Dragon's Dogma? Sold 1/10th of Skyrim. Financial failure for Capcom, which made them take less risks.

SEGA? Almost all their big IPs failed in the west. Went back to just caring about the Jap market.

From Software? One of the few devs that actually managed to sell games last gen and thus made Bloodborne.

SCEJ? All their Jap games flopped.

Don't forget that Tales of Vesperia, one of the best Modern Tales was released only for 360 in America, while the superior PS3 version was left in Japanese shores, where no matter how hard we ask, can never come here even in Digital form.
And that the FF13 trilogy was killing the brand to western audiences, creating a divide of people who either went 'fuck JPRGs now' and 'I need new JRPG franchises to get into' while the remains stayed on the sinking ship.

This causes 3 problems.
1. More development time/money spent on making sure the versions all run, and that if they can't run something on 1 version they have to dial it down in either that version, or in the PS4 version to make it not vastly superior.
2. You are limiting the game because the other version or two can't be vastly inferior to the PS4 version. This applies to graphics, how it runs, and for Vita vs console version how much content you can have before the Vita cart runs out of space. (Same reason I've worried about DQ11 having a 3DS version)
3. Develops lose more than they gain. Because Vita is basically dead in the west, and that people are moving on from PS3 to PS4 the fact that Japanese devs cover their asses by making multiple versions only serves to damage them in the long run. Because Vita versions won't sell westward, nor will PS3 versions, and the PS4 version isn't on the level most people except from PS4 thanks to FF15 so to normalfags the game looks like 'shit' and thus only real JRPG fans buy it, but they're buying a product watered down by reasons 1 and 2

Either way, so long as Japan clings on to Vita letting its game look like early last-gen games, they won't have a chance in the west. The thing is that these games don't exist in a vacuum. Even in Japan, you're seeing western games sell more and more by the year. And these are high-end blockbuster productions. So long as Japanese publishers cling to outdated hardware due to fear to jump on the changing times, their games will be at a disadvantage compared to full-blown PS4 games. How will they even market these games when the latest CoD looks almost photo-realistic while their game looks like an early PS3 game?

I don't mind ugly games. But I'm not as oblivious to think that Japan can still remain relevant if they don't attempt to adapt to modern hardware. The problem I have with Vita ports and not PS3 ports is that Vita's architecture limits a game's scope substantially. And we're living in an era where everybody wants their games massive.

People seem to expect it to show up at every Sony conference (TGS I can understand, less so with E3 or Gamescom and the like) and get upset when it isn't there. This is ignoring the fact that Atlus are known to prefer their own outlets for revealing things, especially with Persona, and are thus less likely to show it at events because of that.

Tearaway is a first party game and is naturally going to have more presence because it's a Sony IP developed by one of their most notable internal studios. That alone is going to get it more stage time than Tales or Persona are ever likely to have.

Third party is one of their main things, much like it always has been. PlayStations entire shtick is attempting to be the go to for everything, especially this gen. Third party support has always been central to that. But not every third party can get stage time.

Yes they can. Those games are being released on PS4. Games that are Sony-only don't get elevated above FF15 in relevance to the PlayStation audiences interests simply because an Xbox One version of FF15 exists.

Ultimately I agree that Sony could do with pushing more mid to large Japanese IPs though. But that's not something Sony can do solely on their own - they need the games to be be something that can work well for that. They're developing Gravity Rush 2, Gran Turismo Sport and The Last Guardian as large first party titles, but those alone aren't going to change the market.

Though regardless, mid-scale Japanese games still wouldn't get much stage time much like most mid-scale western ones don't.

Yeah, the AI was quite bad. But that also plays into the game difficulty where it was only so to make a game easy. A game being easy isn't inherently bad, but when that difficulty means your partners also control terribly in conjunction it doesn't play out. Capture right I thought was fine. That's not how the market works. Most consumers just want a general gaming device. Call of Duty, Ass Creed (less so now I guess), Batman, Final Fantasy and other major IPs push console sales and sell more units on PS4 alone than most exclusives do. That's not to say exclusives are worthless - Uncharted 4 will undoubtedly push the PS4 hard, even harder than the other AAA games I mentioned here, because it's exclusive - but that's because it's a large IP too.

I bought my PS4 mostly for the first party and smaller Japanese third parties, which are all Sony-only or PS4 exclusive, I'm no different to you. But me and you don't represent the majority audience at all.

Ultimately that's just a fact of life. Not everything can be shoved in peoples faces at E3. Sony has methods of presenting these kinds of games - that's what their social media platforms are for. Though again I don't necessarily agree with the weight Sony puts on particular things. I certainly think SCEAs actions regarding Gravity Rush in the past couple months are fishy and imply they don't want to put much weight behind it, which I think could result in hurting the IP ultimately.
