PC gaming is so fragile right now. Microsoft or Steam has the entire platform by the balls and either of them could fuck PC gaming up forever. Don't give me any crap about Linux because that will never be mainstream. Ironically it was also this same fragile situation that allowed PC gaming to be as big as it is. I bet PC gaming would never had been as popular if instead of one OS and one DD service there were dozens with exclusive games on each of them.

I genuinely haven't noticed any stuttering? Is there any more to this or did Microsoft just vaguely say something? I record most of my gameplay and I haven't noticed any lag in frame rate or anything.

You better hope that it will be, or this is the future you chose.

Of course an argument can be made that Android/Linux is now on over 51% of computing devices, with GNU/Linux bringing that up to nearly 55%.
Which would explain Microsoft wanting to tighten their grip to hold on to the users they have left.

>You better hope that it will be, or this is the future you chose.

I have nothing against Linux but the sad fact is only idiot-friendly platforms can be mainstream because the majority of every platform, even PC gaming, are idiots who don't know how to figure things out themselves. The majority of Steam uses do not even know how to download and use mods without the Steam Workshop.
>>
>>390013080
>PC gaming would never had been as popular if instead of one OS and one DD service there were dozens with exclusive games on each of them.
Actually this is how it started. Porting use to not be the nightmare it is on modern games.

A lot of games are adding second DRM anyway so if Steam took a dump another service, of which there are several, would just become the dominate one. Also if the translation layer for directX to OpenGL is ever polished up all modern games would become fairly universal (this is how DOTA2 works)

I don't think it likely that translation layer will ever get finished, but if it did that would change the market overnight. And also make SteamOS worth a damn.

>>390013332
Hold on to it. Also use Windows 8.1 + Classic Shell. All of the good of 7 plus better performance and more recent hardware. Hopefully by the time 8.1 support ends we'll have a decent stripped down version of 10 with the bullshit removed.

Valve ported everything to OpenGL since L4D2 port, later with Vulkan support when Source 2 was released.

> only idiot-friendly platforms can be mainstream

Here's the thing though, there's a lot of idiot friendly Linux distros. Most of which the majority of people don't know are Linux based, and they don't have to care about it.

How many people know that ChromeOS is Gentoo derived and that you can get a fully working GNU stack on it complete with Steam if you really want to?

Valve's SteamOS is actually a good idea for that very market, its just arrived really early before the market is really ready for it, but there's also no sign its going away.
>>
>>390013924
I didn't say Source games. The original way to make DOTA2 function was a translation layer. It unfortunately was specific to the game, but the source code is open.

Likely DOTA2 doesn't work that way now, I don't follow it, because I think moba games are boring shit. But yes Valve did start a project just for that, which would work in theory for any DirectX game.

Sadly not a lot of reason for anyone else to finish the job.

ToGL worked pretty well but was pretty limited in what it could do. For Valve's limited use case it did produce impressive results, but not as good as their native conversion over to Vulkan.

Feral's IndirectX is a lot more capable, with about 20% performance degradation with D3D11->OpenGL 4.x, and a much harder to pin down impact from D3D11->Vulkan just because there aren't as many games to compare benchmarks with yet though it appears much faster than GL.

The other translation layers that are out there like Gallium Nine (100%+ performance), VK9 (hypothetically as fast as Gallium Nine but still not mature), and the default Wine wrapper (50% performance at best) are all still fairly limited either in supported D3D features, or performance.

>Over 3600 games actually at the current count.
Wow, that's a whole lot compared to the hundreds of thousands of games available for Windows.
>>
>>390014560
Because of the failure of their own efforts to create an efficient development environment on top of their aging VMS clone, and to keep up with modern UNIX based operating systems, Microsoft essentially created their own compatibility layers within Windows on top of their new UWP format.
This is actually also how the UWP based Windows 10 is still able to run exe files.

Its very similar to how Wine works on Linux, except that Microsoft has intentionally crippled their Linux subsystem to prevent it from being used for modern Linux games, while Wine is increasingly capable of playing recent Windows games.
>>
>>390014407
Yea that was my point. Only knew of ToGL to be open source. But if anyone of those takes a good leap forward that could be a game changer.

In particular its the middle games that are the issue too. Old games predate DirectX and often have a way to work on other systems. Many new games get Vulkan or OpenGL editions at least some do. Its that gen6-7 era and some current companies that tie us to Windows.

I do 3D design so I'm stuck on Windows either way sadly. Blender eats dick so no Linux for my main station. Its a dream for one of those to work out, but it is possible. For years we thought Saturn emulation or PS3 emulation as going nowhere and that has started to change. If W10 dicks us over hard enough some kind nerd may make that difference the same way PS3 got hacked the minute it pissed off the wrong crowd removing OtherOS.

>There are people who willingly handicap themselves with decrepit computers because they'll believe anything people tell them too and they're legitimately afraid of upgrading to Windows 10 because Microsoft will watch them masturbate and sell the recording to high class secret society auctions

Just upgrade already so you can play games with DX12 & use the same CPU's & GPU's the modern world is using.
>>
>>390014763
Like I said, that's just Steam.
Steam for Windows lists only 16306 games.

How many of those 'hundreds of thousands' of games available for Windows run through legacy compatibility layers or emulators? Almost all of those are available for Linux as well.
Plus when you include Windows ability to run legacy software from other platforms as being Windows games, why can't Linux count Windows as just one more legacy platform?

Vulkan is the Standard modern graphics API and developers should support it to run on the majority of systems Android/Linux, GNU/Linux, and GNU/NT (still popularly but improperly referred to as Windows).

Plus you dont need it when you have the real thing.
>>
>>390015337
I'm not going to bother giving names because you'll have any excuse you can think of for not wanting DX12. You should want it because it's futureproofing your system for future games when they inevitably stop supporting older versions of DirectX.
>>
>>390015615
Right that just leads to where I'm going with this.

Just like old DOS games on Windows now largely run through DOSbox which was originally developed to run those games on Linux, Windows now uses a legacy compatibility layer for old exe software and its likely that layer will rapidly fall behind Wine the minute Microsoft stops caring about it, which they already have for some older software.

The future is that 'Windows' games will be running through Wine even on Windows.
>>
>>390015714
Oh developers will drop old DirectX to be sure.

But hopefully they'll move to cross-platform standards like SDL+Vulkan which will enable games to work on Windows 7, Android/Linux, GNU/Linux, and GNU/NT with minimal issues, and not DirectX 12 which will lock them to a single version of a single operating system.
>>
>>390015714
>DirectX9 still dirt common
Yea I'm not worried about DX11 going anywhere anytime soon.

I wouldn't mind the new feature set sure, but its not worth the performance loss on so many of my other games to use the only OS DX12 works on. And other API typically catch up surpass not long after. Hell the few games I've been able to use Vulkan with were batshit crazy good for it.
