Yes, Asriel's body died, but his soul should actually remain, considering it is to some degree human.

This also makes me ask the question that when Chara possesses Frisk in the bad route, is Asriel in there somewhere too, trying to stop you from killing?

Could the reason why Frisk isn't possessed by Chara in the true route be that Asriel is actually preventing Chara from doing so? Or perhaps Asriel possessed Frisk himself, influencing Fris towards the true ending?

Finally, if Chara/Asriel's joint soul eventually fades away, as is implied in the true ending, doesn't this mean that Asriel will eventually die? If your SOUL is "you" then Flowey is only a phantom, and Asriel is truly dead.

How do save/reset powers actually work temporally, and what are the implications?

Case 1: global
If they work globally, a) the underground is exactly as old as the overworld and b) Flowey must have allowed things to continue for longer than he 'usually' does in the iteration that Frisk appears, since it's the first time that anything has interrupted his abilities.

Case 2: local
If resets work only within the domain of the barrier, it can be assumed that significantly less time has passed in the overworld, since the underworld has exclusively been subject to numerous resets to a particular point in it's own history whilst the overwold continues on.
