Thankfully. Most of the best games released after 2010 are indie titles. I recommend you try Furi, Little Nightmares, Hollow Knight, The Talos Principle, The Witness. And then some AAA titles like Titanfall 2, Hitman, Tekken 7, etc. I got more recommendations of varying genres of you need any more.

I can only speak about RPGs then, since I'm more into platformer games.

Witcher 3 is the tits. Seriously, game of the decade. The first few Assassin's creed games are good but the storyline starts getting pretty bullshit.

Mass effect 2 is great. I don't think mass effect 3 was good

Portal 2 was awesome but short. But it's playable on older hardware anyway.

Witcher 2 is also fucking awesome.

They're good games. I was going for ones that would not be playable unless you had a modern system. The favourite games I've been playing recently are things like hollow knight, sonic mania and ori, but OP said they didn't like platformers.

I thought the combat was great. Not sure how the gameplay was any more boring than a normal RPG. I actually thought it did pretty well.

Try metroidvania on steam, also the talos principle and soma if you like that genre.

Dragon's dogma and dark souls 2-3 is also good
Doom,nier automata,wolfenstein:tno is your pc is powerfyl enough.
Try to emulate game for ps2 and gamecube if is your thing.

Bayonetta and vanquish if you like japanes hack and slash games also DMC4 and DmC:definitive edition.
oh and serious sam HD also.

Start with this, i don't really into rts, but there's a lot of new one.
