Fucking gamestop.
>>
>>389900935
The employees will literally be fired if they don't sell enough games/ get enough preorders.
>>
I went into a Gamestop for the first time in years a few days ago because I had 10 minutes to kill.

Video games were like maybe 1/5th of the store was video games and the rest of it was selling garbage like Minecraft toys, shirts, nerd desk collectables, phones and other things.

I was kinda tempted to buy the Dragonball teapot.
>>
>>389901029
And that's exactly why they should shut their fucking mouths. The more they talk, the more I want to walk out of the store and just buy it on Amazon instead.
>>
>>389900935
>not ordering a game on the website and just going into the store to pick it up.
>>
>>389901029
Ok but I got so fed up with pressure tactics from vendors I just buy stuff online anyway. Much more comfy.

Maybe those stores will get the Blockbuster treatment.
>>
Meh. Retail is just a shit show. If you are friendly people will complain you are pushy. If you lay back people will complain you aren't helping. Every day I got lectured because of some faglord complaining to my boss.
>>
>>389901161
Yeah, the sheer amount of those dumb giant headed chibi figurines and shit that clutter GameStop now is really something to behold. It's like half the store is Hot Topic now.
>>
>>389901181
>not just getting it delivered in the mail

why
>>
>>389900935
>leaving your computer chair to acquire video games
do people really do this?
>>
>>389901273
If I want advice I just ask. I wish more people had common sense.
>>
>>389901315
I wouldn't be surprised if it was called Nerdstop soon. Games are so low on their merchandise list.
>>
>>389901315
Well. Half the store is Hot Topic now.

Because they bought ThinkGeek from Hot Topic.
>>
>>389901440
It's no surprise. Every game that comes out now can be purchased and played with a few button presses. Even if you want physical copies, you can get them online with a few clicks, usually cheaper than you can get them at brick and mortar stores.

There's literally no plus for the consumer to walk into a physical store and purchase a video game anymore. The best deal and best convenience is the internet. I will be thoroughly impressed if Gamestop still exists five years from now, unless like you said, they completely rebrand themselves with a completely different business model. But even then most nerds still buy all their shit online.

>Dazed for a few moments
>Next thing I know I'm bent over being strapped down to the counter

>All the other customers are ignoring all of this minding their own business
>When they're finally finished I pre-order Destiny 2 Deluxe Edition and limp out
>Currently playing Destiny 2 right now

Fucking GameStop...

i went there to buy a 3DS, thinking it would be the best place to browse and would have a greater selection of games. it was a truly painful experience.

>tries to sell me the stupid $15 membership

>decline because im not poor and he goes on a rant about how it isnt a big deal to buy a used game
>"Ok man, I'd like to just pay thanks"
>Tells me he's giving me a card on the membership program so I can look it over

to top it all off, the selection of games was literally worse than Walmart. Walmart even has more used games. There was no reason to go to that store, and I never will again.
>>
>>389901029
There needs to be a law where businesses can't force employees to do this shit.

I have a few friends of friends who used to work at one of the nearest ones to me, and yeah, it's pretty miserable from my understanding. Most people in there look pretty soulless because they probably went into it with "dude I love video games, what could be better than working here?!" and then the reaity check comes into play. It doesn't help that any sort of manager or higher up in any given store is a massive faggot.

>>

because if they don't spew that garbage their DM fires them immediately. Happened to me. A regular who came in every week to buy something, and always had preorders down asked me to not bother with the schpiel cause it annoyed him and I got that. So I didn't.
DM was there one day, he noted I didn't "properly greet certain customers" then I got fired a week later even though I had some of the best numbers in the store. They literally don't care about the consumer. They care about having their advertising pay out.

Years from now, after Gamestop has finally gone under, there will be tons of Gamestop nostalgia threads on /v/ from newfags praising how great Gamestop was and how much of a tragedy it is that they don't exist anymore just like they do with Blockbuster.

>Dude tries to push the rewards card stuff a bit too much and won't back down when I say no.
>Try to sell me a used game as new without consulting me or saying "Its new, just not shrinkwraped".
>Dude acts like I just murdered his family if I do not get the rewards card.
>Get details wrong on my preorder or completely fuck up how they put my preorder in and lose it (I had that happen twice).
>Try to play the "we don't have X in stock because you didn't preorder" game despite literally having a billion copies right behind them and no one picking them up.

When GCU with Best Buy became a thing, I pretty much had no reasons to go there anymore. It kind of amazes me how bad Gamestop's customer service has gotten, even the rundown nearly abandoned K-Mart in town doesn't give me as much bullshit the rare times I go there and get something.

No reason. It's an at-will workplace. meaning at-will you can quit, and at-will they can fire. No 2weeks, no reasoning needed. The actual reason was they pumped it full of hot girls since the store was performing exceptionally well (We actually cleaned our store.)

>it's a job, and if they don't pester you with questions they'll be fired. you think they want to actually talk to your 400lbs weeb ass?
Corporate needs to be held responsible for this, not the employees. The government needs to make it illegal for stores to pester customers, unless they ask.

>>
>>389911061
They want people to buy used because they're considered a pawn shop, at least in my state/county/whatever. So they get all that profit. Either buy new or don't buy at all, unless they have a deal that's literally too good to pass up.
>>
>>389923124
Forcing shitty stuff like people signing up for credit cards shouldn't be part of someone's job unless they work for a credit card company.
>>
>>389903323
If they were like.. hey you earb a comission of 0.1% of everything you sell.. employees would be happy af and work harder.
>>
>>389917479

>>
>>389923124
>There needs to be a law where businesses can't force their employees to perform their job.
No.However, their job should not include pestering customers or things that make employees uncomfortable.
>There needs to be a law that tells businesses they can't fire an employee for lack of performance
Kind of, yes. For example, sales targets should be completely anonymous and illegal to be used to fire someone. If someone is struggling, its up to the company to help out that worker.
>>
>>389923496
They are a credit card company in the extent that they literally have a credit card they are trying to sell.

What kind of retarded dumbass semantic loops did you hop through to try and make that your justification?
>>
>>389923531
But that would lose them a tiny proportion of profits, and why bother motivating your employees when you can just fire them since they're all interchangeable and super replaceable drones anyhow?
>>
>>389923646
Because when someone applies to gamestop, they are signing up to sell games, not push credit cards. Plus, they can't control how many people will sign up, even if they do the pitch perfectly to each and every customer. The rates at which people sign up for the cards don't have anything to do with whether or not a gamestop employee is doing his job.
>>
Can someone even list a single retail store that doesn't try to shove shitty credit cards, or "rewards club" cards on you in this day and age?

I go to Gamestop, they try to push preorders and warrenties on me.

I go to Target, they try to push their Red Card on me.

I go to the book store, and they try to push their card on me.

I go to the gas station, they try to push their fuel rewards card on me.

I'm more tired of getting fucking pestered by every store trying to push 82 credit cards on me than any one store in particular, since they all do this shit now.
>>
>>389923802
These peoples jobs are being salesmen.
It's almost as if that's exactly the job they are signing up for and being asked to perform.

If they can't sell, then the company can't afford to have them staffed.
How complicated is this?

And if someone is helping customers and running the registers and pitching their cards or whatever corporate said to, and the customers just aren't signing up for the card because they went to gamestop to buy games, not sign up for a credit card, why is that the employees fault? I agree someone who isn't doing their job should be fired, but if the employee makes the credit card pitch and gets turned down, they are still doing their job. They can't force people to sign up for cards.
>>

>>
>>389923872
Nope. People buy credit cards. People love the idea of buying now and not paying now. Because they're stupid. And stores want to capitalize on stupidity.
>>
>>389901162
I did. I work at a Gamestop and tried that. Know what happened? Customer complained that she felt like she was being ignored on our survey.

I try to be there to help customers without being a pushy salesman.

CUSTOMERS COMPLAIN EITHER WAY, JUST LIKE YOU ASSHOLES.
>>
I did really want to work there when I was in Highschool. Made some pretty cool friends since I went there about once a week. Moved back into town a couple years ago and the old crew has moved on. I've ran into some of them since then, they miss those times too, but they couldn't stand that shit anymore. Went from pushing preorders to pushing credit cards and shit. No reason to go back since it's entirely new people and filled with Funko shit. Also, I don't see the point in paying 60 bucks for new games when I've got Amazon and Best Buy charging me $48.
>>
>>389923531
But they don't need to motivate them. The state of the job market does the motivation for them. Meaning, there are tons and tons of uneducated retards wishing right at this moment to take that shitty retail job from that Gamestop employee right this moment, even for less pay.
Therefore, Gamestop is not motivated to treat their workforce with care, they can just replace them easier than you think if they don't perform as they expect.
They would only need to think about shit like this if they had trouble replacing them.
>>
>>389924169
If everyone just bought everything they wanted to without ever having to be enticed by a salesman, salesmen wouldn't exist in general.

The whole point that they are hired is to entice people to buy shit they normally thought they wouldn't. Whether its to preorder some dumbshit game or sign up for a credit card.
Fuck dude, might as well just remove all suggestive advertising, we don't want to try and force people to pay money for things they aren't interested in, and we certainly shouldn't expect certain ads to be more successful than others at enticing people to purchase product.
>>
>>389901161
Gamestop and Thinkgeek have the same owners. the video game stores are on down turn while peddling geeky themed merch is on the rise. expect to see more of the same.
>>
>>389924525
Your problem is not knowing the customer
The store i go to i have no problem with because they know how to behave/act in front of each customer. They start a simple small talk and let the customer start conversations more , and they actually like video games unlike some other video game sellers. So they actually enjoy being able to talk to customers who share their interests but know not to spill spaghetti when talking to say a mum who obviously is only there to buy a game for their child
>>
>>389924525
It's almost as if each person is different to how they want to be handled.
Like they have different personalities or something.
>>
>>389924658
I suppose I fucked up by not stating I'm not the guy that wants it to be illegal to make your employees push stuff, that's fine in my book and your entire post is correct. I just don't think people should be fired based on their pre-order rates or credit card sign-up rates or whatever, as long as they are actually doing their sales pitch properly. Like, if they aren't doing the pitch at all or it's obvious they aren't trying, that's one thing, fire them. But someone is doing their pitch and just isn't getting the sales, that's out of their control and they shouldn't be fired for that. I guess I just don't like the idea of being in one of these jobs and losing that job over something I have no control over.

>>
>>389900935
I know it's been stated several times already, but the employee doesn't have a choice. Same thing with pushing pre-orders and the membership shit.

No employee, besides maybe the managers, really give a shit or want to bug you about it. But if they don't and the manage finds out, or some secret shopper BS is going down, you're fucked. I worked there years back and would get bitched at for not pushing pre-ordering new games, membership, etc. for the mom buying their kid a $5 old PS2 game. It's obvious they don't want it, they just want the game quickly and to move on. But nope, if you just do that, corporate gets all pissy.

It's shit, but honestly not the employees faults. Think about it, they probably want to deal with you about as much as you want to deal with them.
>>

>>389927943
I think the idea of secret shoppers is fine. Make sure employees are doing a good job, being courteous, things like that. The problem comes with every corporation needing to push more trash on customers. Every store needs a credit card or membership, pre-orders, warranties, whatever else. If the customer's showing interest in it, or is obviously making a purchase that leads you to believe they might benefit, then it's perfect to mention. Forcing people to listen to an annoying speech about it when they clearly don't want you to waste their time is the problem. But like I said before, it's pretty much do it or get fired. Disappointing because it really seems like it does more harm than good, but is still the normal practice.
>>
