So as much as I appreciate SO adding subs the game just doesn't feel good to play. It fittingly feels like a cheap chinese knockoff. It's a shame because it does have some things over WoWS and the torps feel viable because they're balanced around limited ammo and no lead indicator like in navyfield so skill actually matters. The spotting system and sound effects are also great. Having radio range like in WoT reinforces teams sticking together and being able to hear distant gunfire alerts you to where the fight is with zero input from other players. Howerver unlike WoWS, and even navyfield2, ships have no weight so you can see ships literally stop on a dime to avoid your torpedoes.

Also the UI is a total clusterfuck and the controls are terrible.

I hope they fix some of this because I want to see WoWS have some actual competition to keep the slavs honest.

my thoughts on steel ocean:

it's amazing how the chinks have managed to add the gameplay features people have been asking for since fucking forever. they have subs, controllable AA/secondaries, fast torps with nice reload speeds, night battles, and a huge roster

that said, it fucks up in a lot of ways in the movement system is just clunky as hell, you have to change your binds so that you can continually sail. as a result most people just sit around, it's a fucking boat game

WoWs and steel ocean are both shit for different reasons but right now WoWs is shit mainly because it's the epitome of wasted potential, it's like warframe all over again

at least memefront is coming out soon so i'll have something to play

Houshou is the inferior of the two T4 CVs right now though, unfortunately. It's easier for an uptiered CV to bully her completely out of the fight (and this happens all the time, when your uptiered CV pal is a complete retard and effectively doesn't exist because he took something like strike Bogue or something).

Langley on the other hand always has something to contribute, and frankly doesn't lack all that much in DPS either if you can make good drops.

Houshou's two wings of 4 are slightly more forgiving but when you learn to hit Langley's single wing of 7 reliably, there's not a whole lot of difference. Especially since Langley's spread is so much tighter and so leaves far less margin for skilled captains to dodge.

Playing a low tier CV is kind of different. CV gameplay is highly competetive since there is no more than 4 of you in the match. People who just got their first CVs don't know what they are doing. You will often end up having games where you completely obliterate enemy Hoshou's squadrons or Langleys doing nothing at all. You will have a much better idea of what CVs are like playing RJ.

I'm a retard and don't know what a strike loadout is.

I usually just start the match by having both TBs go around the sides with the fighter sweeping ahead.

Having 2 tb can be pretty good for pincir moves though, I usually set one to auto target and the other on standby to manual target him when he switches directions, or for a simultaneous two pronged torpedo salvo.

Sucks that the fighter is inferior to the Langley's and I can't upgrade yet due to plans to get dogfighting expert, so I'm stuck with terribad fighters.

One way to use 2 TB squads is to place them in position beforehead select both simultaniously using shift+key and do the manual drop. This way your target won't stand a chance. Langleys can't do that.

Nowadays a non-upgraded Langley squadron can annihilate a Midway squadron with a 700% boost in firepower.

Strike loadout is the shittiest Bogue loadout: two wings of divebombers and one of torpedo bombers. No fighters to so much as clear out a floatplane fighter, so of course this loadout gets bullied to hell and back, and often winds up being less XP than a Langley.

I don't think it should be happening by the way. Even with boosts to firepower lower tier planes still have a lot less HP. For example tier 3 IJN fighters with +700% damage boost have 184 units of damage per second but their health is still 590. Hakuryuu's J8s have only 87 damage but thei HP is 1970. 87/590 is greater than 184/1970. Don't forget that boost is temporary and that Houshou doesn't have upgrades Hakuryuu does. Low tier fighters will have more advantage over squads 1 to 3 tiers above them, really high tiers still have advantage.

Well, sometimes even IJN fighters shoot down USN even without bugs, it's all a honorary lottery after all.

It's not even like I was in the super speedy Kongou. I was in Nagato, he had some 12-15 knots on me and burned it all because he was so trigger happy with his torps on either side of his ship that he'd rather make sure he could fire them whenever they were up rather than just steaming straight ahead, prow facing my guns for just a few seconds to get a much better angle.

Its weird. Torp's are a completely mixed bag. Sometimes a few torp hits are all thats needed to nuke something, and other times 5 torp hits wont do a goddamn thing. I've seen it all. Fuckin' RNG makes this shit stupid sometimes - It's more forgivable if your playing an IJN torp ninja, but completely unforgiving if your going for that 2km-or-less slavic suicide rush.

Hosho has 5 Tier 3 1MFs, Each with 23(First slot module)/619.5(4th level captain skill), versus Hakuryu Tier X J8N1s, the damage is boosted to 700%. This yields a total of 805/3098 power.

Meanwhile, one Hakuryu fighter squadron has 96(+9)/2462.5, this yields a total of 480/12313

Divide each squadron's health with the opposite's attack power, It will take about 6.45 seconds to wipe Hosho's fighters on optimal conditions, while it takes 15.3 seconds to take out a Hakuryu squadron optimally.
That's actually quite true that Hakuryu fighters will win Hosho's...

It isn't actual damage, it's a possibility. Planes that don't blow up instanty don't take any damage at all.

When you're flipping a coin you don't get both heads and tails in every series of two flips even if possibility of each is 0.5, it takes a big number of trials to get exactly exact number of heads or tails.

Let's say possibility to take out a Houshou's plane every seconds is p(a) = 5*105/619.5 = 0.85 with full J8 squad and Hakuryuu doesn't lose any planes at all. It will take approximately 6 seconds to shoot them all down but if you're at least lucky enough to live everyday life without accidents it will take exactly 5 seconds and you still have p(b) = (1-0.85)^2 = 0.02 possibility of not shooting any plane down after 2 seconds of engagement while Houshou may have two good rolls and destroy 2 planes. That's why I think damage/HP for one plane is a bit more informative of a characteristic than total HP/total damage.

I feel at this point torps either need to go faster or get lower detection. I basically use them to shotgun ships now because hitting anything at a distance is impossible. There are times when the guy is a fucking idiot and he'll take 3-4 but that's so rare it's not worth it.
Being a DD is hard out there and WG only makes it harder due to players who can't play the game.

If you're talking about WoWS, there's a /vg/ clan, KUMA. It's in the OP. Not much use in joining yet though, since clan tags are not displayed, there is no clan chat nor clanwars.

Just join the /vg/ channel. It's the one made by an antibullyranger. Lately it has been kind of empty at primetime, with the release of Fallout 4 and the latest bugged patch, but you might find 2 or 3 people playing. Maybe more on weekends. If we are not AFK or already in a division, we usually accept.

Myself, I play at T7-9 range lately but I could play some T5's.

To understand how this works, the rows determine your fighters, while the column determines your opponent fighters, a green box means that you have an advantage over the opponent, while a red one means you have a disadvantage, Blue and white means that a matchup is a fair game.

WG has not mentioned the exact duration of the boost, but who cares when you have the initial advantage to get rid of a few planes first so that the remainder of the fight goes to your favour?

The tradeoff? Your fighter's combat power does nothing to ships. So it's a choice, do you want to consistently win against opposing fighters or do you want to survive longer outside of combat?

This spreadsheet does not deal with fighters versus TBs and DBs, but the boost still applies.

It does seems that disengaging and reengaging can reset the ability.

Aim at the waterline, right below the smokestacks or slightly behind them.

At 4km, your shells follow an almost flat trajectory, so you want to hit the lowest part of the belt for the chance to get a citadel hit.

The Citadel, in case you don't know, is the most armored area in a ship. It's where the ammo and engines are located. Penetrating it does lots of damage.

T3 and T4 BBs of both lines are absolute piles of shit, even skilled captains will find themselves at a loss. From T5 on though they start pulling their weight, and a skilled captain will be more than capable of carrying his fair share of the team to victory.

Sweet spot for IJN is T5-7 (every single one of these BBs brings something unique to tier to the table) while USN peaks notably at T6 and T8. (and then there's T10, but >implying)

If you're matched up against an airsup loadout, your goal isn't the longgame but to make the two-three waves you can push/sneak through his aircover count enough to tip the scales, because then you're pulling more weight than the enemy CV, and that's all you have to do to do your job.

That's not to say you should suicide your planes wantonly, though - if you CAN catch his fighters off guard with yours (say, by pinning them within your team's overlapping AA auras as they try and chase your bombers a bit too far) you should.

Not if you double torp him at the beginning of the game. This is Hosho's primary aim, to do so within two minutes of the match starting. Distract his fighters by having them chase your fighter squad around, then sink the fucker as quickly as you can because it's your only chance. With practice you can pull it off 60% of the time.

tl;dr: This is why when you slam a ship with a torp spread with way more torps than "should" have killed it, it sails away merrily (albeit at low health). What happened was that it caught those torps on the same section of ship which caused the later torpedoes to deal very little and eventually literally zero damage.

What this means on the player end is that you should never take 100 to 0'ing a ship with a very tight and clustered torpedo barrage for granted, and that you should spread it out just a little bit, even by a few pixels, not just to reduce the chance of evasion but to ensure that one section of the ship doesn't swallow up the entire barrage. This applies for all classes of ship - lots of DDs can actually survive two torpedoes to the exact same section of the ship if they're still at 100% HP.

This especially applies at extremely close range. As a battleship I've had DDs charge me, scrape by my secondaries and most of an HE salvo to slam me with torps while on their last legs, only for their hastily fired, completely unspread salvo to get soaked up by my midships section for me to limp away at some 15-20% HP after I kill them with my second volley. Fire your torpedoes so that they hit all over your target. It's a hard thing to think about at that close range, but remember that your torpedoes take even longer to reload than his guns, and his secondaries will rack up damage at that close range!

And yes I do sneak my tb around to hunt their cv at the start but the damage is never enough to kill, the lowest I got one was to like 15% hp, after that run I just go back to providing air support.

It takes a braindead captain to die outright to one pass of 2x4 TB wings, especially if he's able to catch any of them at all with his fighters as your own set up the angles needed for a good strike. Even in a slow-ass Langley. The more common result is he's going to get away with 10-50% of his HP remaining (depending on success and luck). TBs simply don't do that much damage.

Now your own aircraft now have to roundtrip across literally the entire map, as opposed to merely having to travel to the centerish and back.

CVcide at T4 is what you do when it's 2x Housho versus 2x Langley. There's literally no hope of winning the midmap airsup battle there, so you bait both fighter wings with a seemingly out of position and confused fighter wing while your ball of four TB wings sneaks around to club one of the langleys and put it down in one shot.

Bigger damage number =/= more income. It's about % damage dealt to player ships.

Taking a DD from 100 to 0 earns you just as much money as a BB from 100 to 0, but one of these takes a single torpedo and the other can take upwards of four or five.

"150K damage" can mean just three BBs, or it can mean two BBs and two-three CLs, etc.

This is just another reason why you have to be retarded to mindlessly shoot other BBs as a BB. People who sincerely believe the damage number is linear with income do that because they think that that number directly multiplies into money, when they could delete two CLs in the same time it takes them to brawl one BB to death and earn twice as much cash.

As for the T5 versus T4 argument, I'd argue that all my stats involving Isokaze are better than Minekaze to the point where the multiplier is overwhelmed, but that's just me.

I don't get what you're saying.

BBs are tough but relatively easy to hit and ridiculously visible.

DDs are fragile but the good ones never stay visible for long or at all, either sniping outside of their visibility range or invisifiring (whether behind smoke or because lol Gearing).

I like the system of rewarding % damage done to players. It means that I get the same reward economically as it does for the teams - remove one player from the game either way, get the same amount of cash. Kill players as fast as you can - that is to say, focus fire them - instead of just whacking sandbags for big damage numbers because you want to buy your next ship and you're blocked on cash.

There are no good DDs. Most of them sit behind corners until someone stumbles into torp range, then they get knocked out by cruisers after dropping all their torps. It's way easier to just wait around near islands for DDs to poke their heads out, then to blow them up with HE, than to risk wading into range of a BB's guns or trying to get at the enemy CV.

Anon, that's not really RNG, that's just balancing so you don't have battleships moving at full speed with mega accuracy. They are already the strongest class in game.

And getting into knifefighting range is only done in an IJN DD for a few reasons:

-You absolutely positively MUST contest a cap (read: the instawin centerpoint or home base) and there are multiple cappers, too many to reliably track with guns to reset with shells before dying.

-One flank of your fleet has fallen and you can't get out of the collapsing pocket of enemy ships at all (or without essentially removing yourself from the fight entirely as you uselessly steam in full reverse for like half the map, aka the rest of the game), so you pick a direction and try to either kill your way through it or simply go out in a blaze of glory. (This is how half my deaths occur, because about half the time, the part of the team you're not directly assisting fails completely. Of course, the other half of the time, they wipe the floor with the enemy.)

-You ran facefirst into a fellow ninja IJN DD out of nowhere and now each of your respective teams is firing everything they have into the other spotted DD. (This is how the other half of my deaths occur. Running into fellow ninjas happens so often I flat out consider it a phase of the game. It's rare that I slip into torpedo range uncontested, and that means somewhere along our fleet the enemy is doing the same, so it's a tradeoff. It's okay to die in this phase if you were able to spot shelling to swat the enemy DD yourself; parity is sometimes the best you can hope for.)

-You were sailing blindly around/through an island chain like a chode and didn't know about the blob of ships on the other side. (Seriously, I avoid islands more in my Isokaze than I do in Nagato.)

-It's endgame, the last BB is steadfast in keeping his stern pointed in the direction he knows you're coming from, so you absolutely MUST charge well into your visibility range to land a torpedo spread on him. (Don't do this as long as a single CL can dump shells on you in the process.)

-There's a lone CV and you don't give a shit.

You know what class I fucking hate to play? Mid-tier CLs. I feel like I'm just floating around, a big ol' highly visible easily cittable hunk of steel. My purpose is to screen away DDs for BBs but then I can't provide AA coverage when the TBs decide to go the other flank, and then at some point when I have to risk a turn away from the enemy fleet I get citted right at the broadside of my turn and I die.

In a DD I can control my fate most of the time by knowing how to dance in and out of torpedo range while staying out of visibility. In a BB I can control my fate most of the time by knowing where I should be relative to enemy ships and having the tankiness to survive reorienting my ship should the situation change on me. CLs can't sneak around nor can they tank long enough to survive a course change. I just can't grok them at all.

No speed does not effect accuracy. Though it will slow the time it takes for the targeting circle to get smaller. The fastest way is to sit still in the water. Turning your turrets or boat will reset the aiming circle.

Though since you can actually aim your secondaries and manually aim your guns, you can just spam bullets at the enemy until they die.

The problem with your entire argument is that you don't need to be laser accurate to hit the broadside of a fucking barn. Seriously, basic fucking aiming will have you hitting 70-80 percent of your shots.

Except you do, if you even so much as turn an inch your spread will be quadruple the size it was, which causes a huge problem when trying to shoot a faster target, or leading ahead of a target that went from 0 to 30 in 2 seconds.

For bbs you can just sit in some corner and never have to turn, but other ships actually have to do more than move their aim an inch.

No you don't. Actually fucking think ahead, plan out your shots and or barrages. If this is too hard, use your secondaries.
Instead of trying to just blindly aim at the target, think ahead of where they are going to go and then shoot prepare your turrets to go where they are going to be.
Use your Secondaries between reloads to maximize your damage potential.
Also for BBs that sit in the corner they are bad. Its the exact same as WoWs. Except in this game CVs are barely a threat and DD torpedos are always visible.

In a BB I'd be inclined to believe you, their dispersions are stupidly huge as is that any change to it is negligible.

In the case of fair games, one should always take that engagement if their planes are higher tier, because Dogfighting Expert boost isn't permanent (but it can be resetted by disengaging and reengaging).

The tradeoff is that your fighters have a lower rate of survival outside of combat (bote AA), so either you want to brute force fighter duels and annihilate bombers quickly, or have hardier fighters that last in open fields.

CA are really fun. You get the high angle camera shit battleships do for your main guns, plus torpedoes, and scout planes if you go with glorious nippon.

They also keep great armor with decent speed so you can fucking dunk on DD's with your guns if you avoid their torps, while still fucking up BB's with your torps or plunging shots from long ranges.

The downside is hitting subs with your depth charges is borderline impossible with how sluggish the turn rate is.

If it had more players at the moment, a serious contester to WoWs.

The graphics are slightly worse, the pay off is much more content.
Everything is manual.
Even AA and secondaries.
CVs are not click to win and require much more skill.
BBs are strong as shit.
Many different maps.
Night battles with star burst flares.

The downside is that the botes feel like RC cars sometimes, but you get used to it.
Its definitely a decent game. Also the devs are so much less jewish its crazy.

Better shooting mechanics, better CV mechanics.
All ammo is limited, even torpedos for DDs and cruisers.

There are very few maps without islands, meaning that you can easily get the drop on BBs and torpedo them to death.
Ships have much less HP in this game. Number bloat isn't the same. On the other hand, torpedos are much more devastating in this game compared to WoWs.
There is no magical repair my HP button.

Armor is definitely taken into account in this game.
DBs are horrifyingly effective when they hit. TBs are hard to land but devastating. All are easy to shoot down when you manually control your AA.

Do not bother trying to attack destroyers, they are much too agile. Fighting other subs is all about waiting for them to be submerged at shallow water or on the surface, otherwise the combination of agility and deep water immersion will defeat your torpedoes. Cruisers are slightly less agile than destroyers. Everyone else is a good catch for you.

Burger carriers are good at shooting down shitty IJN players, but that's the only thing they can do until tier 9. A good IJN player will run circles around a burger player thanks to the sheer amount of squadrons he gets. You can either go full fighter load out and be useless to your team in all aspects except guarding against bombers, or you can go balanced or strike and hope the IJN guy went strike too, because if he didn't, his fighter swarm will eat you alive.

That being said, Midway was once the most OP ship in the game, until the fighter bug happened.

Shes undergunned and her torps would be useless at that tier.

Historically, the class was redesignated as a Light Cruiser, even though she was built as a destroyer. Her guns and speed work as great as a Tier 5 fast and fragile CL.

Otherwise, she should be tier 7 or 8 to compete with the Kiev and Tashkent in terms of speed, if not in armament.

She'll probably be a premium anyway.

What makes it seem better is the penetration mechanics are more forgivable and ships have significantly less health, so while you would need a citadel to do any reasonable damage to another ship in one salvo, SO if a full salvo hits any ship that's a huge chunk of health gone.

Hell.. in CBT, the ONLY thing I really feared in my Minekaze was other IJN DD... If the match had none, I knew I'd be in for a good time. Even against other IJN DD (Hatsu and above) the match 'could' go well for the following reason:

Back then she had 10km torps with 5.8km detection range meant you had 4.2km wiggle room to play with every 35-ish seconds. And while you had 5.8km everything you'd be fighting had 6.7(6.5 for hatsuhara I think?) or more so almost a full kilometer to adjust your course to maintain stealth.

She was like the soviet tier 1's in War Thunder.. Could do well even at higher tiers.(And if 'flooding deals 40% of your HP' was a thing back then like it is now? Sweet jesus, the damage resulting from all that map denial would have been so much higher. )
I consistently had more fun queing with my buddy in his jet with me in full soviets T-1's, than I had with my messershit rocket plane.

(Back before the 1.29 fuel change messershit was a god... an incredibly expensive god with a hell of a lot of bugs, and the requirement to either not die, or kill 8 jets to JUST BREAK EVEN on your repair costs didn't help before that patch.. and made it worse after.)

WoWS is notably more polished but is rife with bad balancing decisions. It's not P2W, rather pay to not kill yourself past tier 7.
Steel Ocean is a literal cheap chinese knockoff. It has definite gameplay advantages over WoWS, but at the same time is more of an arcadey mess than even WoT. It's RC botes with WoT aiming mechanics. It actually feels like you're steering toys rather than huge warships.

Wow, had my first decent game in the Furutaka, and I've had this ship a while. Its nothing to write home about, but its the first game where I really felt like I knew what to do, and how to fight in it. I also had a pretty easy time hitting with these 203's, and I'm not sure why. Eyeballing ranges always seemed to never work.

So yeah, maybe my IJN ennui isn't so complete, and I can actually have fun in nipper ships again.

For his videos from the last 2 years he has been doing a rather in depth brief history on a plane/tank/bote whenever he reviews it/showcases one.
