The game doesn't even tells you how they died. They could have had an accident, killed by another other monster, or anything else. Asgore looks seriously spooked when he sees you for the first time, he probably never expected you to make it all the way there.

The theory I like to go with is that they worked under Gaster, he had his mountain bike mishap or whatever, Sans and Alphys survive, Sans goes to Alphys to try and fix the machine but realizes she can't remember Gaster, they fail to fix the machine, Sans goes into a depression while Alphys blames herself for both, she snags the DT Extractor blueprints from him and goes on to do the experiments while Papyrus picks his brother up and forces him to get that sentry job, and eventually the player shows up and things go on from there.

Except it literally was. Almost half of the expansion pack was not available on release, and was added in as a "patch" a few days later.

The Keeper wasn't announced as part of the dlc but it's not "additional content", it's dumb shit gated by McMillen's own opinion of himself (and while The Keeper himself wasn't part of the announced content, about 8 or so items he unlocks were, and as such were unattainable).

This wasn't something "to bring people's interest" back, this is literally, by his own words, him stopping people from playing his game until he feels they have played it long enough so they can play with the character.
