Bowblade is irrevocably the best thing to do versus his second phase. His only method of approach is a 6-crawl hit move, which you can easily time your dodges to. Just run away, shoot a power shot into his face, rinse and repeat. Bait out his swipe by going close to him if you like, you can get two shots off on that sometimes.
Only thing you have to watch out for is his giant arm slam, which is easy to spot coming if you're looking for it.

Bait his swipe attacks. I'm not sure how long the hammer's attacks take, but you should be able to hit him at least once with it before he recovers. When he spits lava he tends to charge at you right after, so what I did was bait him into shooting the lava puddles into a wall to give me more space to back up and continue to bait the swipes. It takes a bit longer, but I was doing it on NG+3 and didn't want to take risks lol

When I finish this chalice, should I move on directly to Ailing Loran or do Yahar'gul next? It's my first playthrough and I've been trying to progress the main game and fixed chalices evenly so I don't have to waste time blowing through something I've completely outleveled. I came back to Bloodborne the beginning of November and deleted a bunch of my old characters, made a fresh character to do a Beast Claws character, who is in NG+.

I made an Arcane character, who is of dubious completion, but it's not as fun for me to use/manage bullets for spells as it is to smash shit and time weapon animations vs enemy attack animations.

Is there any way to overpower my beast claws build to take on the game/dlc (as a scrub)

Or should I make a new build like bloodtinge, is bloodtinge effective for PvE?

Just frustrated because I've tried to dig into the DLC like 4 times on my arcane characters but my blood vial/bullet efficiency is low. I die a lot, don't get far, and I'm not confident in my ability to clear my way in beyond that first giant axe guy.

DLC is great, better bosses than the base game and great atmosphere.
New weapons are a big deal. They about doubled the number of weapons available, and since about half of them can be picked up before the first boss, you can essentially start a new build with one of them as early as Vicar Amelia.

Most of the new weapons are clever and fun, like a huge meatcleaver-whip, Amygdala's Arm, the Moonlight greatsword, the pizzacutter and whanot. The only disappointing one I can think of is the shitty Boom Hammer which is just the tonitrus 2.0. SOme of the new weapons are a complete game-changer. The bloodletter makes str/blt builds a thing now, and the whole Kos parasite thing means that pure arcane is finally viable.
