It was because of some PlayStation Eye Camera Gimmick, Distinguishing different controllers per user by colors, and I think The Last of Us used it for immersion purposes (flashlight)

Depending on the color, it lets you know which player the controller is bound to in the game, but I guess you wouldn't know.

plus certain games use it as ana extension of the gameplay
last of us, and tomb raider have it light up and change colours depending on if you use a torch or flashlight

I know on some games it's supposed to show your health. Killzone Shadow Fall did this.

When my girlfriend was playing Lego Harry Potter I noticed it would change colors depending on the spells she would use.

I may be wrong about this one but I think the new Thief had some kind of feature for it. Seems like it would change colors depending on if you were spotted or not. But I've not played that game since It released so I'm not sure.

Nothing special really. Kind of underutilized. I would like to see them actually try something fun with it.
