Whether you can properly pull it off is down to luck really, most people gotta actually let their facial hair grow and groom it a bit in order to look good.
I can and even get compliments on it which is nice, but once I get the opportunity to properly grow a beard I'm doing it though. What you're looking at is more of a baby step for people who are old enough to grow hair but for whatever reason (school/work dress codes, whatever) don't get the chance to properly let it grow out.
