It's okay anon. I'm close to release and I have been fiddling around with not one but two other games. One will get released mere months after my first.
>>
>>122408405
well i'm only writing this other thing because the writing of the main vn is already finished but i can't release it because i'm waiting on assets
only i've been waiting for a while and i got restless
>>
>>122410107
That's an okay reason to get started but - how will you feel when the assets come in, but you really want to be writing this other thing?

I say, having repeatedly delayed a project I've promised people because I keep being stuck waiting for someone else and starting something else in the meantime....
>>
So /evn/ what game have you seen recently that has a good looking GUI. I'm looking for samples to blatantly copy and tear apart for my own gain.
>>
>>122413432

ClockUp's recent games have a very nice, simple GUI.
>>
>>122413432
It's hard to recommend one. Games tend to have certain feels in their GUI.
>>
>>122414141

This. When it doubt the "subtitles over a black gradient" is a safe bet imo, but you should aim for a GUI that reflects the feeling of your game.
>>
>>122413432
I guess to actually answer you, there's literally "visual novel interfaces" on tumblr. There's also VNDB which tends to turn up textbox ideas.

22nd Century Fictional Pope Richard
>>
>>122454876

Wasn't Richard historically gay anyway? Or at least there's a lot of people nowadays who suspect he was?

Start a war to give yourself access to a whole army full of pretty boys, fuck them, cry manly tears when they die.
>>
>>122462237
Everyone was gay historically, just like all blacks were pharaohs and shit. Don't take stuff like that seriously unless there is evidence.
>>
>>122462772
_Everyone_'s a bit of a strong statement. I know I've read stories with gay Richard in them, that's all.

Looking it up online, it looks like there's not much clear evidence other than him having a very close friendship with another man and no legitimate children, making confessions relating to unspecified sexual sins, and being WAY more interested in running around with the army than in going to England, but historians are divided on the subject. So I guess you could write it either way and still say you had decent backing for your view.

>In the same year, there came a hermit to king Richard, and, preaching the words of eternal salvation to him, said: "Be thou mindful of the destruction of Sodom, and abstain from what is unlawful; for if thou dost not, a vengeance worthy of God shall overtake thee". The king, however, intent upon the things of this world, and not those that are of God, was not able so readily to withdraw his mind from what was unlawful, unless a revelation should come to him from above or he should behold a sign.
>>
>>122434532
>add english voices to terrible game
>it bombs even harder
>GUESS YOU GUYS DONT LIKE ENGLISH VOICES OH WELL
for once i'm okay with this technique, at least if it helps drill in the idea that english voice acting is almost never good.
>>
>>122462237
> Wasn't Richard historically gay anyway? Or at least there's a lot of people nowadays who suspect he was?

That was the joke.

>>122463712
> close friendship with another man

Iirc it was the king of france. Mind you, back then it was common to do stuff like inviting friends to share your bed non-sexually, but it's one of the things that makes historians go "probably gay".
>>
>>122465264
English voice acting in games is often good. But not when you have a tiny budget and/or are hiring the same five 'anime' voices for everything.
>>
>>122465357
In professional games, yeah. I'm talking about evn and how 90% of them decide it's better to have shitty voice acting than none at all.
>>
>>122465357

It can also be a huge inconvenience. See Backstage Pass.

Will there ever be a waifu game with a hidden bro route? Gay sex optional.
>>
>>122468515

i'm now distracted by the mechanics of imagining a naked girl TRYING to figure out how to wrap herself up in ribbons and failing utterly because the ribbons are too thin and don't cling to skin so they just slide off

Oh wow um thats a pretty big game. Well I love stat raisers but like the above anon said try to do it right. Otherwise you could just add some false choices and have the same effect.
>>
>>122505187
Many stat-raisers are kind of boring, though. Figuring out the balance to make them interesting and interweaving it with your story so it doesn't feel stupid and contradictory isn't that easy - winter wolves doesn't always pull it off. Like, if you're going to have the path fail at the end unless your Academic stat is really high, it's bizarre to have all the story events up until that point act like everything is perfect and wonderful and then suddenly without warning you're kicked out of school and told you're a loser who never studies.

That sounds like some sort of management sim - like, you have to get your whole harem to keep their stress down and pass their classes so they don't get expelled and you can date them all. Which could be a fun game but is not something you should just throw into an existing plot.

So, "the letter" kickstarter has almost certainly failed. Any ideas on why that is? The game looked to have relatively decent art, which I thought was the main factor for getting funded these days.

Winter Wolves and Bioware would say otherwise.
>>
>>122549019
>Any ideas on why that is?
They raised a decent amount for a completely unknown team with an idea that's fine but lacks any immediate MUST PLAY / MUST TALK ABOUT hook.

Undead Darlings didn't succeed either. The art was cute, the concept was more focused, but they still only hit about $20K out of the $50K they wanted.

There's tons of kickstarters these days, there's no guarantees you can raise high sums.

Bioware still likes to pretend they are selling rpgs though. There was also a huge shitstorm when the LIs were revealed (mostly about how they weren't all bisexual like in DA2 two).

WW is weird and since players didn't like the obviously superior Amukiki in Loren, I consider their playerbase's taste shit anyway.

Careful with the perspective on the younger lad's face: his eye looks like it's seen from the profile, dead on (partly also because of the structure of the cranium that you can infer from how the hair looks), while the nose and mouth are in 3/4 from below.

I've had a stab at showing you what I mean, though it's just a 3 minute sketch in MS Paint.

>There was also a huge shitstorm when the LIs were revealed (mostly about how they weren't all bisexual like in DA2 two).
The shitstorm mostly means people care; at that level there was nothing they could do that wasn't going to get complaints.

Many people were outraged by having all the LIs bisexual in DA2. As a bi myself it all makes perfect sense to me, but the lesbian fans complain that it's lazy writing allowing bioware to 'recycle' the LIs without writing any REAL f/f content, and the het male players were just grossed out by the thought of being surrounded by stealth gay.

Are there more of those than there are of people who want every option available? Hell if I know.
>>
>>122562316

It also made sense to me, since the way ME and DAI locked you out of romances was pointless (except maybe Dorian for plot reasons). It also makes sense for games where the MC's gender in not going to become relevant (no romance) or you have the budget to make them truly different stories. Imo the audience for vns is really divided so you have to have at least one "must play" element, whether it's waifus/husbandos, good gameplay, someone famous on board, etc. Just having a 'good' game isn't enough to get 30k.

Why don't you fund your games through patreon? I figured it'll be easier to get.
>>
>>122575413
Patreon is a terrible way to fund games, it's meant for people who release content on a regular basis. Games take forever! If you have a staff artist who's willing to pop out a contributor image every month then sure, but for most of us it's not really practical.

If you have the right kind of game then once it gets going you could use patreon to fund its ongoing development and updates, but most VNs don't lend themselves to that.

Damn
>>
>>122581108
Try finding some good reference images.
>>
>>122581108
It probably depends on your style how you want to go about this, but I would draw the boobs normally (with or without bra), then only draw some semi opaque lines where the shirt doesn't adhere to the skin (how thick these are depends on how tough the fabric is - I'd make linen lines thicker than silk lines). If you like to have lines, just draw lines thinner than those on the outside of the shirt around the semi opaque lines.

For an idea of placement, >>122581405 has the right idea. Sacrifice yourself and look at a few pictures for reference on how the fabric tends to bunch up depending on the type of garment and body type.

Does it weird anyone else out when someone asks for up front pay?
>>
>>122611331
Not really? It's a partner-seeking project so they're probably expecting to pay primarily by profit-share, and some people don't want to work for totally profit-share, so they want to know if there is ANY money actually on the table. And if there isn't, a simple 'no' should suffice, surely.
>>
>>122611331
On the "We are a Commercial Project looking for Partners" subforum, yes. Anywhere else, no, not really. It weirds me out to see full grown adults willing to do anything "for exposure" when they're not really partners in a project.

Its in the 'commercial proejct looking for partners' forum. No funds and no plan is a dead cert. Anyone posting projects in that forum should be immediately fired into space.
>>
>>122616289
It's a project looking for collaborators and the guy is implying he gets the lion's share as well as the decision on who gets what, no negotiation.
>>
>>122615698
I dunno, I wouldn't be willing to pay anyone I found on Lemma up front for writing. I would be willing to negotiate by word count, like submit X words and I'll pay Y, but I'd be extremely hesitant to pay shit up front to a writer, commercial or not.

As a writer, I don't really trust other writers not to do the stupid shit that I do.

>>
>>122616940
It was an example. If I were serious about that, I would present them with an outline to follow and if they derailed too much, they wouldn't get paid for X words unless I thought the scene worked.

Even this is just the tip of the iceburg. I don't have an instance to use this kind of set up, so for now, I haven't thought much about it.

I usually use either Sai or Photoshop or both, because each has things at which they're better:

- Use folders to organise your layers, it makes things easier (Sai's layer number limit is a bit low, though).
- I'd advise first sketching the whole cast, so you know they fit well with each other. This is more important than you might think. Afterwards you can take each of this sketches and copy them individually to their own file to ink and colour and create variations and expressions.

After I've done and got approval for my sketches I usually sketch alternate outfits and expressions on different layers so that I have the general idea down but I don't lose time with inking and colouring.

Then I just lower the opacity of the dressed sketch and create a new folder (called something like base) and draw another sketch in a different layer and colour to correct the anatomy if needed. The original sketch is usually dressed and just to work on the pose, which I want to be as expressive as possible. Adding the anatomy corrections later means that I don't get too bogged down with anatomical concerns early on and the poses hopefully don't end up too stiff.

I usually ink the hair and body on two different layers, this comes in handy later for the expressions, if you don't want the features to overlap with the hair.

Create flat colours for everything and divide things in layer folders. I usually have the Base folder (with hair and body lines and colour), the various clothes folder and the expressions folders all organised. After I laid all the flat colours (and made sure to check them against at least a dark background and a light one, possibly some shitty lime green) I start shading every flat colour on a layer grouped with it so that I don't need to worry about staying within the bounds of that colour.
>>
Once you've shaded everything and maybe even coloured your lines (by blocking their transparency first and then simply using a brush on them) you can work on the expressions. I tend to separate the sclera (the white of the eye), the iris and the rest of the features, minus the nose which is on the base. You'll probably have the irises' lines visible under the features at times, but you can just colour the skin on a layer on top of the iris and under the features, where you'll also colour the eyebrows, shade the eyes and mouth, etc.

If you're working in Photoshop, you can use layer comps: these are rather useful as they allow you to instantly see a particular layer configuration without having to turn on the visibility for several layers if your configuration is a bit complicated (eg: you use separate features to create the expressions). You can then export the separate layer comps with a script in Photoshop so you don't have to save each PNG file separately, which saves a fair bit of time. Just remember to not let Photoshop crop the images for you, otherwise you'll have differently sized PNGs and that's bad for alignment. If you want a more detailed explanation of this let me know.

It's a good idea to keep your project files organised somewhere like Dropbox: I've mis-saved more than once and that's always saved my bum as I could go back to a previous version.

One thing to remember is that you can duplicate any layer folder (say, for expressions) so that you get to just push things around a bit if the changes you want to apply are minimal or if you want something to paint over to maintain consistency.

Also remember to send your WIP to the person who commissioned or requested the sprites frequently: more than once I've found that things looked differently on my monitor or that some of the programs I used had weird quirks (like Sai not showing as much in the way of white pixels if a flat colour doesn't get exactly to the lines, compared to Photoshop).

I can kind of draw but can't write for shit.
>>
>>122658732
The first one had decent-ish art, but I couldn't stand the story and from what I remember it wasn't proofread at all.

The art that I've seen on the KS page looks at best like something I'd tolerate from a free game, but nothing I'd spend money on. That coupled with how little of a fuck I gave about the first one's story (and how little it seemed to have been proofread) is the reason why I wouldn't spend a penny on it.

I was thinking of making some porn game but with monster shotas being the main focus.

I'm going to use rpg maker and customize the battle system a bit.
But the main focus is to recruit monster boys, train them, send them to scout for items/money, and beat bosses.

The battles are non-sexual but cutscenes and defeat/win scenes are sexual.

I have no idea what the story will be though.
all I can think of is the gameplay and character designs

I hope I'm not being too much of an ideas guy because there's shit I can do, but just I need help with the story part

>>
>>122659662
how dark/light do you like your stories?

Is there a 'master' character representing the PC who recruits (and seduces) the boys, or are they just parties of boys? Do you want to get people onto your team by beating them in fights?

If you don't want to waste a lot of time on story, a simple excuse plot to get to the gameplay fast is fine: this is a School for Monster Boy Heroes, they team up and go into dungeons to try and win points towards graduation. As long as the gameplay is fun no one will care.

Possibilities for darker plots with a bit more story in them - what's the legal status of monster boys, are they slaves, are they the offspring of the PC, are they the results of the PC's mad science? Is the PC summoning monsters and sending them into the strongholds of his enemies? Are the boys fighting to the death in the hopes of gaining the right to citizenship?

more on the dark side and probably serious for some parts but none of that 'muh feels' shit, I just want a good lewd.

I think it would be cool to have a gimmick where you seduce the boys into loving you so much, they don't want to separate from you.
the boys don't have to be slaves too, they can willingly be your slave.
>>
>>122661234
*some of the boys don't have to be slaves

like they can be nobles or knights, even princes.
>>
>>122661234
Do you want the PC to go into combat with the boys as the rest of his party, so that he can seduce other boys he meets, or do you want the boys to overpower interesting monsters and bring them home for you to seduce separately from the combat part?
>>
>>122661403
seduce separately

like first you either buy a monster boy
or you can convince monster boys (in higher social classes) to join you (by certain circumstances like clearing a quest).

battles go out in a non sexual way, so not like monster girl quest where the monster tries to seduce you.
you get the sex scenes through story and after defeating/losing to bosses. If you lose to a boss, you get a scene and gameover.
>>
>>122661654
after getting your monster boy, you can interact with him and give him gifts or drug him (which leads you to a scene)
drugs are hard to get items so you won't use them alot, but you can greatly increase the monster boy's love towards you (like LP love point?)
also certain sex toys will get you to a scene (but like drugs hard to get).

also you get scenes by gaining the LP at a certain point.

if you manage to get your monster boy to fully love you, the stats of the monster boy increases a chunk as well as scenes unlock with him.

Good god, do people really spend that much on marketing?
>>
>>122688041
Well, a lot of your marketing should involve promo art and the like, and you can guarantee that's going to cost just as much as your CGs do.
>>
>>122687867
Yeah, I don't mind it used in short dramatic bits, but as it goes on it gets on my nerves. I couldn't make it through the fault milestone two demo.
>>
>>122688041
Are you trying to make games or to make money? If you want to make money, then yes, a lot of your job is marketing. Whether that involves cash or elbow grease depends somewhat on your skillset. If you know how to build up a following and network with people, if you know how to get the media to talk about you, you can get a lot of benefit for not a lot of money.
>>
I'm finding it harder and harder to keep reading EVNs, not sure why. I tried Cursed Sight's demo and just dropped it. I tried a few others and I just drop them all. It's not the same with books, sometimes I will pick up a book at any free moment just to keep reading, but EVNs just don't seem to do it.

Is there EVN you've tried, whether new or old, that you'd say you couldn't put down?
>>
>>122688041
I have no idea where they'd even put it unless they're hiring someone for PR and the only one for vn you can hire right now are barzini (if you want someone to claim your project only succeeded because of his help....)

>>122689053

Okay that makes more sense but I still wouldnt use 30% for it. a nice promo video and a custom image seem like they would cover your bases. VN are nice since you could use a CG as promo art and win-win
>>
>>122691407
Loren, but because I was super invested in Amukiki's storyline.
>>
>>122691407
VNs are tricky because they're generally not comfortable to read in the same way a book is. If you have a decent reading speed, the incessant interruptions of textboxes can be very wearying. This is somewhat compensated for by a lot of bells and whistles - animation, voice acting, etc - but those are things EVNs are lacking in.

One reason that games with gameplay often do well in the EVN market is that it breaks up the endless stream of bite-sized reading.
>>
>>122693454
>incessant
>wearying
>compensated

This is actually how I talk IRL.

I read too much.
>>
>>122693454
That makes a lot of sense to me.

Also the VA thing in evn is really annoying. I saw a quote of .08c per word for four english female voices and one was amateur/debut. I think the total was 8000 and that's not including labor of implementing. English va doesn't really sell copies like japanese ones do, so thats a ton of money to be putting into a game feature many actually hate.
>>
>>122693583
That's hardly sophisticated language.
>>
>>122693454
>If you have a decent reading speed, the incessant interruptions of textboxes can be very wearying.
I read quite fast and it doesn't bother me at all. I just customize the text speed to my liking and have at it.
>This is somewhat compensated for by a lot of bells and whistles - animation, voice acting, etc
And it's funny you mention this because I actually end up cutting off the voice because I don't have time to wait around 15 extra seconds for them to finish the end of the line unless it's a line I really want to hear. Same with animations. imo, partial voice acting is the best. You still get to hear their voice and the actually important lines are spoken.
>>
>>122658732
EVN sequels in general always make less than the previous game. Especially if the art in the first game is better than the current artist.
>>
>>122695071
>I just customize the text speed to my liking
If I turn up autoplay speed really fast then the text advances quickly enough so that I don't have to keep hammering on space, but then if I have to look away for a few seconds or want to think about something, I'm thrown completely off. It's awkward. Maybe it's just me.
>>
>>122695565
I don't use autoplay. I meant the text display speed.
>>
>http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=60&p=393968

Why do amateurs think they're entitled to 6c per word especially 10-15c? If you haven't even written an entire novel what makes you more worthy than those guys with 4-5 hoping someone will do 5c a word? You can ask for it but theres no way you're going to get it if you're not published.
>>
>>122696274
He just keeps getting told. Someone stop him.
>>
>>122696274
People don't understand the idea of pro vs amateur rates. It's the same shit as people telling artists to charge 300+ usd because that's what japs make.
>>
>>122696274
>>122696453
>>122697726
The funniest thing is those rates are far more than pro.
>>
>>122697868
It's because of the massive supply of writers looking for work and the very small number of studios who can pay. It's competitive and that drives rates down.
>>
>>122698243
There's that and also the fact 15c per word is ridiculous. When you get to the point where your stuff sells enough to charge that, it's better for everyone to work based on upfront+royalties, as it happens with famous writers.
>>
>>122693454
I don't really see many interruptions - I tend to set the text speed to instant and just advance. If anything, the way the text is presented is the last of my problems.
It's just something about the way the story unfolds.
>>
>>122698243
....basic supply and demand? lol.

>>122696274
This Jiro kid is the gift that keeps on giving. What would possibly compel someone to post in a recruitment thread when it's been established that he has no interest in writing for them, and they have no interest in working with him? First it was "I am morally offended by the fact that your group makes hentai games, you are damaging the integrity of visual novels as an art form" and now this. What does he possibly hope to accomplish through these posts, apart from making himself look like a major assclown?
>>
>>122695946
If you read slowly enough that the text speed is relevant (ie, you're not taking in the entire text box almost instantaneously) I don't think you understand.
>>
>>122699179
Maybe the standard genre tropes just aren't for you.

Have you played the demo for Analogue? (Not because it's the best game ever, but because it takes such a different approach.) Does it work any better for you?

Do you enjoy JVNs?
>>
>>122698243
How would a massive supply lead to people asking for rates that are HIGHER than pro rates? It's just because they're idiots.
>>
>trying to decide on a price for my evn
>look up steam prices
>ajtilley stuff is 15 bucks
>heileen is like 20 bucks
>grisaia is forty

damn. do people actually pay that much? i have about 45k words i was planning on selling for 4.99 (contains gameplay stuff)
>>
>>122702593
It's not that I read slow, it's how I proceed. I like to be able to click twice to make the text display. If it's instantaneous, I'll wind up skipping it by accident. If it's too slow, it doesn't look right. It needs to be just a little shy of full speed.

It's hard to explain. I may as well be using autoplay with instant text but I don't like doing it.
>>
>>122703304
What kind of gameplay? If it's interesting and your game can last a few hours, then $10-$15 might be reasonable.

Don't compare your game to Grisaia, it's absurdly long. It can take over 50 hours to read it.
>>
>>122703304

The first Grisaia game is probably close to a million words in English. You can't really compare JP game price-points to EVNs, especially in the western market.
>>
>>122703304
How long is your game and is there any gameplay?
>>
>>122703304
Direct comparisons don't always work. There's a lot that goes into the price point and the sales that a title makes. Some games are priced high but are not selling many copies. On the other hand, a game selling about 1K copies at $20 is making a lot more profit than a game selling about 1K copies at $7.

Almost every game has some complaints about it being overpriced, as well, because there's a lot of cheap bastards out there. Without being the developer you can't easily see how MANY complaints they're getting, or what percentage of their sales come in at huge discounts, and so on.

A lot of people feel AJTilley's games are greatly overpriced, and many of the customers bought in when teh game wasn't done yet so they didn't know how long it would be. Also, naked tits. These things skew the results.

If you're doing a short game with puzzle elements and no sex scenes, none of the reference points you've stated are at all relevant to you. Look at InvertMouse's releases instead.

I'm slightly put off by Analogue. I used to read CL's stuff when she was still on LSF, but her stuff got progressively worse and worse for me. Don't take it personally completely killed my interest for me.

I have liked several VNs, though the things I can think of off the top of my head are Ever 17, Remember 11, Phenomeno and True Remembrance.
>>
>>122706504
Hmm - while the JVNs you mention have good and interesting plots, the ones I know are also notable for extremely slow pacing. I'm surprised you have trouble staying interested in EVNs which generally most much, much faster. Does the speed make you feel rushed, like you're not getting enough time to enjoy it? Or is it just that you're mostly encountering EVNs that are boring weeb japan-worship with cute girls and not finding the ones that go for a plot?

Have you read Cupid?
>>
>>122706976
Nope, never heard of Cupid, I'll give that a try.

EVNs don't generally feel rushed to me, quite the opposite. I find it a bit hard to explain why, I'm trying to understand why I don't get into them as much as stuff like the Insani Altogether stuff, out of curiosity.

I tried Backstage Pass out of curiosity, too, but I quickly dropped it because I was finding it really uninteresting. Part of it might be the tropes, but it's mostly the prose, there's something about it that just makes me feel like I'm eating porridge with each word. Not particularly tasty, with a weird consistency and makes me feel bloated afterwards.

>>
>>122715540
>Customers simply do not care that much.
From my experience they actually do, because you're talking about a medium with little animation, basically no gameplay and the writing isn't always something stellar, but the "game" is supposed to have enough of a mood to really get people into it as a whole experience regardless of the innate shortcomings.

There are three angles to use here: the writing, the art and audio. People tend to forgive the writing most of all, so long as glaring mistakes aren't constant. Unfitting art keeps people away right away, and unfitting music will mess the mood up.

Finding the right stock for a scene isn't always possible, and as >>122715793
implied, to several projects, it might be a bit of a vanity thing, but it adds a lot to the character and mood of a VN when done properly. Not everyone can afford it, but if possible, can do far more good than harm.

I see people buying games with only three songs, and not even caring. I see people praising stock soundtracks just as much as most custom ones.

The EVN that I see people most talking about how great the soundtrack is would be Over The Hills And Far Away, and that didn't translate into sales.

Music is great and good music adds a lot to the polish of a game, but when it comes to a purely financial standpoint, I don't think spending more on music has nearly as much impact as spending more on art, sadly.
>>
>>122721192
>I see people praising stock soundtracks just as much as most custom ones.
Yeah I've seen that and it's really awkward. They were free songs no less
>>
>>122721192
Alternatively, I've seen people buy games with sprites from ComiPo and praise stock art, which by those standards makes paying artists a bad decision purely commercially speaking.
>>
>>122721998
I've yet to see praise for stock art aside from stock backgrounds. The issue with music is people really dont have any exposure to it except after they play your game. Art is the first thing anyone gets exposed to when it comes to your game and is often what actually convinces them to give it a go.

Not specifically, but they did give general feedback about what the entries could improve/lacked:

> Not showing how the game will work/basing a pitch around character art and lots of text
It's very hard to picture how a game will work from text alone, you need at least one good concept art of the gameplay mechanics.

> basing the pitch around expected sales numbers.

> alternatively, having no idea how/where/etc. you are going to sell the game.

> having a team with no prior experience and no individual credentials to make up for it.

> Not justifying higher budgets to potential investors
Anything higher than 50, 000 usd should include a -detailed- budget breakdown, not just percentages.

> having a bigger scope that you can realistically handle
One team had a very interesting idea about an open world exploration game, but their plan was to update the game periodically with new stuff for the players to do/find. It would also have this beautiful 3d graphics, optional 2d puzzles and be procedurally generated. And it would be for mobile.

> entering a saturated market
The people with classic platformers and metroidvanias need the strongest pitches.

> sounding bored about your game
Holy shit, this is definitely the worst you can do. I assume he was trying to be professional, but there was this guy who explained his game in the most monotonous voice ever known to man and it made the whole thing sound like a chore.

Too weeb for me
>>
>>122756724
I know people complain about random Japanese a lot, and it can be grating when people put in random Japanese words when there are perfectly good English equivalents, like 'what a kawaii neko' or whatever, but what if you're writing about some very specific Japanese concept, like Yamato Nadeshiko? Could you just 'English-ise' it as 'perfect housewife'? What about things like honorifics, with the '-chan', etc (I don't use them, but they don't bother me when I see them). Or what about things like 'anime' or 'manga'? I'm undecided if I should have characters talk about reading manga, or if I should just render it as 'comics' - the same for calling anime 'cartoons'. I worry even using words like 'manga' would be considered using gratuitous Japanese, since comics are more or less the same thing, but I'm not sure...

Oh, and another one. If you set a story in Japan, should you render chara names as family name + given name, like in Japan, or reverse it to given name + family name, like in Western countries.
>>
>>122773319
If the story is in Japan use family + given. As well as anime and manga for any cartoon or comic.
>>
>>122773319
I don't mind when it's stuff like 'senpai', which is sometimes translated as 'senior' and sounds really out of place to me. I've never heard someone call someone else 'senior', so I'd rather they just made the connection with the Japanese culture it comes from. I'm OK with either using or omitting the suffixes, you can give the same impression - at least in dubbed media - with the inflection of the voice, or with the general attitude towards a character.

Anime and Manga are such common words that I wouldn't really replace them, particularly in case you did want to introduce western cartoons or comics later on.

For names: if the character addressing someone is Japanese themselves and the story is set in Japan, I'd use their order. If you have one Japanese transfer student move to Europe, I'd expect everyone would use the given name + family name order.

What causes someone you hired to be so slow? I mean I'm not a psycho who freaks out about a 1-2 week gap every now and then, they have a life, but when the norm is huge gaps in communication
>>
>>122865127
What are the kind of gaps you would complain about, then?

Anyway, possible explanations:

- They're not ready for this: they gave you an estimate deadline and feel they can't cover it about half way through and think that if they just pull off a few all-nighters, they'll manage. Except it backfires and they're way too tired all the time to be properly productive. Emailing you when they realised they were behind would have been the right choice, but now they feel like shit about it and decide that the best course of action is to stick their head under the sand.
- They're in high school and don't even understand the concept of "deadline". If you didn't give them a hard (deadline) one, they probably think it's fine to do stuff when they're not burdened by all the Fallout 4 playing and random wanking off.
- They might be dead. Oh, well.
>>
>>122865127
In my experience:
>not giving them a deadline
>not giving them projections / a production plan in general
>not telling them to update by this day every week
>not following through replies ASAP
>too hyped at the start but it dies down
>>
>>122865127

I'm sorry for asking that here, but how the bloody do I use fonts with Ren'Py?

I mean, the computer has a few fonts on the Windows/Fonts folder. Okay. Ren'Py can use them, no problem.
I also know how to make Ren'Py use a specific font.

The problem I have is that I don't know how to load the font directly in Ren'Py. Basically, if anyone want to use my game, he has to install the font on his computer or the game doesn't work.
How do I fix that? I tried googling that problem, but all I could find was a "cookbook" about how to save only letters that are used in the game and reduces the weight of the font files.
>>
>>122874169
just put the font file you want to use in with the other files of your game - say if you want to use comic sans, find where your fonts are saved on your computer, copy and paste the comic sans file into the folder where your renpy game assets are, and then you can call it in your script.
>>
>>122874582
That's all?
I tried putting it in a separate folder, and you're telling all I had to do was dumping it with the rest?

And how do I "call it in the script"?
I just write
style.default.font = "ComicSans.ttf"
right?
>>
>>122872936
Same here.
>>
>>122874681
You can put it in whatever folder, you just need to direct it to the folder "fonts/comic sans.ttf". But yeah additionally just dumping it into the main game folder works.

Messing around with the 3D camera code. This is probably faster and simpler than just doing it manually.
I wonder if a similar feature will make it into ren'py by default at some point.

Looking at Sekai Project's catalog on Steam, it looks like Yohjo Simulator has been removed. I wonder if was because the game was early access quality at best, or because of the loli.

Where can I find pretty-ok stock music? I'd like to have some just to get a feel of what mood would be best for a scene.

To keep on topic, here's progress of getting shitty bgs done until we get an actual artist for it.
>>

Or if they are MLanon.

I'm not mlanon. Does she even need sekai? Their Just get a better presence on tumblr and she'll be set

>>122891856

I was referring to the "no one ever posts about their game part unless it's vague shit", since she posts frequently.
>>
>sekai
What do they even do? All I ever see on twitter are alienworks and fault milestone 1&2 reblogs in a sea of jvn stuff.
>>
>>122892174
I was talking of the vast majority of users in these threads, MLanon is obviously the one exception.
>>
>>122892832
That's not totally true. There's like, two others who post things they're working on for games that aren't their own, but that sort of counts, right?

I don't post about my game here since you are all vicious cunts. I can't claim the high ground, though, since I've joined in on several occasions

>>122892646
They don't have that many EVN's that aren't Alienworks or the Sakura Games, so of course it's mostly JVN's. There hasn't been a real update from Starlight Vega or No One But You or whatever other games they have in ages.
>>
>>122898019
>They don't have that many EVN's
>http://pixelpacas.com/complete-list-of-sekai-project-published-games/

Seems like they have a lot.
>>
>>122898019
>Starlight Vega
Now there's a game that had absolutely no reason to work with Sekai. They could have just done this on their own and reaped the rewards.
>>
>>122898787
Of those, the ones that aren't completed titles and that I didn't mention before include:
-Order of Ataxia
-Rising Angels
-Purrfectly Ever After
-Sunrider

Sunrider promotes itself, but I guess I'll admit that those other three don't get much attention.
>>
>>122899028
Really? Sekai seems to love yuri and cultivating an audience for it. It's better off than a BL or otome game.
>>
>>122899242
If you have any talent, you don't need Sekai as a publisher.
>>
>>122899121
>-Purrfectly Ever After

This was a case of them not knowing how to promote themselves, because the game is pretty decent and as an otome, should have been able to raise the money they needed without Sekai.
>>
>>122898019
They have Taosym, Sierra Ops, and IDHAS at the very least. Considering the amount of promotion, I'm amazed they haven't split.
>>
>>122899413
>This was a case of them not knowing how to promote themselves, because the game is pretty decent and as an otome, should have been able to raise the money they needed without Sekai.
So, what does Sekai do again, other than sponging off a dev?
>>
>>122899413
Yeah if you have an otome you really only need tumblr and maybe facebook. It's also why a lot of otome evn just do direct sales. Steam means nothing to them.
>>
>>122899517

"Marketing". The only reason I can see for needing Sekai is that if not being able to set up a company in a KS-approved country for some reason.
>>
So you guys dont think sekai directs enough sales and traffic to be worth it? I'm the guy before thinking about pitching to them
>>
>>122900472
Ask yourself what you are getting and what you are giving in return.
>>
>>122900472
I don't think you or any of us in this thread could really know that without having sales data. It's just the usual shitflinging that /evn/ does.
>>
>>122900472
It's all just a bunch of supposition from people who have never released a commercial game of their own or even approached Sekai at all. Take it with a block of salt.
>>
>>122900472
When you pitch to them, ask them what they would be able to provide for you and your VN. If you don't find their answer satisfactory, don't work with them.
>>
>>122900635
True. There's not a whole lot of info and their "bigger" games aren't even close to being out. Sunrider and the sakura series sell themselves. Stuff like asphyxia is too strange to base numbers on.
>>
>>122901534

Considering that it's their cut + steam cut, you don't need a lot of info to know that you have to think twice and then again about how much benefit they will actually bring you.

Also, there was an article about their released games vs ongoing projects and yikes, it doesn't look like they are a big enough company to suppor that many things going on at the same time.
>>
>>122870515
id like a link for this one too, anyone know of a similar game to this?
>>
>>122904003

>>
>>122904284
thank you very much, i dont normally play vn's so i didnt know of the usual sources for downloads, I'll keep an eye on that site.
>>
>>122904431
We don't usually share evn here but we all hate ajtilley and hope he fails so yeah just wait for them to get ahold of it.
>>
>>122906487
/evn/ is a bunch of hypocritical fucks who think pirating games is abhorrent unless you're someone they don't like. I'm looking forward to seeing your games up as well.
>>
If anyone actually wants to ask anything about Sekai Project, let me know. I'm sending some questions to Raith at least, since Sekai themselves never answer anything about themselves and only about their projects.
>>
>>122907891
>I'm looking forward to seeing your games up as well.

dude, you just... report them. Hell, I'd say evns links are more likely to be taken down because there's no language barrier and the dev is lurks the usual places where links are posted.
>>
>>122907891
My game will be up there. Pirating is a fact of life for a dev.
>>
>>122908219
Have fun getting nyaa or erogedownload to feel bad for you.
>>
>>122908597
Do you not know how this works? You send a C&D to the host of the files, not to the people linking them.
>>
>just trying to catch up on twitter
>like 40 tweets from deji about her dream or some shit from the other night
This is actually the most frustrating thing. I think my upper limit is 10 consecutive tweets (and that's pushing it, even if its all related to projects) but THAT MANY is ridiculous.
Why do people mix their work and personal twitters?
>>
>>122907969
The only thing anyone would care about hearing is the money aspect which they have kept under wraps like a normal business would.

>>122908839
Well I'm sure they've never gotten those before. I'm sure they're also really easy to find like most pirate website owners are.
>>
>>122909251
There's nothing all that wrong with that. The issue is using twitter as a longform blog posting service. Just post it literally anywhere else, fuck. Even twitlonger is retarded because you know that post doesn't belong on twitter, why not just post it in a blog and link to the blog?
>>
>>122909251

what you prompt me to buy it but now you're telling me I'll regret it?

what are you getting at exactly?
>>
>>122914217
His games aren't very good, that game in particular has a bunch of fake choices and very little replay value. You're better off pirating.
>>
>>122914217
I didnt encourage you to buy that, its more than me and you here you know. That dev is notorious for putting out really bad evn with buggy or missing features. He also flags negative reviews.
>>
>>122914457
alright then you shouldnt wind me up trying to goad me into buying it then, if i enjoy it after I finish the pirated version I'll buy a legit copy from that site, however if its a letdown then he gets no money from me.

Is that fair enough?
