It's unnecessary since the event flags are simply day/night and NPC schedules aren't relevant for quests outside of that binary distinction either. If I recall correctly, the only quest where it would be useful being able to switch to a different time than the ones available is the one where you need the Blood Moon to open a shrine. That other one in Kakariko where you have to investigate the orb's disappearence triggers at either 9PM or slightly later.

It would be easier to finish quests if you'd be able to wait for NPCs to get home instead of having to go out and look for them when waiting at a fire doesn't stop at any useful times. They're usually sleeping or have warped to their job.

It gets dark early at night and bright early in the morning. I just pretend it works on hyrule time, also I turn the hud off so I never see it.
