I try to take south west england because it is a nice trap with the terrain and their best industrial province. Prying any province off of GB is nice because you won't need naval invasions.

You might also be able to just continually occupy their province and wait for separatist/nationalist rebels to pop up and let them win, that way you'd be able to war the new states separately.

I know this is 2050 but Russia should only own Crimea and the provinces that would be Donetsk and Luhansk since there is no chance the rebels will be able to make a successful offensive anymore. Also why not make Novorussia a puppet and not annexed since the chances of Russian annexation of that area is low right now. Ukraine should also own the small penis sticking into Romania.
Italy shouldn't be split into 2 unless it's a fascist uprising type civil war like in Kaiseriech.
Those two provinces under Serbia that are owned by Bulgaria trigger me.
ISIS should either be much bigger or non-existent.

I'm playing norse, and I just had a 11k retinue stack of skirmishers and housecarls lose to a 5.5k stack of Irish revolters. Twice, decisively. I don't give a shit how good their commanders are, 3 20 martial commanders with no conflicting traits to their army shouldn't lose decisively to a half sized mixed army with no defender bonus. They also activated their psychic powers and called off their attack on my 3k stack when I had an 8k stack move a county away in their fog of war. This shit drives me bonkers.

I just hate the combat system as a whole. It tries to emulate strategical fuck ups that happened throughout history, but it doesn't adapt to the reasoning at all, it just makes your commanders go "Okay, I have 5k Housecarls here. Better not use any of them this time around". If they really wanted to emulate something like that correctly, their should've been a much wider variety of environmental defense bonuses to plan around, rather than have commanders decide not to use their actual combat force in open field combat.

I need to knock Prussia out of GP status so that I can form Germany. Is it worth taking Silesia and/or releasing Rhineland in order to help do so?

I feel like that wouldn't work given the lack of archers, but my current retinue is just archers and housecarls (+ those 50 HI that come with the 200 archers, but they don't count as Housecarls anyway), and my commander still decides to use retarded tactics that completely waste the advantage having crazy attack buffed HI gives. In my experience a force of exclusively Housecarls or assorted heavy troops is neat, but it doesn't work nearly as well as the unending rapetrain that were longbowmen or knights [and horse archers don't even need to be mentioned, naturally]. But my knowledge it's outdated, since I didn't play Charlemagne much and have barely touched Horse Lords in favor of EUIV

Yeah I read into the tactics system and it said to make sure your commander has 15 martial and no conflicting traits to the army,but even making sure of all that I still get the worst choices in tactics out of nowhere. Its frustrating because I know I can just spam light skirmishers, win every fight and have no faction problems due to troop numbers, but that's too easy. However getting your entire army wiped in open field combats that a child could figure out how to win is too frustrating.

I haven't tried what you suggest, because I assumed having no archers in a flank would lead to shit morale after the skirmish phase, but I should've tested it.

Vanilla Scottish pikes are still completely broken because they don't have skirmish tactics, enter melee a quickly as possible, then roll Schiltron for +240% attack and +360% defense, and countering horse-based tactics (the French, Germans, Bretons, Spanish, Polish, Hungarians, Byzantines, Persians, Altaics and Arabs as far as I remember).

They don't do as well against heavy infantry but the schiltron is broken enough for them to at least hold their own.

It's +360% attack, -50% defense for Heavy Infantry, so it's an all out murder spree for both sides.

It's also a charge with a bonus against stand fast, so the tactics it's good against usually have a bigger bonus against it.

Technically it's never too late to colonize, since late admin tech administrative efficiency gives you a hefty boost to colonial growth.
I guess the question is when colonizing becomes pointless since the game is too close to be over, which in my personal opinion is anytime after the early 1600s, if you're an european.
