I've doodled since I was little, and dedicated a couple weeks to it as a hobby. It's amazing how much you can improve when you learn how to draw with your eyes instead of your memory.

This takes some explanation.

Back when I was about 9 or 10, I used to make little comic books and posters about whatever the fuck I could think of: superheroes, cartoons, and video games of all kinds. You could say I was born with the talent; all of my relatives are involved in the arts in some way.

The question "hobby vs. job" is the one question I can't answer. The more I grew up, the more I became interested in gaming culture and gaming technology; I have more fond memories of games like SMB3 and Sonic 2 than regular childhood memories. I wanted to be a part of the industry, but I also wanted to make cartoons...like another animator turned let's player we know.

Long story short, I don't know which path to take, and it's fucking up my college experience.

Person you replied to here. I'm 29 years old, and in my fourth year of college. I'm finally in the second year of my degree. What I had to do was stop pussyfooting about what I wanted to do, and pick a direction.

I picked programming, and told myself I'm not changing careers or majors ever again. Things that affected my decision was job availability, guarantee of stable income, and most importantly, the potential for improving. I got lucky, found a tech support job, and will be starting an internship there as junior developer next year.

Out of curiosity, how old are you? Are you looking for a career that you think will be fulfilling, or something pragmatic that will give you a house, food, and a couple of kids?

Also, you have to keep in mind that your idea of what the industry is like is not always a reality. I've heard horror stories for both the animation and video game industry. There's always the success stories that inspire us, but they are success stories because they're not the norm.

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but I just feel like I may have been through what you're going through. I wasted a lot of years wanting to be a renaissance man.

The biggest problem is that I've barely done any research into either career. I don't know how to use ANY animation software (besides fucking Stick Figure Animator) and the only video game I've ever made is a shitty 2D platformer using GameMaker, with stolen assets. As far as my job experience goes, I'd be up for anything at this point.

And yes, I'm fully aware that I'm not going to get as good as Disney or Nintendo right off of the bat, I'm going to have to wade through some deep shit if I'm even going to get into Volition.

Ehhhhh, no offense, but "Digital Media" sounds like wasted money. Then again, I'm concerned with the hard benefits my degree can offer me. Is that like at a technical college? I personally would recommend going to a technical college. Two year degree and cost way less. A lot of them have specific courses for transferring to a 4 year college as well. The tech college I attend has a full video game development degree, and only takes 2 years to complete.

It sounds like you might be in classes with other folks who have made some games, huh? It just sounds like you're comparing yourself to other people. You're fresh into college, and not expected to know how to use any of those tools. Hell, I love video games, and I'm making a simple text-based RPG for my project. Sure, it's not super fancy, but I'm having so much fun with it.

Again, if you're in a 4 year college, I highly recommend taking a look at local 2 year options. By the time you're done with that degree, you'll either be happy with what you have (and most importantly, employable ((tech colleges focus more on jobs instead of "enlightment"))), or you'll have a better idea of what you want to do with your life. You'll also have a lot less debt, heh. I'm currently at 22K debt with student loans, thanks to trying a 4 year degree at first.

Things change fast when you're that age. I just hate hearing stories about people getting a full degree, with all of its debt, at such a young age. Shortly after, some of them realize they wanted to do something completely different with their life.

No, it's just a regular run-of-the-mill general college. I'm only there for two years, and then I'm transferring...somewhere.

This has only ever worked in favor of the game with the Fallout games/just NV since it's the only good 3D one. With Sonic's speed, seeing the whole map would be something done in hours instead of days and that map would be empty as well since there is no direction or focus or level design in general since Sonic is a platformer and should stick to that in some form otherwise he completely loses his identity gameplay-wise.

The reasoning for that is because going full speed in a crowded place will cause collateral damage. Zones will have Unleashed speed which you already know is pretty fucking fast, with the hub world upping the speed limit.

I've never seen someone mention this, but one of the biggest problems with Sonic 2006 isn't even the loading times, or the level design, since I played it on a late-gen Xbox so the former wasn't a problem, and I usually just adjust to the latter. The problem is that all the characters dn't seem like they want to be there. Rouge sounds eternally bored, trying her hardest to express emotion but not quite doing so. Sonic's voice feels devoid of energy, Omega now has a generic robot voice. Tails's voice, its worse than even Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Heroes. Its worse than having an actual kid do the voices. Not a single open world game has ever EVER managed to be large and detailed. Such a thing would require a copious amount of time and money that a company would just not be willing to shell out for such a thing. The risk is too high for such a meager reward since the demographic would be small to begin with. The one thing Sonic fans do have in common is that they enjoy playing a platformer when they play Sonic. Only a small amount of that player base would be happy with the product. It's a shit idea on top of just not being practical. Try not having the flimsiest defense ever next time.

Take that, remove most of the puns, make it less silly, and update the character designs. You're now left with Sonic and his friends going on adventures and exploring the world. That's basically what happened.
