Feel free to discuss city building games from series such as Cities: Skylines, SimCity, Cities XL, Banished, Anno, Tropico, Pharaoh or any others.
Limit discussions to the games themselves. Meta posts such as "Why don't we discuss X game instead of Y?" aren't relevant to anything and don't contribute to the thread.

GUYS, PLS HELP! I added some more buildings though the workshop and now I always get the "cities skylines.exe stopped working" error. It's not the mods, since it also appeared after I unsubscribed the new mods. I reinstalled the game, but it didn't help, it just keeps happening.
I have a lot of other mods installed but they didn't make any trouble before, I don't know what it could be.

Depends on what degree. Several building games have some kind of terraforming, but mostly not very extensive. You could look at God games to see if there are some that tickle your fancy.

>>123355330
There's also the Chinese version, but it isn't on GoG yet.
>>123355414
That one is a bit off, the camera is is more zoomed in compared to previous releases, or the buildings got bigger, I don't know, but that's the only complaint I have about it.
The differences from the previous installments make Emperor great, it handles gods differently and has this great random map generator type of thing. Loved it.

I currently live near Seattle so it's city everywhere. I want to live in another part of the state that is smaller and more rural. I don't do much so the appeal of a huge amount of entertainment doesn't do it for me

I currently live in a large city. I used to live in a small town (~10k) right next to a ~70k city. That was perfect because you had the nice cozy feeling of the small town, but all the amenities of the big city since it's just a couple minutes away.

SimCity 5 was a let down and Cities Skylines is what SimCity 5 was supposed to be.

>>123355817
Imo emperor was at a point where the gameplay got too streamlined until it was easy.
Especially the placement of nobles as separate from worker houses. Also no yuan/ming expansion
Anyway cleopatra/pharoah was the zenith because of the building projects that were diverse and large. Its fun watching them take shape and they look great when completed.
Cotn played totally different to the impressions builders but i think it was where ancient cbers needed to go. Too bad no one like it
>>123546252
CotN had a lot of really great ideas. It just lacked content and better AI. After you get enough scribes to run all your services there's nothing higher up in the 'tech-tree', so to speak, you just build more of the same and maybe some underwhelmingly easy monuments. And having a dude cross the map just to pray at some podunk shrine was stupid - you couldn't build proper neighborhoods or separate work camps or anything like that, even though the freaking tutorial suggests you should.
But enough negativeness, I really liked how they based the entire economy on food. Simple, elegant and historical. And exploring your city close up was fun - a definite advantage of being 3D.
>>123546629
Exactly. It was the direction cbers needed to go rather than the functionally communist impressions type builders.
They just needed.to fix the ai in a sequel.bt then we got.caesar.4.instead which was a regression
>>123546790
You know, now I've got a bit of a hankering to play it for a while. Gonna do that, and maybe post pics if this thread doesn't die in the meantime.

The logistics system demands that you keep building garages to keep your goods moving until you either end up demolishing your entire city center to build parking or watch your economy collapse.
Of course there is truth in this, but in real life people do things like, you know, build multi-storey car parks. In Tropico 4, you don't have a choice. You have to build the garages, or your city dies. This one aspect ends up totally distorting urban planning.
Also, from an aesthetic standpoint, the apartments in Tropico 5 give incentive to actually build cities that look like cities. I would have preferred that road access be a requirement and not an option, but the housing quality bonus is still enough to make it compelling. Tropico 3 and 4 actually punished you for doing this, since building roads took up valuable real estate that could be better spent onPARKING GARAGES

The old Ikarus commie buses around here- at least, the ones that are articulated like the one anon linked- can carry 147 people. Of course, modern buses with lowered floors have less leg space due to having to fit the wheels and engine somewhere.
>>123605660
But even the non-articulated low-floor new buses can carry 80-something people. 30-40 is just absurdly low and only sounds right for long-distance buses where everyone sits.

Probably not.
I mean, a huge part of city building is admiringthe city you've build.
Dwarf Fortress doesn't allow that.
>>123612210
Yes, unless they have a general exclusively for them, like dwarf fortress has. RimWorld is accepted here, and it's basically df without tiles and less complexity.
>>123612680
Dwarf fortress does indeed allow that.
>>123612210
I feel like the skill is a bit too small. You're building a fortress, not a full blown city. I mean in any real city builder you're not building individual rooms/staircases/etc you're putting up entire buildings and stuff and managing the larger scale decisions. I'd say games like DF where you build individual rooms and furnishings are one level of scale below a true city builder.

It's right there. And articulated buses from the same manufacturer can carry up to 176 passengers, and they're low-floor too
As a frequent bus-taker, I can tell you that the theoretical maximum capacity of a bus and what people are willing to tolerate on a daily basis are not the same. Like, I've been in buses that were crammed full and while I didn't count how many people there were, there could very well have been a hundred. But that was on a holiday where taking the bus was free, not a regular day.

>>123661697
What are you looking for specifically? I have some files I can upload to sendspace.
>>123672629
Thermodynamics is a branch of physics concerned with heat and temperature and their relation to energy and work. It defines macroscopic variables, such as internal energy, entropy, and pressure, that partly describe a body of matter or radiation. It states that the behavior of those variables is subject to general constraints, that are common to all materials, not the peculiar properties of particular materials. These general constraints are expressed in the four laws of thermodynamics. Thermodynamics describes the bulk behavior of the body, not the microscopic behaviors of the very large numbers of its microscopic constituents, such as molecules. The basic results of thermodynamics rely on the existence of idealized states of thermodynamic equilibrium. Its laws are explained by statistical mechanics, in terms of the microscopic constituents.
Thermodynamics applies to a wide variety of topics in science and engineering, especially physical chemistry, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering.
Historically, the distinction between heat and temperature was studied in the 1750s by Joseph Black. Characteristically thermodynamic thinking began in the work of Carnot (1824) who believed that the efficiency of heat engines was the key that could help France win the Napoleonic Wars. The Irish-born British physicist Lord Kelvin was the first to formulate a concise definition of thermodynamics in 1854:
"Thermo-dynamics is the subject of the relation of heat to forces acting between contiguous parts of bodies, and the relation of heat to electrical agency."

>>123759552
Cities CL looks really great but is somewhat lacking in depth. And it have a huge problem with memory leaks, and no, it will not be fixed since the ones working on the game for axed from the company.
SC4 is really good and the modding community makes it the most in depth city builder with almost 10 years worth of modding content (before BAT got released doesn't count).
The sprites in SC4 are also really good looking and can really bring your city to life.
For all it's flaws the only big limitation is that a vast majority of lots are made for 4 direction roads, the roads themselves are limited to 8 directions, more if you download NAM, but I can't really think of any terrain/lots that fits those kind of roads.
But if you just want to grid, you'll be just fine and the many types of ploppable and growable buildings will look great (once again, the sprites are absolutely beautiful).
SC4 also have an issue called prop-pox which is (most likely, no one still knows certainly what casuses it) when a part of your save file gets too big (becasue the amount of props you put in one tile in your region) and it starts compressing. This is an irreversible thing, and every time you save the game it will get more and more compressed, causing your city to lose textures at random (see the "wall" towards the water line in my attatched picture for an example).
You can also try Cities: Skylines if you want. It lacks content, but it's the only "major" city builder that isn't abandoned by the devs.
Personally I don't like the style of art in the game and it really puts me off.
It's kind of like a slightly worse Cities XL but without the issue of memory leaks.

>You can also try Cities: Skylines if you want. It lacks content, but it's the only "major" city builder that isn't abandoned by the devs.

Network Addon Most is kind of a must
>>123761453
I've never player SC4 but I was a huge fan of SC3000. Is it better? Should I give it a try?
By the way, best soundtrack ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkXOxLpdMds
>>123761620
Mods will make it better, way better. But the way the game handles mods will make it a clusterfuck if you add too many and unless you know what you're doing they will probably not work.
The essential ones are probably just NAM (just got new release) and a mod that fixes crime (police can't patrol X amount of tiles from a road so large buildings like airports/uni/malls would always have high crime rates). Other than that Maybe a terrain mod and a water mod you like.
It's probably best if you play vanilla and discover bit by bit what you think needs to be added and then download it.
Or you can download a modpack. It'll be very easy if it was working in the first place, but when you want to add more you might run into trouble if you don't know what mods are included. Mods conflicting with each other and not unheard of.
>>123755886
This is Crusader, right? I only played the very first, does its sequels add anything new to the game?

I'm happy people legitimately forget societies all the time.
>>123761998
A try will not hurt, but let's put it this way. Even if I think SC4 is a really good game, there's no denying it was the start of the demise of city building games.
The devs fucked up. Expansion/mods fixed most of it's flaws but you may find it lacking if compared to 3000.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-I8GDklsN4Every thread.
This is what happens without public transortations. Think twice before you complain about congestion. It's probably YOU who are at fault.
>>123762224
Doesn't SC4 end up running super slow on the largest maps even with modern CPUs?
>>123762926
I've never had that problem. Ok, I had it once when I filled a max size square with only growables. Huge population to simulate.
But like with many games you can have as many cores as you want, but what will count is the burst of a single core since the game can't really utilize the other cores.
>>123763014
Where is that from?
>>123759552
>>123761998
If any of you decide to play SC4, make sure to play on Hard. Easy and normal difficulty will fuck your RCI demand up. And all they do is giving you a bit more cash at the start.
Finally got Tropico 4.

>>123789250
Its below average, expect they fucked it up by building it around a extremly bad multiplayer mode.
That multiplayer sucked more than the one of Simcity 2015 and died pretty quickly.
You have to trade people, offices and holidays etc. with a shitty company called onmicorps otherwise your city goes down the drain.
Plays a lot like Simcity Societies where you dont build a city only place buildings that are needed at a time.
Need more people? Place a commieblock.
Will I need a mod to upgrade this road? Game won't let me.
>>123792705
Why so blue?
>>123792248
I think the angle is too shallow for a 6 lane road
to sum up 4 hours of gameplay
i should really improve my traffic game
also leaving only one major crossing for the 3 town districts seems to not work well. also some streets seem to randomly clog up
also i didnt know even the lakes have a current and didnt realise the pollution was lined up to my water drains and suddenly i had like 6k sick people and built way too many hospitals
how do you manage larger cities? seems like one-way 3-lane roads are the only way to somewhat manage the gigantic amounts of traffic between residential areas, industrial zones and the highway
>>123795798
you have way too many intersections on those arterials, for one thing
>>123796029

>ah, that's the one I wanted, let's place it here near the cozy woods, and over there's some water that will look nice (thinking back I'm sure I used to grid back then too)
>hmm, looks like I need more lumber, but this little forest looks too good, I guess I'll have to put my workers at risk to chop down this forest over there instead
Ofc not all the games looked like that, sometimes it was just "chop everything down! You can't stop industrialisation."
And in Age of Mythology it was often kind of similar, damn that game was pretty.
>>123846275
Age of Mythology was okay, but it could have been a lot better.
>more buildings
>buildings have an area of control that change the landscape around them, like the undead in warcraft 3 or everyone in heroes of annihilated empire
One of the only RTS where you can play with Egyptians and have a lot of freaky stuff in your army.
>>123847083
Yeah, but I think they nailed the visuals/art.
Also I didn't like the favour system too much, almost alway never played greece. Imagine giving up workers in an RTS, unthinkable.
I've never played Rise of Nations, but is the building comfy in that?
>>123848245
The caravans make ugly roads.
>>123848067
To be honest, I only played Egyptians. I like the flavour, I like the system.
>>123848245
Kinda. You have towns, that are limited but have an area around them that you can build buildings in to upgrade them.
For example, you can build a lumber camp outside of a town radius, but you won't be able to build a sawmill to increase the lumber camp's output. So most of the time, everything is cramped.
The downsides of that game is that the AI is bad, that the ressource cap system is really annoying and slows down the early game a lot, and that the multiplayer is unplayable.

>>123856321
>Most
I know there are exceptions.
>>123856421
That's kind of always been the way of things though. Most games were derivative shit or outright shovelware, and a tiny fraction were the gems worth remembering. Been that way back to the dawn of gaming pretty much. It's true that the rising cost of game development might have caused more developers to prefer to cash in on existing IPs or copy something popular rather than try something new, but I'm still happy enough with the few good ones that manage to shine through even now.

Usually when someone answers with "it depends on <x>" and there's no further information, they're implicitly asking you for your situation with x. In this case he was actually pretty clear - you get to buy new tiles at certain population milestones, as such "it depends on your population."

can i get some advice on traffic? i built a minor high density residential area but now im getting massive traffic on the highway exit. i noticed most of it happens because all the cars have to stop at this marked crossway. is there a way to give priority to the road coming from the highway exit towards the bottom right so the cars dont have to stop at the crossways and get into the city faster?
or can i split up the traffic from the highway to send some of the vehicles to the next exit?
I'm feeling a bit fed up with working on my metropolis region and wanted to start something new just for a change of pace.
I thought of this image sicne it looks pretty nice for what I have in mind, but I'm not sure what the region's name is.
I looked up what I could and it seems it's from somethingawful, the author there calls it "Steigen" but that gave no results on any exchange I use.
Does anyone here happen to know what region this is or where i can get it?
Alternatively, does anyone know a region suited for a rural landscape, the largest stuff I will build are smaller cities.
