I haven't played the third one (yet?) because I thought it looked shit, but I really enjoyed Mafia 2, more than I thought I would. Solid 6/10 game that had the potential to be much better. I was expecting more from Mafia 3 but nothing I've seen of it made me want to play it.

No, Michael is the protag. The story isn't even really about Frankling, but about Trevor and Michael. Also /v/ has a choice of playing with Michael and Trevor. Some people are also more open to things like this if the series has had it before.
Mafia 1 and 2 had Vito as the protag, so they flipped out because a "nigger" is now the protag.

In what? Mafia 3? You clearly haven't played it. Even Lincoln himself is NOT portrayed as a hero. Repeatedly. This is repeated all throughout the game, from start to finish. The "good" ending is him being on the run for the rest of his life for the crimes he committed. The "good" end puts Vito in charge of the city.

1 and 2 are pure 100% vidya kino, It's not the most interesting gameplay wise but it makes up with just about everything else.

Mafia 3 is alright on its own, its story and characters are surprisingly solid but the gameplay gets repetitive real fast. I appreciate that it didn't take its time to spit on the originals but rather built off them unlike most reboots today.

I could beat that parking garage level with 100% headshot accuracy without taking any damage because the enemies would spawn on cue. And Mafia 2 had infinite respawn to try and compensate
