The joyful really does help you understand things better, I personally don't like what they did to Buddy's character, but it does a great job explaining the lore and world of Olathe much better than the painful.
I'd also recommend playing Lisa: the first, you can download that one online for free, but it plays more like Yume Nikki than the painful and joyful.

You get some tiny bits of extra info regarding the past, and some closure regarding what happens to Buddy. By the way I'd recommend watching Pain Mode's extra ending if you haven't already before going into Joyful. The topic in it is brought up in Joyful but I'm pretty sure you're supposed to know about it prior to playing the DLC

Nobody really knows if Yume Nikki was experimental or not because the developer kinda just vanished after the 0.10 release. But yeah, there's no narrative, so people like to play it and discuss how they interpret it.

It's a tragedy about the cycle of abuse in a world that's damned. Nothing anyone does can break the chain without leaving scars behind, and the same goes for the status quo of the world. Brad or Rando, neither would have been able to stop Yado's rampage. Even then, half the list members were as good as dead. To me it's always been a desperate story of futility.

Brad took care of Buddy her first couple years after he stopped using Joy, but soon after he was getting depressed and started using Joy because he started seeing visions of Lisa and his father Marty.

Buddy took off because Brad was becoming nearly abusive towards her. In which Brad kind of snapped out of it when she was kidnapped and one of his buddies was murdered.


That's all in within the first 10 minutes of the game

People CAN play Lisa the first but it really doesn't help with understanding it since Painful pretty much shoves it in you face that Brad was a piece of shit that ran off and left Lisa to be abused by Marty so he became a druggy.

Do I recommend Lisa the first to understand the other games? No, not at all

Do I recommend giving it a go? Sure.
