Alliance and Horde were fighting each other on their sea ships, blowing themselves up. Survivors swam to the nearby island covered in mists, which happened to be Pandaria, discovering the Pandaren inhabiting it. Varian wants to save his lost son who went missing around this area. Garrosh wants to dominate this new land. Garrosh causes problems with the Sha and the Horde hate him anyway, leading to the Siege of Orgrimmar.
He loses, and with the help of some bullshit Bronze Dragon guy who really did come out of nowhere, he goes back in time and space, arriving on Draenor 35 years ago. He kills the Bronze Dragon because his deus ex machina purpose has been fulfilled. Garrosh no longer has an army thanks to the Horde revolting, so he uses his knowledge of the future to convince the Orc clans under his name, changing events in the timeline, such as no longer drinking Mannoroth's blood, instead using the power of future machinery to power their raid on Azeroth.
We fuck them all up and Gul'dan gets orcs drinking Mannoroth's blood anyway, but we also fuck them up. Then he resurrects Mannoroth and he fails. Then he opens the Black Portal for Archimonde and he fails. So Archimonde throws Gul'dan through his own portal. Gul'dan was probably told by Sargeras on the other side where to go on Azeroth to get even more failures through a portal, and we track down the failures to the Broken Isle, where they're being summoned

With Mannoroth defeated, Gul'dan tries to bring an even stronger demon to Draenor, opening the Black Portal for Archimonde. And just like Mannoroth, we defeat him almost straight away in HFC.

Archimonde uses his last remaining power to throw Gul'dan through the Black Portal. There has to have been a massive Legion presence on the other side of the portal, because it's Archimonde, one of the two most powerful demons of the Legion, below Sargeras himself. Gul'dan is still serving the Legion, so he probably found Sargeras himself, or maybe Kil'Jaeden, before ending up on Azeroth with a plan in mind, on the Broken Isles.

Yes, the failures are demons. We kept on killing them throughout tBC, we went through Warlords, eventually fighting the Legion at the end and we even stopped Mannoroth and Archimonde, one right after the other. I don't think a few weaker demons will succeed, no matter how many there are.

This is the part that gets me. Illidan has betrayed the Legion many times in his lifetime. Why would the Legion think he'll serve them this time? I want to think Illidan was put in the crystal by Sargeras for a similar reason to Ner'zhul being put in the Lich King's armour; some form of eternal torture. And just like Ner'zhul, Illidan finds a way to use others for his goals. Which would probably be your character.
