What are some fighting games that are active on Steam? I've never played a fighting game in my life, but it seems like a cool genre to get into.

Dark souls
Absolver

SFV
Tekken 7
SFV has crossplay, on the other hand it kinda sucks

I'm wondering which game would be the best for a beginner when it comes to fighting games.

Guilty Gear Rev 2 is active-ish. You'll never find a ranked match but there are always player lobbies filled with people and it gives a sense of community since you'll be playing against mostly the same people often.

Why meme him? SF5 is a far better pick for a beginner

SFV, T7, GGXrd are your only choices on steam. i also recommend skullgirls.
fightcade is free if you want to play old arcade games.

I'm torn between SFV and T7. I'm looking at the reviews, and T7 seems to have better reviews. Is SFV still active? There's a lot of controversy surrounding SFV too.

i don't think the issues in SFV will be too much of an issue to a beginner, but i've personally never played it. tekken 7 is good but very punishing for beginners and requires you to spend a lot of time in the lab to learn each matchup. both are good in different ways.

ps if you care about single player content then tekken7 is extremely lacking, and has no tutorial mode.
