It's going to be hard for us to agree on everything, but i am curious as of what you alds think would be the ultimate hack and slash game. I will start with something that i think we all would agree with and has not much to do with gameplay.

DmC's final fight was very decent and it made the whole game worth it. It's a very decent game that gets too much shit. Still, compared to DMC3, it's a bad game, yes.

if Ninja gaiden black had more depth in its combat and didn't have only 2-3 moves/combos that were viable, it would probably be the best hack and slash game out there. Make it somehow like DMC4, with the enemy variety of Bayonetta and yet don't make the enemies be juggle sandbaggs like in DMC3 but not as stiff as ninja gaiden. It's really fucking hard to make a definitive combat system. One thing is for sure, no witch time cheating. If you do have a witch time thing, then make the window really close, like 3 frames, and also make it not possible to spam the dodge button like in bayonetta. The Dodge in DMC4 is pretty amazing but at the end of the day, it doesn't do anything besides style.

A game with God Hand's combat, but more developed, better level design and more enemy types would be nice.
I don't think that hitting people with a sword is as satisfying generally as punching them is.
MGR is pretty good, but I don't think DMC is, besides Nero's Devil Bringer.

Anyone that says style switching is needed is immediately going to ruin the game. Style switching is an archaic way to change up inputs, and most of the commands can just be put in the bast moveset, as Bayonetta proves.

Bayonetta's Witch Time, however, is far too powerful, and not just because of the slow down it gives. It also grants double points, generates massive amounts of magic for Torture Attacks, etc.

I'd argue that superforms (Devil Trigger) are much more "fair", as you can still be damaged and staggered.

No More Heroes had a witch time that only lasted <2 seconds, and required very frame specific timing. The second the slowdown ended the enemies you were hitting would block and stagger you out of a combo.

The main problem with action games these days is that enemies don't hit hard enough, they don't defend themselves, and the player has way too many ways to beat the shit out of enemies without punishment.


All in all a good action game needs open-ended combat without walling it entirely behind needlessly convoluted shit like jump cancelling or stance switching, and without making the combat completely nonthreatening.

Must have both the style system from DMC 3 and the bayonetta witch time on dodge system. but allow the bonus you get from close dodging to change depending on what style you have.

Royal guard - instagib the enemy that you dodged (unless a boss or hard enemy)

Trickster - blink between a few enemies doing damage

Swordmaster - Multiply melee damage for a short time

Gunslinger - All ranged attacks bounce between enemies for a few seconds

Doppelganger - Multiply number of doppelgangers for a short time (no limit to number)

Quicksilver - Same as normal witch time

Also the game has have the SSStylin system.

Basically, yeah. You block and then tilt the stick left or right the frame after being struck and he'll slide in that direction and time will slow down for about 1.5 seconds. When it ends the enemy will immediately block and stagger you, keeping the player from exploiting the huge amount of damage they just did.

I can't think of anything. Maybe some horror game like alien isolation. It would ruin the games' atmosphere, arguably.

Fighting games are purposely convoluted to increase the skill cap, and the input to cancel the animation is fairly simple.

Style switching locks entire movesets behind arbitrary button presses for no real reason.

The important part of these games is the character kit, so long as the levels give us the opportunity to play around with that enough it's fine. there's a reason why people play dozens of hours of bloody palace even though its just an arena that spawns waves of enemies. Also Nier A isn't really the same kind of game as this

Nobody would give a flaming fuck about DMC1 in 2017 if it didn't have good level design; but it does, so a lot of people still love it.
