're completely consistently attracted to each other. Their various dysfunctions in the early books just cause them to push each other away. That's long over.

>and have acted tender even while not getting back together
They way Yennefer acts in the Something More flashback is not remotely like how she acts in TW3's prologue. When she truly doesn't want to get back together, she makes it clear. "I don't want to do this", I think, were her exact words.

Taking the option to goad her after Geralt has chosen Triss makes it pretty clear she considered it cheating. She describes Geralt and Triss fucking as "vile".

That's not what's happening at all, you're too easily triggered. We're discussing character motivations growing out of the original topic of whether or not Geralt fucking everything in sight is good roleplaying.

Hell, both me and the primary guy I'm arguing with are Yenkeks, I'm pretty sure. Not sure about the other guy on my side. We're also not shitposting at all, we're having an actual discussion with points an counter-points and it's mostly civil.

Unless the timeline is even more fucked up than I thought this isn't actually the case and is her just backbiting him for the whiny nagging that prompts it.

I mean Ciri showed up, what, a month ago, tops? And Yennefer isn't let out of her cell until the Emperor offers to share resources to find Ciri. Yennefer probably hasn't been free all that long.
>>
>>124025197

>>124025047
It's long over, but with a new variable introduced - the entirety of TW1/2. Enough so that there's a coherent path to saying "fuck it" and going with Triss instead of Yennefer altogether.

Yennefer clearly wants him back, but Geralt is shown as more attracted yet conflicted.

>>124025202
That description is referring to his actions during his supposed amnesia. That results in her considering them separated, hence her not looking for Geralt at all. So much so that she wants to see if the reason she still cares at all is the Djinn.

>It's long over, but with a new variable introduced - the entirety of TW1/2. Enough so that there's a coherent path to saying "fuck it" and going with Triss instead of Yennefer altogether.
There is, but that's kind of accessory to the point to be honest. Geralt having lingering feelings for Triss and being afraid/confused about Yennefer despite wanting to be with her doesn't necessarily lead to "I'm gonna bang this brown succubus bitch".

>That description is referring to his actions during his supposed amnesia.
That was kind of a side point since we got a bit off track. She is pissed because she does think of it as cheating.

>hence her not looking for Geralt at all.
She does, however, look for Geralt, eventually. And we see how they interact when they meet again. I don't kiss my ex, personally. But I don't speak for everyone.

>So much so that she wants to see if the reason she still cares at all is the Djinn.
tbqh I'd want to know that myself but yeah the situation clearly intensified her doubts. Probably because it was working quite well before the incident what with having their own personal inter-universal heaven and all.
>>
>>124026209
>That is entirely possible, but iirc Geralt only asked Yen why she didn't come for him because she had sufficient time to have tried to reach out to him and help.
Well they were supposed to actually physically meet in that village near White Orchard that gets trashed in the opening cutscene.

> I don't remember the exact dialogue
It's pretty bitchy. Don't remember the exact words, but they're something like "Why didn't you look for me? Didn't have a use for me? Didn't even want to see me?" in a nagging tone. Yennefer is then bitchy right back. They tend to do that.

The timeline is pretty fucked up though so I'm not totally clear on the writers' intent there. It's a big game, they may even have had different writers and different intent between scenes.
>>
I'm pretty much out of new points now incidentally so I may be out of the discussion. Is kinda nice to see this facet of the characters being discussed without devolving into shitposting even if I don't agree with your interpretation entirely.
>>
>>124026448
Geralt's whining happens right after Yen explained how she got her memory back in short order, so I thought it was implied that she could have acted but didn't out of some manner of spite. Your interpretation is also possible, though, because of her imprisonment.

>>124026237
>She does, however, look for Geralt, eventually.
True, but she does so with a letter that calls back to Geralt's "friend" letter in book 3, which was sent while they were separated and he needed help with Ciri. Then again, her PS about the unicorn kind of adds a very specific connotation to her invitation.

>She is pissed because she does think of it as cheating.
The amnesia-adventures, yeah, I agree. Going with Triss in Novigrad, I dunno, since that's after the fact. Again, the fact she treats it so differently if you also commit to her in the Last Wish is what changes it for me.

>>124031056

You're approaching it from a player's viewpoint. From the characters', this is Yen proposing a barbaric and extremely dangerous procedure as her first plan, using a method that she personally is unfamiliar with (yeah she knows how it works in theory but not in practice, and ends up screwing up).

Geralt might meekly go along with "I guess we have no other choice" but Lambert going ballistic about it is refreshingly honest
>>
>>124031415
It's in character for Lambert to do that and I'm not criticizing the way he's written but his behavior isn't reasonable. He doesn't even let her finish explaining. Yennefer is the closest thing to an expert on this they've got and has a personal stake in this even if you don't personally believe she's trustworthy. She's not going to risk torturing Ciri to death unless she has no other recourse. Eskel objects as well, but in a much more reasonable way. Though he doesn't appear to have actually listened to what she said since he thinks it's the same as doing the entire Trial and that they maybe could make more witchers now.

Also "completely flips out" and "voice of reason" should probably not be used to describe the same character in the same sentence.
>>
>>124031415
>(yeah she knows how it works in theory but not in practice, and ends up screwing up).

>Yennefer is the closest thing to an expert on this they've got
Again, that makes sense when you know she's a protagonist main character, but as that bitchy, narcissistic witch that most characters see her as, not so much. Her plan, which she unilaterally decided on and had never been attempted, was a massive gamble and plot armor was in full play (Avallac'h's brain damage is barely mentioned after the first note). Not only is she being reckless, but she's also touting expertise in an area she knows little about and the Witchers comparatively more, which has to annoy them (though this may depend on how much she was allowed to study the Witcher process previously).

Sometimes the only reasonable person is the one willing to say how completely insane what they're doing is and avoiding groupthink.
>>
>>124033020
>She fails, it's Avallac'h himself who helps her fix the spell as he's dying.
Is that what happens? I thought he just got her chanting again. If it is that's cool and makes more sense. Vesemir actually contributed something.

>Again, that makes sense when you know she's a protagonist main character,
It makes sense when you know she's a mage and none of them are too, which is entirely in-character knowledge.

>(Avallac'h's brain damage is barely mentioned after the first note).
They can heal central nervous tissue otherwise Yennefer would till be blind.

>Not only is she being reckless,
Are you talking from an in-character standpoint or an out of universe standpoint here? I can't tell. If it's from the player's standpoint then I have to disagree.

> but she's also touting expertise in an area she knows little about and the Witchers comparatively more,
The Witchers know absolutely nothing about the actual working of the mutation process. Hell Geralt has most of his layman knowledge of genetics and evolution from Yennefer, according to the books.

>Sometimes the only reasonable person is the one willing to say how completely insane what they're doing is and avoiding groupthink.
The group think was to not do anything. Lambert wasn't the only one to object. And again, there is no other plan. None. Yennefer had the only one. She's doing something that has never been done before to lift a curse no human has ever seen cast before and apparently has never been lifted before.

Do you really think Lambert considered any of this and made an informed decision rather than just blowing up as soon as he heard the words "Trial of the Grasses"? Best case scenario, he's right for the wrong reasons.
>>
>>124033495
>None. Yennefer had the only one.
Wait, correcting myself here. Vesemir had another plan, as the oldest and most knowledgeable witcher. It didn't actually work, though it did accidentally contribute to Yennefer's solution to make it work.
>>
It would have been funny if the game had an option to agree with Lambert then there's like a fade to "Two Weeks Later" with Eredin finding Ciri on the Isle of Mist followed by a game over screen.
>>
>>124033495
>Best case scenario, he's right for the wrong reasons.
I'll accept this, to begin with. That was always what I was going towards - him being mistrustful and mad makes him a necessary voice here.

>Is that what happens? I thought he just got her chanting again.
She panics, starts trying to give vague CPR and calls for her medical kit to try to revive Uma. Then Avallac'h whispers the words to her to complete the spell.

The Witchers know a lot more about the complications and risks of the procedure. They know as little as Yennefer does about the technical processes, she just approaches it as "well it sorta does what I need so lets roll".

>>124033704
He did, but we've already established that Yennefer can reach out to literally any other mage. Ida gave some advice, but I'm not willing to accept that literally no other options were available. I will accept, however, Yennefer not wanting to involve anyone else in Ciri's safety, so she's not completely irrational, just bordering on overconfident.
>>
>>124034128
>implying he could find her as long as she was in that magical coma

I don't get the impression that Eredin is particularly great at the whole war thing
>>
>>124034437
>him being mistrustful and mad makes him a necessary voice here.
From a narrative perspective but not a practical one, since following his plan (Which is "your plan sucks think of something else instead while I sit here drinking vodka until Geralt drags me somewhere) leads to failure.

Vesemir is the voice of reason here, not Lambert.

>The Witchers know a lot more about the complications and risks of the procedure.
I doubt that. At best, Vesemir know some of the symptoms. Yennefer has far more comprehensive medical knowledge.

>They know as little as Yennefer does about the technical processes
If that were true Yennefer wouldn't even be able to do it in the first place.

>but we've already established that Yennefer can reach out to literally any other mage.
I'm not sure all of them have 24/7 megascope access since I have no idea how that works. But even if they did, the ones that could possibly be powerful and knowledgeable enough to help are either dead, hostile, or uninterested.

> but I'm not willing to accept that literally no other options were available.
Better than an ungodly old elven sage for lifting an ancient elven curse? She'd also been doing quite a bit of research on her own before that judging from all the books in her room.

>I will accept, however, Yennefer not wanting to involve anyone else in Ciri's safety, so she's not completely irrational, just bordering on overconfident.
She's not confident at all actually. There's a reason she's afraid to talk about it, and downs an entire mug of vodka before she does. Don't confuse decisiveness for confidence. Sometimes a bad option is your best option. Just sitting there and refusing to make a choice can be worse than making a bad one. And this was the only path available. That's kind of Yennefer's whole thing in this game. Making the calls no one else can or would when that's what's needed to move forward.

Avallac'h thought that it was only a matter of time and urged them to hurry with his potentially dying breath. Eredin also shows up before she even uses her powers, very soon after she wakes up. This implies they were close and that Geralt got there more or less in the nick of time.

>I don't get the impression that Eredin is particularly great at the whole war thing
He's good at war but bad at budgeting. You have any idea how much of Tir na Lia's GDP goes into spoopy costumes?
>>

>characters have perfect teeth

ha HA!
>>
>>124035606
Only the main characters and most of the women have perfect teeth. Most of the middle aged and old non-main characters have visible tooth decay.
>>
>>124035265
>Eredin also shows up before she even uses her powers, very soon after she wakes up.
I thought the suggestion was that it was that magical dead state that was hiding her as much as the island, and her waking up is what removed the extra layer of defense

>You have any idea how much of Tir na Lia's GDP goes into spoopy costumes?
Not as much as they spend on snowblowers, I bet

>>124035052
Yennefer's never seen it being performed. Again, we don't know whether she got a chance to research things while at Kaer Morhen in the past, so this is ambiguous.

Ida does research because she's a sage, but that doesn't mean she specializes on this particular curse's history. I'd argue a bit reason of going to her is not just her Sage status but the fact she's the most neutral of the Lodge members. Other options were possible.

>If that were true Yennefer wouldn't even be able to do it in the first place.
The entire reason they can't make Witchers is because while they know how the potions work, they don't know what the mage/spell aspect was. Nobody knows that part. Yennefer is literally winging it after some tips from Ida (and no doubt some research on her own part).

It worked. It was the right thing to do in retrospect. But accepting that as plan A without extensively considering alternatives is pretty wild given they thought it might be Ciri.
>>
>>124035908
>I thought the suggestion was that it was that magical dead state that was hiding her as much as the island, and her waking up is what removed the extra layer of defense
Why not both?

>Yennefer's never seen it being performed.
That's unfortunate but still not as big of a loss in value as to be proportional to the marginal gain of a complete layman viewing a medical procedure.

>Again, we don't know whether she got a chance to research things while at Kaer Morhen in the past, so this is ambiguous.

She must have at least during this visit, otherwise how could she perform it? It's a lost technique, or was.

>The entire reason they can't make Witchers is because while they know how the potions work, they don't know what the mage/spell aspect was. Nobody knows that part.
They don't really know how to do the mutagens either. The initial decoction of the grasses is the easy part. It's just an ingredients list and a slow drip IV. But Yennefer doesn't use the mutagens, she uses spells. So again, yeah, she actually knows more about what's going on here than they do.

> But accepting that as plan A without extensively considering alternatives is pretty wild given they thought it might be Ciri.
I really doubt Yennefer didn't try to think of other things while nothing was getting done for 1-2 weeks. She's not an idiot. As to the Witchers? What other alternatives? What are they going to think of that she didn't? I think Vesemir's pretty much exhausted their most esoteric and high yield curse breaking technique with his moonlight vigil.

Plus, they're on a time limit. Though no one seems to appreciate that at all except Yennefer and maybe Geralt depending on dialogue choices, given that Lambert literally just sat there getting hammered for 1-2 weeks (can't remember how long the break from Vizima to Kaer Morhen is)

I'm out for a bit anon, was nice talking to you
>>
>>124036781
Sure, but that's not a reason to go with a plan rooted purely in theory. Yennefer has never seen how the Trial works in practice, or what the effects are, or the practical variation in how it affects the individual. The fact that it literally is only saved by Aen Elle ex Machina should be evidence enough for that.

>>124036520
>Why not both?
But both is exactly what I said

>otherwise how could she perform it?
She's not performing the Trial magics, she's applying her own spells to the situation. When I say research I mean understand how the Trial potions affect the body themselves.

Yen knows what's going on in the sense that she knows what she's trying to do. But we also know from the books that the risks involved and the variation in reaction to the Trial are varied. Field-testing the decoction effect on Uma is a gamble and Yennefer has zero practical experience in handling or even observing those under the Trial.

>She's not an idiot.
I don't think she's dumb, I think she's just suicidally driven at times. And this is a good time to step back and consider "what are some other ways to break a curse/reshape a body that don't involve literally melting their organs and DNA irreversibly with toxins?"

Again, it ended up being the right choice. But it's a choice that needs someone to stand up and say "what the FUCK is this plan".

Enemies regnen-ing health really peeves me off in some games. The worst is when it comes to Boss battles and after taking one life bar or doing considerable damage they pull some regen shit whilst you're thinking it's almost over.

Bloody hell I know i's raining Geralt, I can see it shit up my screen. Seriously I hate the damn rain in this game. I'd literally meditate for more than 7 days and that shit just wouldn't stop. The game looks so beautiful and then the rain just pours to ruin the nice scenery and visuals.

TW3 really does need an Enhanced Edition though. It's so close to being perfect but there's a few real big omissions dragging it down.

I agree. That's been a trend in both of the previous games, too. What kind of surprises me is that TW3 is weak in exactly the same place as 2 - ending pacing.

Like what?
>>

>>124139824
Are you new to these threads? Most of Act 3 is poorly paced and poorly established, some crucial characterization is missing in a couple of subplots. Iorveth and Saskia just drop off the world. I could go into a lot more detail but it's been covered so much I don't really feel like it unless you're genuinely new and missed it all.

She was originally gonna be rescuable in the first act but act 1 was already really long and it was to be involved in a whole other questline with a mutually exclusive outcome and it was probably just way too much work to implement.
>>
>>124141541
Well god damn, toss that shit into Act 3. It's way too short as it is, and it could be interesting to ramp up the "everyone has plans for ciri but Geralt ain't lettin' them" tension that is just hinted at by Phillipa

>>
>>124140063
I agree since solely because there wasn't much interaction between Ciri and Yennefer when Ciri loved her to death in the books. It felt more like a hi. Ciri even had a more emotional response to Vesemir and probably for good reason since they killed him off
>>
>>124142341
>Keira: I second Triss

Sabrina didn't say anything about Yen dressing slutty that I recall. They do both accuse the other of being older than them. So I'm guessing they're around the same age, maybe a year or so off.
>>
>>124144076
True, I misremembered. She was complaining about a bunch of other Yen-related things.

I assumed they were pretty close in age, and are both fairly young mages who use it as a default insult before realizing it doesn't really work here
>>
>>124144486
>assumed they were pretty close in age, and are both fairly young mages who use it as a default insult before realizing it doesn't really work here
Yen's 90 something in the books and 100 by TW3. That's apparently on the upper end of average for mages. They just hate each other for whatever reason so will use whatever they can to bitch at the other. And it's great.
>>
>>124144662
I thought they considered anyone under 100 somewhat young?

I wonder what caused their bitchiness, besides them both being caustic individuals. And now I want to know.

>I thought they considered anyone under 100 somewhat young?
It depends on what book and who's talking.

>I wonder what caused their bitchiness, besides them both being caustic individuals. And now I want to know.
Sabrina is the bitchiest of all sorceresses and Yennefer has a nasty temper. They probably hit it off immediately and Tissaia had to keep them quartered in dormitories on the opposite sides of the island from each other.

Incidentally I always kind of assumed Yennefer and Rita were roomies but I can't remember anything specific in the books about it.

>>You will never play a version of Bully set in Aretuza, featuring young versions of the Lodge characters

>>
>>124145165
My impression was always that Rita was older, but that might just be due to the fact she's the rectoress of the school now. They're certainly very familiar with each other so you might be right, but then again Tissaia hangs out with them too. I honestly don't remember any actual details one way or another on that.

If Sabrina is around the same age, though, then that means she was there in the heyday of making fun of Yen's deformity. And we know she would have done so. What a bitch.

Good catch. Oh well. It's not like Sabrina is looking so hot these days, either.
>>
>>124145602
>but then again Tissaia hangs out with them too.
She's Yennefer's adopted mother, she taught both of them, and she was the rectoress before Margarita. It's less odd than, say, Yennefer and Triss's friendship with that 40-50 year age gap between them.

Still wouldn't mind knowing how that happened.
>>
>>124145742
They talk about being in school under Tissaia but that's a pretty broad timeframe. We don't know how long education there lasts.

I've been in velen for a fucking eternity and I'm halfway to 10.

Should I leave for novigrad now, as the main quest says or stay? The little side quests give such small amounts of exp they almost don't feel worth my time at this point, as I could kill 10 drowners and get the result of a sidequest and I've done a bulk of the monster contracts.
