Even without the tornado destroying the town and killing people, the story still would have been sad and messed up.
While the tornado was pretty lackluster and forced a crappy final choice, getting rid of it wouldn't have suddenly made the game happy.

The tornado has been there since the start. It's the first thing we see in the game.
It was always planned, but they definitely showed it too early. Since we're supposed to believe Max causes it from using her power...even though she sees it before she even know she has a power.
A better way to do the same story, but make it believable would be to:
>Start game with Max in Jefferson's class
>Class lets out, she goes to the bathroom and takes that picture of the butterfly
>Chloe dies
>Later that afternoon Max is sitting in her dorm
>We learn Max knew Chloe, we can look at the photos she has of them, read her diary, etc.
>Max is sad she never kept in touch with Chloe those years
>Max looks at the butterfly photo from that morning and feels strange
>Suddenly she's back in the bathroom
>Use the hammer to save Chloe
>Fade out of photo focus
>Tornado nightmare
>Max wakes up in her dorm thinking it was all a dream
>She looks at her phone
>She has a text from Chloe telling her to meet at Two Whales next morning
>Max realizes it's not a dream
>Max looks outside, but something is off
>It's snowing
>End of episode 1
It still leads down the same story path, with the same flaws and final decision, but it's at least consistent.

It was from one of the pictures Chloe showed her. I think the belt is from Chloe, I would really like to explore how Max draws influence from Chloe more maybe she might even get a tattoo like Chloe. She seems to come out of her shell after meeting up with Chloe again, they compliment each very well.

A lot of the short here is because of that, it would have insane clipping issues if they let her hair down. Hopefully season 2 gets more budget. That being said I wouldn't mind seeing pictures of her hair down in an epilogue.

I think it works well in retrospect for people who have played the game and know the characters, but it would have been a bit of a downer to play for the first time, to have to watch a girl experience the death of her childhood best friend first hand and then grieve over her. You're basically forcing someone to watch 'Sacrifice Chloe' as their first experience of the game before they get the 'super hero time power' stuff.
It's nice idea to introduce the focus power so early though. Would make Max going back to save William a bit more purposeful and the built up with angsty Chloe feel less random if we're thinking 'oh, we can do something about this!'

This, would have immediately made for a consistent and very evocative emotional theme of looking back and ruminating on 'what you would have done, if only,' and doing anything to fix a mistake or just get 5 more days with someone you love and the chance to say goodbye. Even without exactly knowing she would go back in time, the ultimate tragedy of the story would be earned by Max having had time to understand and regret her mistake of inaction - even if she didn't really know she was going back in time, she'd desire it enough in the moment of doing so to make it more effectively her decision, rather than as is with her simply reacting to the murder of a stranger and then doing basically the only decent thing on impulse and being horrifically punished for it.

But it's pretty obvious that the reason they fucked up something so extraordinarily simple is because they changed the cause of the storm, even if it would always ultimately lead to the same final choice.

She would realize she could also rewind at a different point. Or maybe not at all,only having the ability to jump into photos where she is present.
Anyway, it would still be choice-based As I said it would still be the same story, except introduced differently to be more concise. I almost feel like Dontnod new their "twist" that saving Chloe caused the storm was predictable so they presented it in a dishonest manner to make people think it was something else.
Although I would have applauded them for for a predictable, yet fulfilling story, over what they did: give us whiffs of things, lead us directions, just to bring us to a dead end and reveal our first thoughts (That we quickly wrote off as being illogical) was the truth and to end the story we need to pick two extreme choices with no in-between.
Then they botch it even further by making one of those endings completely unsatisfying and gives no actual closure.
It either comes down to Dontnod being shit writers (Which they've proven they're not throughout the game) or that someone (That they don't want to reveal and doesn't just involve budget) happened between Episode 4 and the release of Episode 5.

At what point in the story do you think Chloe figured out that Max saving her was the cause of the tornado?

As reckless as she is, Chloe is actually pretty fucking smart (apparently she's a closet science nerd even in the main timeline).

She tells Max the storm and her power are connected in the truck conversation towards the end of episode 2, and she has a book on mystical weather phenomenon she was using to research after Max tells her about the tornado.

Is it possible that Chloe actually figured out quite early on that the storm was Max's fault, but avoided ever directly blaming her because she didn't want to scare her or make her feel guilty (unlike Warren)?

What does Max even say to Chloe on the cliff? What order does she tell her the vision and saving her happens in? It wouldn't make sense for Chloe (or anyone ffs dontnod) to conclude Max's time-fuckery caused the tornado if she told her she had the vision and /then/ got her powers.

I get they wanted to have multiple endings as a selling point, but with how shoddy their logic, and choices they gave us, were they should have just committed to one ending and ran with it. Preferably saving Chloe because that was what Max wanted.

Yeah, time travel stories always assume that the last time travel automatically resets the timeline to zero and doesn't count your last time fuckery to even get there. But if that was the case, Max could have just saved Chloe anyways, because she got back to a timeline BEFORE she ever used her powers to save her. Chloe never died in that timeline yet, which means her future was still unwritten and saving her regularly, without using any time rewind shouldn't have fucked with the universe.

Plus Max used her power before saving Chloe because she used it to fix her camera after it falls off the desk, as well as to answer Jefferson's question correctly. So even if she lets Chloe die, she changed time prior to that. Plus you could argue that letting Chloe die is also changing time. Since Max originally stepped out screaming "No!", which either gave/ activated the rewind power. Not intervening and letting Chloe get shot is doing something different than the original. The only logical reason to assume Max even got that power in that time was to save Chloe and cause the storm that would give Arcadia Bay a new chance.

The ultimate sad ending.
Turns out in the original timeline, Max shouting would have gotten herself killed as well if it weren't for the time rewind. Her survival summons a tornado too a few weeks after the bay ending, so in order to prevent the tornado for good, she has to go back once more and let Chloe die, then shout and let Nathan kill her too.

They managed this really well with the reveal that Rachel isn't some mystic figure, but just a naive girl who ended up dead. That was a terrible downer, but it felt real and fucking beautifully done. The endings just feel cheap and purposelessly cruel, I can't even feel anything for their situation because I just don't buy it on such a fundamental level.

The difference is, Max, Chloe and other characters acknowledge at multiple points that Rachel could be dead. Even if we as Max avoid floating the possibility, the fact that the prompts are there keep it in our minds as something Max is thinking but won't say.
There's no such feeling of denial and inevitability when it comes to the storm and its cause, it's simply left entirely unaddressed. There is plenty of opportunity for the girls to visibly avoid talking about it (eg the many times they talk about Chloe's almost-death awakening Max's powers) and to blame it on outside forces (eg the Prescotts, Rachel, etc), but they simply don't even discuss it. So rather than feeling like a red herring, the Prescott connection simply feels like an aborted plot line at best (which it most likely is), and a poorly handled red herring that was much more interesting than the real story at worst. There was no reason not to have the girls acknowledge that if it was simply a red herring (unless it wasn't, at the time).

The saddest thing about these endings is that they could have made for a really amazing story even with them written as they are with all the same context, with just a few tweaks here and there.
Instead, it seems most likely that Dontnod was telling a very different story and just got far too ambitious for what they could deliver on.

Justin not remembering Chloe's name in Episode 1 was kind of weird considering he seems to be one of the only other students at Blackwell she was friendly with based on what we see in EP2 and EP4. Maybe they had him refer to her as the "blue-haired" girl for the purposes of keeping Chloe's identity a secret until the parking lot scene.

I don't disagree with any of that. I was just speculating on what Chloe did while she was trying to fill her need for actual love through vices like meaningless sex, drinking, drugs, etc.
Joyce wasn't wrong when she said Max would be a good influence on Chloe. Max is what Chloe needs: someone to love, that loves her back, that will be honest with her, and balance out her rashness/ impulsiveness.

I think Joyce knows she messed up, but she doesn't want to admit it. She got over William in her own way, by finding love in David. And then made the mistake of thinking that Chloe would be similar and get over it in the same amount of time. And I can't blame Chloe for not. She lost her father, who she was very close to, and her best friend within a short period of time. Then her mother brought home someone she clearly disliked and who brought his own mental issues to the potluck of existing ones in the Price house.
